I should add in, I keep reading that our players are unfit (I'm struggling to understand that position given it is so early in the year) but if that is the case, then what training program & methods has Buttifant & co embarked on for the players ??

Obviously I don't know the intricacies of what they have done or are doing but surely our players should be in better shape after what the pre-season training periods are designed to achieve.
We are aiming for our fitness to peak for september.

For mine, we don't seem to be failing to run out games and its more to do with a lack of cohesion and willingness to run hard. If they aren't sure of their teammates and are playing with self preservation in mind, players won't leave their man or run hard to make space when they should.

I'm sure there is a gameplan, but the players are terrified of making mistakes they have lost all confidence when they have the footy.
I don't usually support sacking a coach mid year, but if Mick stays until the end of the year he might do a whole lot more damage.

It is a distasteful situation - any way you look at it...compounded by ham fisted statements by President and CEO regarding total rebuild required..with a constant litany of mixed self serving messages from Malthouse thrown in. You don't tell the world your players are shit- and then expect to get something for them when /if you try and trade. You don't tell the playing group - you aren't good enough - you tell each player how to play better as a team.

basic stuff really basic stuff - leadership and logic vacuum.

I disagree to a certain extent, I feel that we are struggling in the last quarter to run it out hence why Brisbane ran over us yesterday.

I also agree that our players won't run hard to make space but that could be due to wanting to conserve their limited energy levels across the whole match.

Either way, it's the coaching or training staff who are at fault.

pointedly, our Chairman has given Mick at least till season's end but wouldn't give Aquaman that same undertaking. Read into that what you will.

So Mick can coach like crap for the rest of the year then.

Performance doesn't matter.

Wow

It's not Mick, clearly it's the players. Some like Liam Jones (for example) just aren't up to the standards of this competition.

Question ............

Who is responsible for improving the player's tackling technique & aggression in a tackle ??

Putting Patty Cripps to the side (his tackling is first-rate), I'm struggling to think of anyone in the club who can execute a strong & dominating tackle right now.

Tom Bell, Nick Holman, Bryce Gibbs (when he can be bothered, of course), Clem Smith (when he catches them, bless 'im)

Bell!

Clem is pretty good and Bell is not too bad, but that is about it (I'm not going to give Gibbs any credit right now).

Who is developing our players in the art of tackling ??

It is such an important feature of the game yet we seem to be some distance behind the other teams in this area.

Do we have an actual tackling coach ??

It bewilders me that a so called AFL, professional level football club can have so many guys running around looking like they have no idea what to do next.

Other posters have mentioned this, but when you go in with as many as four negating players along with guys like Smith, Boek, Walker and Thomas, being overrun in the fourth isn't just probable, it's inevitable.

What shits me is that the Rebels train at our ground and yet the two clubs haven't put their heads together. Carlton's weakness? Tackling. Get Laurie Weeks or someone to show them how to do it. The Rebels' weakness? Marking...actually...never mind.

This is exactly the reason why our footy dept needs to be heavily scrutinised and turned over.

If we don't bring in Mick's replacement with at least 6 rounds to go, how will the new coach be able to gauge which players he wants to keep or chop?

The alternative is we back Mick and his team to make a list of names and hand it to the new guy as they are on their way out the door.

Hey mate, these are the players that need to go. I know our track record of managing the playing list isn't exactly sparkling and we got sacked for not being able to take the list forward, but you'll have to just trust us on this one. "
