I don't think he can get back to his best, to be honest. I just feel like he has been too injured and hasn't had the continuity he needs to return to form. I mean, he might have some good games, but he won't be utterly dominant on whoever he plays on and get thirty touches the other way any more. Hope he proves me wrong, though.
I think he has plenty to offer as perma-sub.

I'm not sure what Carrots would bring to the table as a sub. In the best case scenario, nobody is injured and the sub essentially comes on in the last quarter. The advantage he would have in being fresh is somewhat negated since he isn't overly quick. I'm sure he would have an impact through the middle of the ground, but I reckon what the Bulldogs did with Gia was the best way to use a sub - a fast, crumbing player who plays midfield AND forward. An extra set of fast legs through the middle and kicking goals up forward when everyone else is tiring.

Yeah I'd have a spot for Carrazzo. Nothing wrong with having a splash of old heads in the set up for balance. Wouldn't mind playing the Gia role as sub or even just to take a bit of load of Curnow. One takes the soft tag and the other the hard tag.

Save the sub for one of our quick skillful young guys like Boekhorst, Smith or DVR. They are impact players. This is a great way to give them senior experience as well as giving them an easy week every so often. Waste of time having someone like Carrazzo as the sub. Doesn't need experience and isn't an impact player. Only time we'd get something from it is if we lose a player early.

It should be mandatory that Carrazzo is given a spot in the senior 22 every game this year.

Anyone that can survive triplets all week deserves a day or rest and recuperation by playing a game of AFL footy.
Exactly. But how will Yvette manage that?

Two fold I suppose. Someone who can come on and come to grips with the game immediately...as games tighten and become increasingly contested in the last I think someone with his ability in close could excel.

Think the idea of an impact player as the sub is failed thinking. Too many times these guys wind up with three touches and a tackle in a quarter of footy.

Just as importantly I think the sub rule is the single worst innovation the game has seen in modern times. May as well give the vest to a handy out going veteran and let the kids develop with some meaningful game time.

Someone who can come on and immediately get into the game is definitely a requirement for the sub. Can't have guys coming in and getting 4 touches and a couple of tackles for the quarter.

Agree about the rule.

Ok Round 1 v the Tigers here is my starting Midfield

Wood in Ruck (Kruezer won't be fit and Warnock is just useless)
Murphy (Will be good to go)
Gibbs (Will have another great year)
Judd (Legend enough said)
Curnow (Prob go straight to Cotchin)
Thomas (Fully fit expect him to be back to his best)

Coming off the bench
Cripps (Looks Delicious)
Whiley (Got a feeling this guy might be the real deal)
Carrazzo (Think Mick will give him first crack at a midfield spot)

Either Docherty or Simpson will come off the half back line with the other to also play through the midfield.

Ok,
It seems a common belief that you need about 200 guy's who can rotate through the midfield these days. At last count we seem a little short of that number.

I know our second stringers try hard, but there are a few of them you really don't want with the ball in certain situations.

Menzel is in his third year, has the football IQ and the skills be a very effective mid, so why isn't he getting more time in there? I know clever forwards are great, but clever on-ballers (particularly ones who can kick goals) are muh more important.

Is it just fitness? I see Motlop was on the ball on a number of occasions today and I'd back Menzels ability in the role before Motlop.

Maybe he should concentrate on playing his current role consistently before aspiring to midfield greatness. He's no Stevie J just yet.

Last year Mick said " Menzel is already one of the best forward flankers in the league"

I think we are going to need him around goals more then we need him to have a run through the midfield.

Now that Bell, Cripps, Whiley, Graham etc are on the scene and Gibbs has moved into the midfield full time I'd love to see the 180cm, 80kg Marc Murphy released to play high HF or wing. He's one of the most dangerous run and carry players in the league and we don't get to see his match winning ability often enough when his small body is at the bottom of the pack.
Murphy isnt 180cm surely.
