Too right, he was among my best players for Metro. Butcher kicked 3 goals - but only had three shots at goal. If someone told you pregame that Butcher would only have three shots at goal you'd have laughed at them. We all looked at Metro on paper, saw they didnt select Hartigan and wondered how they planned to contain Butcher.

To give away 9cm, he more than held his own Josh Purcell it was a very good performance against a guy who is highly rated.

Kicked 2 goals played FF, CHF, FB and Ruck, I wasn't there this is a just a report from the game.

No disrespect to Purcell but having Butcher double and triple teamed after 1/4 time certainly helped his cause. Keath went out of the game so Butcher became the main target after that. VM knew it and Toy always got back to help out.

That hit Toy took doing just that was one big mother of a collision. The tough nut still got up.

Scully is a ripper but Toy isn't far behind.

Great game today. Many good matchups. Congrats on the VC and Robert Hyde for finally getting 1 over on VM. Now to go all the way and take the title.

True, and Butcher did kick the two goals in the first quarter. Still Purcell fought out of his weight division and regardless of whether he had a bit of help or not it was a good effort and Metro worked their defence well to not only restrict Butcher's impact but also as you say Keath went out of it after kicking his two goals in the opening quarter and Rohan was held goalless as well. If anything the resting forward whether it was Cunnington or Martin posed the biggest problem.

Very good game of footy, fast and furious. Didnt know where to look at times there was so much happening.

Butcher is my opinion was average yesterday (except for one great mark and a good goal on the run) and how he got in VC's best players is beyond me. Yeah, he kicked 3 goals, but Fitzpatrick, Carlisle & a few others kicked 2 for VM, but had no other impact on the game. Therefore, what I'm trying to say is the VM defenders must of done a good job on him.

I guess he didn't do his chances any harm though, as by now most recruiters know who and what they want.

Anyways they are just my thoughts

Cowan really struggled to get into the game. Few touches in the 4th but otherwise very little impact.

I thought it was a pretty fair game from Dylan. Took a couple of nice 1 grab marks and his huge leap went alright against Vardy and co.

I think Whoosha would have been happy with his efforts. He's pretty raw but his last two games have been solid. He's a work in progress no doubt.

I watched Malksham closely today after comments I had made in previous posts. Apart from what may be the mark of the championships he was very quiet. There were many better than Melksham, including Fitzpatrick who kicked a couple of goals, marked and contested well and was good at ground level. I'd be interested in other peoples thoughts on Melksham's game.

There seems to be something just not right with Melksham. Ever since returning from injury he just hasn't been the same. He finished up with 20 posessions which I think is decent, yet those 20 posessions had little imact. He seems to not get enough of the footy for my liking. I think he'll play next week but to be considered as part of the best he must improve.

regarding the whole Butcher v Purcell argument,

i wasn't at the game and haven't really spoken to Butcher yet so i guess my opinion doesn't hold as much value, but from what i've gathered it sounds like Purcell did a very good job on him but Butch, (like any good player) was able to still influence the game on an off day. I don't think John was happy with his game yesterday (but he's one that marks himself very hard)..

The obvious one was Kyle Hartigan, you've got a likely Top 3 draft pick in Butcher and in Hartigan there is an AIS kid who plays as a tall defender and it might have helped a few people decide where exactly Hartigan fits in the equation had the selectors gone that way.

In the end Purcell and Metro did well containing Butcher, but perhaps it would've been nice to see a genuinely tall defender play on him.

Played CHB vs Keath. Keath kicked a coupel early but generally Talia had his measure. Great to see after his early season facial injury that he was still running hard and straight at the contest without any show of fear.

Hicks flashed in and out of the game. Kicked a goal but wasn't his normal damaging self around goals.

Slow start but got better the longer the game went. Strong at the stoppages as you would expect. He, Cunnington and Martin played a good physical style of game that gave VC the edge up forward and at the congested stoppages.
