did you know only australians call it the mexican wave?
A bit like Aussies calling American Football "gridiron" - the gridiron is the field, so it would be like calling cricket "pitch" or Aussie Rules football "oval".
What was wrong with it?
At least 20 year old technology - have a look at some of the scoreboards at NFL stadiums - tech is lightyears ahead.

We ain't the only ones to call it the Mexican Wave. It's the standard term used outside North America -

"... Most sports historians agree that the wave began internationally during the 1986 FIFA World Cup in Mexico. It was broadcast to a global audience, and the wave was popularized worldwide after the tournament. This was the first time that most people living outside North America had seen the phenomenon. As a result, English speakers outside of North America call the phenomenon a "Mexican wave" Likewise in many languages like Polish, Serbian and Turkish, direct translation of the phrase Mexican Wave is used ..."
