He was a fringe player at WAFL till his break out season. 20 games at WAFL level isn't the greatest platform to launch yourself into the AFL from the get go.
Exactly my point. Perplexing.

No we shouldnt rush him, I wouldve just expected him to be further down the track readiness wise.

Couple of years ago, we played a Rookie listed Garlett Round One.

Jumper literally hung off him, would have barely clicked 65 kilos.

Showed some footy smarts, did ok as I recall.

Garlett's loaded with talent but he also played as a SF.

Boekhurst is going to be matched up on the likes of Isaac Smith and Stephen Hill who can run all game and then some.

I just wanna see mids that back themselves to kick goals.

Couple of years ago Murphy as a mid kicked more goals than Davis the AA forward pocket.

Him, Juddy, Gibbs never get near the 50 anymore, yet I watch a side like GWS (my new favourite), and they have fellas like Treloar, Shiel & Smith, who just go crazy eyes anywhere within 60, left or right foot, and back themselves.

Bugger the game plan when you have mids that can slot it 60 metres.

We turn too many of our x factor pacey players into half back man or back pockets.

He can rotate into the midfield later but he lacks the bulk and endurance to last as a midfielder atm.

Menzel, Docherty, Buckley, Rainbow, Smith and Boekhurst will have to play on the flanks until they are ready.

Graham, Whiley, Cripps and Bell are ready though.

Even nuggety types like Mitchell had to spend time as a HBF to keep them fresh.

Haha me too. Not sure if it's our mids or the game plans fault for our midfield never hitting the scoreboard anymore.

I'd prefer Buckley as a BP due to his line breaking ability and tenacity.
I'd like to see him have a crack as a small forward too. Great tackling pressure in the F50 is something we sorely miss. The ball gets rebounded quick and easy. It's been a long time since I can recall seeing scenes like Garlett, Betts and even Fev, when he felt like it, chasing down a defender when they were trying to get out of our F50 and getting rewarded with a free kick at goal.

Its also not the platform that should be used for drafting a 22yo with your first pick in the ND..

I think we were hoping for similar results from Clem, but it is clear he is a long way from being AFL ready.. Which is surprising seeing he has played the past 2 years in WAFL seniors.

What is the reason for the delayed start to the VFL... Seems quite ridiculous that our fringe players have not yet been able to play a competitive game to put there case forward... And an exhibition game against 17yo kids is not a competitive game.

a. 21 year old.
b. It was the right platform for Smith, Ballantyne and Taylor who were all picked up around Boekhorst's pick and at around the same age.

That's not to say he'll be a boom but it's not exactly unheard of

yep.

When did 21 years old become 45 well as well?

Hawthorn spent pick 19 on Isaac Smith (same age) and he's doing pretty well for them.

No doubt but Hawthorn were in a different stage of development than us, and also was a compromised draft so clubs needed to take risks. Isaac Smith played 16 games in his debut year if BB can do the same then i guess we can tick it off as a pass mark, but less than that I would have serious questions..

Just caught up with the last few pages.
The common denominator is so bloody obvious.
We have Malthouse, Murphy, McKay and anyone else pushing the party line that our fitness is not the issue.
To steal a word used overnight........... BOLLOCKS.

Dyl Bucks is being debated here, apart from the obviously underdone Boekhorst and Smith. Cast your memories back to when Buckley
played last season. We loved his attack, his run and his commitment. Every full game he played had a fade out as he clearly did not have
the tank. He has a place in the team. Probably best suited down back, but given the holes that MM's "fix" has created in our list, in the short
term, we need a quick, tenacious small forward. Unless we persist with the admirable but limited Ellard indefinitely, or allow the premium
priced Daisy to operate as a "role player", Bucks is the most obvious choice.

Our new boys are underdone, our established "stars" are unable, (let alone disinclined) to run both ways at the frenetic pace of the modern game.
The likes of Bell, with one of the best tanks in the team is played as a high half forward, not a mid. Curnow and Carrazzo, who by nature attempt
play accountable football are totally stuffed from carrying the load and are making skill errors or missing tackles. Our onfield leaders and vaunted
youngsters (read Murphy, Gibbs, Yarran and Menzel) are mollycoddled, and spend more time on light duties than doing the hard yard on the track.

I continue to believe that we have a decent list, up to all but the very best.

We are falling behind on fitness, preparation, player development and game plan. This combined with some square pegs in round holes from our
illustrious coach, and some bull-headed demotivation of players current (Watson, Graham) and recent past (Garlett, Waite etc). As someone who is
more old school than most I don't knock the hard line. The fact is a million dollar motivator should have the skills to harness the talents of under
achievers or under-committed, through creation of team ethos and a sense of belonging. The boot studder or any misguided keyboard warrior could
have chased Garlett and co. out, we paid millions to turn them around.

The game has moved past Malthouse and Buttifant, as well as the enablers and non threatening support staff. Before I get accused of ageism, I
will state that it is more arrogance and resting on one's laurels than a case of years. I have plenty of respect for the likes of Whiley, but he was a
decade away from the cutting edge, and is not the ideal foil for Malthouse.

Do not further decimate the list to appease the MM ego, the cattle is not the biggest issue.

 We're losing games BADLY with the current crew and Judd and Carrazzo are on the verge of retirement.

If Graham and Whiley are the next generation, we should be playing them now as part of rotations.

No Buckley? If we have a surplus of HBFs, move Yarran and Tuohy up to the wings.

Sorry Barker but the current plan is a failure. 7 wins last season minus Brock and Mitch indicates the tried-and-true aren't up to the task.

“For Nick Graham to play as an inside mid, he has to squeeze out one of Chris Judd, Bryce Gibbs, Andrew Carrazzo, Marc Murphy or Patrick Cripps,” Barker said"

Seriously Gibbs, Murphy are playing as inside mids coulda fooled me..... Carrazzo hasn't squeezed himself out?

If that's the case, put Murph on the wing. He'll cop less of a tag and can use his main skills, which are running his guts out and getting forward to use his smarts around the goals. Leave the bullocking shyte to people with less talent and more strength....or just a more genuine knack for getting first hands on the pill at a stoppage.

Gibbs has been undervalued around the contest this year. He had mid 20's touches last week and 12 tackles. If only the rest of the team got involved as much as he has.

I agree that Bryce is unfairly been lumped in the bracket of players not having a crack, he has been good without being exceptional, we know can go to another level but there are far worse problems we have than Gibbs.. Its a lot to lump on a 2nd year player but i think with Cripps in the middle extracting we will be considerably better and I will back him in to come good after a tough initiation against Richmond.

Whiley and Cripps into the middle this week thanks.

Yarran to a wing as well want him delivering ball into forward 50 not running it out of back 50!

It's gotta be either him or Walker on the wing....Walker has a better defensive game and can actually compete in the air, so have him further back. If Yarran's not the one mopping up then hopefully he can use his run to get out the back of the zones and kick some goals as well as being a bloody good link man through the middle where we tend to fall down when moving from one end to the other....
