just wondering wen do u reckon we will see melbourne playing finals again? and intrested to see what melbourne should be doing to build to premiership team rather than a side who constantly makes finals?
If you look at how long it has taken other side to rebuild, it's usually between 3 to 5 years before they return to the finals. The thing that has worked in our favor is that many sides will have a gradual decline after being in finals consistantly. Falling to maybe 10th, then 12th or lower before they can capitlize on on top picks to rebuild. We did it instantly last year (injuries helped). Personally, i think we'll push finals in 2010 and premiership in 2013 (Naitanui gets the Norm Smith )
Hi all.
This is my first post here in a while, used to operate under a different name so im not a complete nube so don’t attack me for what im about to say.
The MelbourneFC is in some sort of trouble at the moment. On and off the field we are battling while not really showing any desperation to rectify this ongoing slide.
While this is a negative start, this is not a Melbourne bashing post so don’t merge it with the others. This is an attempt to sort out what our problems are at the club and think of some real solutions, even if the reality is that we have little sway over the powers that be.
First the on field problems:
The side we have is not going to be competitive for at least 3 years. We are at the moment stuck in a position where we have a mixture of players with too little experience, players who should probably have retired, and players who shouldn’t be getting a game week to week.
With our side facing such dire problems (and lets call them dire…id say the lack of any real spine or forward line is dire) it is the perfect opportunity to rebuild our club.
Having missed the opportunity to trade Bruce, Green and Robbo like I asked for in a post last year ( I don’t think iv seen a more half arsed attempt to rebuild than soley trading our best talent in TJ last year), and as they are likely not going to fetch the value we had hoped if traded this year, they are of little use as a trade. As such these players should form the older brigade around our new young players. As it is, our side is not winning, so why not lose games by giving our young players a game. Yze, Holland, Wheatley, Jamar, Neitz and probably Whelan should be asked to move on, as im sure many of the will be, and we should play a young team. Experiment, give them game time. Yes we will still lose but we will all know where the club is heading. At the moment I fail to see what dean bailey hopes to achieve playing the likes of jamar when we have younger players who could be developed.
A line needs to be drawn through the list and all players over about 24 scrapped bar maybe bruce, green, mcdonald and white who should keep their place on the list.
Beyond this year, we should draft tall. There is a lot of talk for drafting the best possible player at any point but tbh, beyond picks 1-10, the order is a bit of a raffle as to which players will come through and which wont. Take the best tall player at each point and hope they are the goods.
Finally, we ideally need a marquee player but tbh the need is probably a few years away yet but I cannot remember the last Melbourne player to be a household name with the Hirds/buckleys etc. Garry Lyon??
Off Field:
Here is where some of our biggest problems lie as the afl informed the club a few weeks ago. Most recently have been a few of our major faults.
branding: why have we moved away from the demons? We appear to be clinging to some archaic image of ourselves and the traditional club...an image that hasnt helped us for the past 20 years with memberships...why would it now, we have the lowest auskick #s of any team, this we need to change by making ouselves marketable to a younger demographic. Thats where the future is. Move towards to demon image and away from boring. I mean seriously, go to the afl site and look at the team logos across the top and pick the least inspiring..we'd have to be up there. coach: While im not going to say that bailey is a bad coach (doesnt really have the cattle), Sheedy may have been the right option given our current position. For years we've been putting money before wins and now that wins are beyond us for a few years we draft a coach for skill. Why did the board have to take a stand on performance now! China…wtf where they thinking. How do we possibly think our growth is going to come from china when we dont play there? Are they gonna help us fill the MCG against freo on the week end? Focus on issues closer to home and wait till we get some members on our home turf before we look to china or anywhere for that matter. board: Sorry to say, i dont mind Gardner but hes not taking the club in the direction it needs to go. The only real option to revive the club at the moment is Garry Lyon from my pov. He has vast sway with the media, various potential marketing and business ties, he is very marketable and would provide a face for our club, he has several of his own shows from which to sell the club as have eddie mcguire and JB before him. Finally, he is a past hero of our club, possibly the last genuine star or marquee player we have had. Jim stynes has been touted but im not sure he's outspoken enough. A great melbourne man but we need a strong advocate. An Eddie, a JB, a kennet...someone that people will take notice of.
Only problem is that im not certain Garry wants the job and even if he would consider it, im not sure our club is inspired enough to chase him for it.
Iv always been the first to bag north melbourne for that bullstish shinboner spirit they rattle on about but perhaps its time our club showed a bit of their desparation in fixing our own problems rather than sitting back with a 'shel be right' attitude.
I would have given this its own thread but iv only been signed up a few hours.
And everyone feel free to put their views forward on the future of our club, conflicting or otherwise.
