Medhurst

could not stand him. would rather argue with umps than play, was selfish and inconsistent, getting rid of him and a pick for taz was just about the best trade the dockers have done. arrogant and soft, would rather take a snap from an impossible angle than pass. glad to see the back of him. in one word hopless!

I didnt mind him.
He would have been good for us this year with Jeff missing 1/2 the year so far.
I never liked the staging for free kicks part of his game.
Has a pretty good leap.

I guess he may be getting a game at the moment. That has more to do with Farmer than Medhurst though. Polak may have to given our backline injuries. Keeping them, especially Polak, would have sent the wrong messages in my opinion; "Cruise, and you're fine." It's a culture thing that the coaches are trying to sort out here.

But in the trade week we got two players who look like being best 22 for the year, and we also have three players from the draft who we are more than happy with. Collard looks super exciting, and would prefer to have him selected for the same role that Medhurst played. Plus, unlike Medhurst, I don't think he will be trapped in the one position.

With Polak, unless he can fulfil the role of CHB and consistently beat his opponent 1 on 1, then we have better players in Johnson, Mundy, MacPharlin and Grover. Even Dodd. And if Haddril and The Rash ever get onto the playing list we would look silly in terms of backline talls.

Is very selfish at times (like when he gets penalised ofr spitting the dummy over the umps), but overall he is a talented forward who has served us very well over his five years here. Kicked 50 goals in 2003, and has had quite a few really good games outside of that. He has had a cult following at Freo which is one of the reasons why it was sad to see him go.

Considering that his form last year was not worthy of making the side in our last 12 games (when we won the nine in a row and played in the three finals) and he completely dropped off last year, the trade was a sensible decision. He had plenty of opportunities and didn't take them.

Selfish...then when he tried to do the team thing...ended up coughing up the footy with poor skills or decision making. Couldn't stand his constant argueing with the umpires. Blazed away at goals frpom 1 step over 50metres (constantly), with better targets inside 50m arc.

No - good riddance

footy eater is just a little stroppy that Paul "THE SKUNK" Medhurst is no longer running around at freo - why pass when you can take the initiative and snap a team lifting goal - carn medhurst!!!

Massive talent who never needed to fight for his place during his development years due to our player depth. Consequently he never had the real hunger that some less gifted players show.
I think the Club was caught in a position of having to play him while fully aware it probably wasn't the best way for him to develop.
While some Pies fans call him steak knives he seems to getting a lot of games. Looks like groundhog day for him.

Personally, I was disappointed to lose him. He may have been called monkey or goal hungry dwarf or any other amount of nick names but he started at Freo and I would of liked to see him stay with us.

I reckon with Jeff out he'd look pretty good around Tarrant and Pav.

Always liked him when he was here, though he could be a little frustrating at times. Like others I used to get annoyed at his occasional lapses in concentration to argue with the ump.

Given the Farmer situation he'd obviously be handy to have in the squad right now, but he and Farmer never really clicked playing together. Given the choice I'd take Farmer anyday, even given the relative ages of the two.

All in all I'm happy we traded him. He's the sort of player who's always going to perform better when he's one of the primary targets and that was never going to happen in our forward line. He seemed to struggle to adapt his game from a leading forward to crumbing off our big blokes where we needed him.

Very happy with Taz's workrate so far, though his kicking for goal has shown signs of being as erratic as expected. Wish Medders all the best and hopefully the trade will end up being a winner for both clubs.

No

I wish him all the best and hope it works out for him at Collingwood as I am a fan and when he's on fire he's thrilling to watch, however we traded Medders at a point when he couldnt even get in break into our team and got a player who is first team standard in Tarrant.

What a f**kwit, was the most selfish and idiotic player we had behind the wiz (Obviously) but what shitted me the most was that he had the heart of a green prawn and didn't seem interested in playing footy at freo(went off to Bali to celebrate his "trade", offloading methinks. Obviously he'll go out and try to show the world he's a worthy player (good luck to him genuinely) but besides that i honestly think it was one of the better trades the club has made(special mention to the Koops for Mundy deal), simply wasn't in the best 22 in my opinion and the club's as well.

P.S Rumors of his alleged liasons with certain Weagles certainly didn't go down well with me (taking account that this is a 2 team town).

I still struggle to understand why Collingwood wanted him. Short term he clearly has a role there, but they have better small forwards, or at least more consistent small forwards than Medhurst.

The other major issue with him in terms of our team structure is that he is a poor to ordinary "crumber", and is at his best as a go to forward. That didn't last year, and I can't see it lasting anywhere else.

A few points here:

Status in the game? Medhurst is a very good player who can break open a match of his own boot. He is also a confidence player though - so he tends to continue a roll of good form, or a roll of bad form. This is something he needs to work on. He also has played as a FF-style leading forward most of his life, so he is not adept at crumbing or tackling. If you are going to play him (or you are going to critize him for selfishness) you need to keep that in mind.

Should Freo have traded him? Even though Farmer and Medhurst are slighly different types of players, only of Farmer and Medhurst could fit into that forward line. Medhurst's confidence was down when he left, and Farmer's form was all over him.

If the trade had been for a midfielder, I would have said definitely. But it was part of a trade for Tarrant. I think overall (excluding an analysis of the picks) Tarrant for Medhurst gives us a slightly more in terms of the playing list.

No one knew that Farmer was going to self explode like he has; hindesight is a wonderful thing...

Are you sad to see him go?
Yes. I hope he has a long and distinguished career for Collingwood.

1. He was already in Bali when he learnt of the trade. He didn't want to go and had to be convinced. I can say this with absolute certainty.

2. Leigh Brown for Schammer was pretty good too. ;)

I've got my Wall to Wall Freo dvd and the Medders section is pure magic.

Given that I'm ok that he is gone. Won't be a big loss. If the Tarrant trade was just Medders and pick 10 then that would have been fair. Tarrant has been good and will get a lot better for us.

It was us losing Polak to Richmond which was the killer IMO. We should have got more than upgrading pick 10 to pick 8 (which Collingwood got anyway).

It was pick 13 and Polak for pick 8, and they also gave us pick 42. We then used that to get Solomon - we gave Essendon our picks 42 and 47 and they gave us Solomon and pick 52.

Unfortunately Richmond used the PSD to good effect. Not a lot we could do faced with losing Polak for nothing.

I can't see this at all. Playing Medhurst would not assist Pavlich at all, and we would have him swamped with opposition players as our primary avenue to goal. I expect Tarrant to let us down at times as he has shown in his past that he can go missing, and is a confidence kicker on goal. But that is exactly the same statement that Medhurst has sitting against his name. Regardless, Tarrant in our forward line will have a positive effect on the team because of how the opposition mans up our forwards, whereas Medhurst would not change a thing in that regard.

In addition Tarrant has shown that he has a major role in assisting others scoring, and that he is an effective tackler. These are all impacting positively on our forward line even though Tarrant is still recovering from pre-season surgery. Assuming a full list to choose from Medhurst would still be a fringe player.

I knew you guys would be suprised with Tarrant's workrate on the field. Very underrated in this area of the game, I think it is his primary asset. Probably one of the top 3 or so hardest working tall forwards in the game.

Medhurst though has surprised me with his on-field defensive pressure. He is a very strong tackle, and rarely seems to miss a tackle. Perhaps it is more an attitude thing and he knows he has to do more. I can see why he doesn't handball, he is a shocking use of the ball by hand. He hasn't played that much to be honest, he's been injured a bit but I haven't seen him be too selfish yet and take an assy snap shot at goal, in fact I don't think I've seen him take one snap shot. He is pretty good at kicking long to our tall forwards advantage. MM is a bit prudent when it comes to flashy players and may have tried to drill those things out of him like shots from outside 50 and such.

People thought we got him to cover for Didak, but as it turns out he seems to be filling the role Rusling would of played as the leading forward pocket/full forward.
