Portfolio Melbourne Football League: Future Football… Now

With the AFL seemingly bringing back a Reserves competition, where does that leave historical clubs? The Melbourne Football League was formed to promote second tier football, joining the Original 8 will be the Modern 8. Some teams you may be familiar with or have seen before. New teams are an exciting addition to the established clubs and some groups are keen on reviving long lost but not forgotten clubs. This is Future Football… Now.

With the new league consisting of 16 clubs, it’s great to see a mix of the old and new, some familiar some not. Maybe a new team to barrack for? Here are the first 8.

The completion of the league is now done. All teams will have a Home jumper, Away Jumper, Club logo wrapped by the scarf in official colours and a Lettermark that makes the club easily identifiable on headwear, teamwear and other merchandise.

A seems like as a good a place to start. Welcome Altona. This western suburbs club is all about community. Founded in 1918, the Vikings will continue to play and train at JK Grant Reserve. Altona have won 19 premierships which is a testament to the hard work of the whole club. With a new competition to play in the Vikings will don a brand new Home kit. Looking the professional outfit they have their traditional Purple guernsey adorned with the Victorian V in Gold. The fans are already selling out the merch tent with the new gear.

The White Horse club was founded in 1936 and will continue to play and train at Box Hill City Oval. The Mustangs will once again wear their famous Gold and Brown Tripanel guernsey. Box Hill have won 3 premierships in recent years and are back on track for a bright future.

Founded in 1891, and joining the Association in 1925, the City Oval tenants have won 6 premierships in their history. Tradition continues by wearing the Navy guernsey with Red Sash at home while away debuting their new crest over a swirl of C in club colours. For the first time in years The Battle of Bell Street will be played twice. They’re the Kings of Coburg, you know.

Fitzroy are back in the MFL after accepting an invitation to join the league. The Royboys get to wear their much loved kit again every second Saturday at Brunswick St.

Frankston will be wearing a new kit this season. Now with a Double V with the Dolphin motif centred. The Dolphs will be bringing their kinetic energy to Frankston Oval this year, so Fins Up fans.After a season in the new kit, Frankston decided to return to their traditional jumper with a new design on the away with the club monogram adorning the jumper.

The Gryphons will represent the inner south east of Melbourne. Playing and training at Warrawee Park the Gryphons want to soar to great heights. Wearing a Navy guernsey with a Purple Sash, it’s a nod to the Oakleigh teams of old.

Melbourne Athletic want to run with the big football clubs in town. With a pedigree in track and field, the Orioles are ready to turn their heels to the middle of the oval to shake up the competition. Playing and training at Casey Fields, the A’s wear a Charcoal guernsey with the club Lettermark in a centred Red Shield.

With 17 premierships in the trophy case, Port are the team with the success every team wants to emulate. Founded in 1874, The Borough are the mainstay of Melbourne football. Port are ready to launch into this new season with the goal kicking legacy and talent.

Playing at Preston City Oval and guided by the likes of Cazaly, the Bullants have won 6 premierships. Preston are bound to be up there like a swarm of busy Bullants this season. With the focus always on the Battle for Bell Street, Preston not only want to win derbies but be a force in the competition.

With the Big 3 Metropolitan racing clubs joining forces to form a football club, the Stallions are aiming to be a furlong in front of the opposition. Wearing a Green guernsey with a Purple Sash, Racing will look resplendent in the club’s colours. Training at Caulfield Infield, Racing have made a deal to play home games at Linton St Oval.

Ten premierships is a testament to Sandy’s dedication to hard work. Founded in 1928, the Zebras continue to play and train at Trevor Barker Beach Oval. In their famous Gold jumper with Black Stripes and Royal Cuffs, the Zebs are thundering toward the new season with vim and vigour.

With a massive war chest, the Melbourne Olympic Committee decided it was time to enter the professional sporting market. The MOC duly named the team the 56ers in honour of the Friendly Games of 1956. Playing and training at Toorak Park newly renovated facilities, Sporting are hoping to capture the Olympic spirit again by donning the colours of the Olympiad.

With the Tigers name already taken by Richmond, Werribee were in need of a new moniker. Bengals fitted perfectly, they’re the Tigers of old but with new stripes. Wearing their all new Orange guernsey with a prominent W to commence the new MFL season, Werribee are looking to go one better this year. With one premiership, the Bengals want to roar into the new season on a high. Chirnside Park will again be the Bees training and playing base for the forthcoming season.

Originally formed in 1874, West Melbourne were playing senior league football between 1878 and 1907. With the league now formed, this was a perfect opportunity to bring more West based teams in. The Millers will make their playing base at Whitten Oval.

Football at Point Gellibrand has been played there since 1864. The Seagulls have achieved success with 16 premierships and numerous standout players. Brilliant recruiting and strong leadership have built the Seagulls into a formidable outfit. Willy are always ready to Stand and Deliver against opponents every season. The distinctive Gold Sash on Royal guernsey gives the Town an aura of well deserved supremacy.

Team 16 to complete the league is a new club. Yarra Districts represent the North-Westthat desperately wants a club playing at the highest level possible. Yarra Districts will wear a Teal, Black and White Hooped guernsey at Home. Away the Titans will wear a White jumper with a Black/Teal Sash. With Yarra Districts playing and training out of Highgate at Craigieburn, locals can look forward to quality football making its debut in the North-West.

After a most successful first 3 years of the MFL, the commission met at MFL House and decided to add 2 more teams for the following season. Four groups put bids in to gain a place in the league; 2 Centrally located teams, a Western club and a North-East club all put plans forward for consideration.

Bid 1: Bundoora think they have what it takes to make the step up to senior level football. With 7 flags, the Longhorns are primed to steer the club to premiership success. Playing and training at Yulong Reserve, Bundoora supporters will get the chance to barrack for their boys when they get their opportunity to play against the established clubs.
