FORMER Collingwood coach Mick Malthouse says he's still unsure what role Rodney Eade will play at the club this year. Eade has filled the director of coaching job Malthouse walked away from under the failed Nathan Buckley succession plan.

Malthouse raised the Eade appointment yesterday when asked if he expected the Magpies to change the way they play in 2012.

"The club's been fairly successful with a game plan that works, so I wouldn't imagine it would change much," Malthouse said.

"Look, I'm not privy to how, you know, Rodney Eade is the director of coaching. But if he has been employed as the director of coaching, one would expect that he would have a fair say on the game being played and would talk to the coaches under his care, which would be Nathan (Buckley), Ben (Hart), Robert (Harvey) and I'm not too sure who the other coach is quite frankly.

"But it's his role (Eade's) to ensure that the game structures are adhered to really, or I would imagine, but again I don't really know what his total role is either."

It's no surprise Malthouse doesn't know what Eade's role is, he didn't even give it a chance or know what the club wanted of him when it was his position to fill.

I don't mind Malthouse however, he's simply answering questions that are fired towards him. He has some pretty good insights too. The media do make him out to be bitter towards the club however which isn't the case.

I declare a "no shit Sherlock' on this one.

Is the sun coming up tomorrow?

You gotta love the HUN, more importantly, the HUN sub editors.

Amazing bit of spin this one. Malthouse says he literally does not know what Eade will be doing so they write "still unsure" to make it sound like he's skeptical instead.

I don't believe Mick ever really understood what the role was about, as this quote from the article shows ...

"But it's his role (Eade's) to ensure that the game structures are adhered to really, or I would imagine, but again I don't really know what his total role is either."

... the club's communication on this has always been consistant, and that this kind of responsibility was, is and will always be with the Senior Coach (ie: Buckley).

And Eade's role is to sleep soundly at night without a care or responsibility in the world with the phone on beside his bed should Bucks call in a fit of panic or self doubt.

Mick's quote makes me think that he would have not known how to hand over responsibility and that would have ultimately become a destructive force at the club.

I was a huge advocate for the succession plan, but I think what's happened with Mick leaving and Eade taking over has been for the best.

I like how they call it a failed sucession plan. Seems to have worked pretty well to me. We won a flag and Buckley took over at the appointed time.

Would rather have won 2 flags than the above if it was possible but injuries had more to do with it than coaching arrangements at the end of last season.

Injuries didn't help. Stupidity from players (Shaw in particular but also Thomas) didn't help either. I also think MM was poor and not for the first time. Happy to have Buckley now.

I actually reckon this was a bit mischievious if not downright dishonest on Mick's part. Mick must surely know that Eade has not taken the role that Mick passed up and to suggest otherwise seems a bit below him. The role that Eade has been given is nothing like a director of coaching role so speculating on what authority he may have over other coaches is just plain wrong!
