I agree that Musto could do Sewells tagging role in the middle. This allows Sewell to then do Mitchells extractor role.

I believe we need Shoey's height in our backline so he says in. We should make minimal changes to our backilne and that only one of Gibson or Brown should come in.

Keep Peterson for his X-factor against the top notch Cats backline.

Thus only one change.

Either Gibson or Brown in for Mitchell.

The other thing that we could throw into the mix is Gibson into the midfield for Mitchell, allowing us options and versatility if we start getting too stretched down back.

It's an unknown for us, however he did okay there for the Roos.

Although I still think the Travis Tuck option is the better one.

I'm not sure he would have the fitness to be playing in the midfield after such a long time on the sidelines...but I could be wrong. You're right though, I recall him being BOG against port last year playing midfield so he can definetly play there if required

Hawthorn captain Sam Mitchell has undergone surgery to insert a plate to a slight fracture to his right hand.

The fracture was sustained at the start of the fourth quarter in Friday night’s win against the Western Bulldogs at the MCG.

Hawks General Manager Football Operations Mark Evans, said the decision to insert a plate was taken after it became apparent that Mitchell would miss this weekend’s match against Geelong due to the injury.

“Sam underwent surgery last night,” said Evans.

“We had decided that inserting a plate was the best option as he would have missed this week match anyway due to the fracture.

“The plate will give him maximum strength around the fracture site and he is likely to only miss one to two weeks, depending on how it settles down.”

In other news, Rick Ladson will be discharged from hospital today, having been admitted over the weekend for observation following dehydration. The Hawks defender was a late withdrawal from Friday night’s team.Injury update

Interesting to see Taylor's status. You'd think he'll have a few at Box Hill, no?

On the Mitchell thing.... I am by no means under estimating his influence on games, but the fact is we need to learn how to win without him. The whole team needs to step up. We can still win this game.

.

yes, many at box hill to regain fitness. I expect tails to play in the development squad this week. I would like to see lowden play in the seniors this week for his first game. Will be interesting to see how lowden copes.

All you can ask of tails is to get match fitness and lead the box hill team by example. Give him a month and judge him then.

We have a few guys that will step up in Mitchell's absence. I think Sewell, Bateman, Lewis and Burgoyne have more to give for the big occasion.

I think the talk about muston doing a tagging role in the midfield is actually a genuine possibility,

Geelong has an incredible midfield, however they are - with one or two exceptions - a reasonably slow midfield - Muston got shown to be a bit slow against essendon but still did well...if muston takes bartel and follows him I think muston could eliminate his effect on the game...

Hey we almost beat the cats last time without Sewell, Young, Burgoyne, and Skipper! So we can beat them with Mitchell on the sidelines!!:thumbsu::) With Brown coming back its all good!!

Add Muston to that who was missing last time too, and they had all their big guns too and yet we still managed to be 28 points up in the last term..

Someone please explain to me how Muston will be a tagger on Saturday.

I watched him closely last Friday night and all I saw was a Hawthorn player who allowed his opponent to find acres of space time and time again.

I sure hope that Mitchell won't be replaced by JKT. All due respect to JKT, but he's a clone of the 2005 version of Clinton Young, not Sam Mitchell.

Shiels or Tuck to replace Mitchell, for mine, along with one of Gibson, Brown and Ladson for one of Peterson and Muston.

Shield or Tuck should come in to replace Mitchell. Changes for this week;
IN: Gibson, Shiels, Ladson
Out: Muston, Mitchell,Schoey

Big blow yes but we have players capable of stepping into the role, we match up on the cats midfield better than anybody on paper. Sewell will be asked to put the hard tag on selwood, both hard nuts which will suit sewelly. Burgoyne is the added x factor, You would think cyril will play alot on ball as well, still think he will play on ablett at some stage, The importance of hodgey having a big influence has increased 100%, we must support him whether it be block ling or bump him everytime hodge is going for the ball, hodgey will be determined to stand up and make a stand, he has to. I dont think he has ever really beaten off a heavy tag. The other option is to send him deep to expose ling but that wont happen you wouldnt think with mitch out. Still think the key for us having a good game is to have 2 fully fit ruckman available which cost us the last time we played them. Doubt they will send ottens deep because we have adequate coverage this time around in skipper.

Mitchell is out whoever comes in will take his place in clarkos words replace one soldier with another. This will not change the way the Hawks will play or be cause for any excuse for losing

GO Hawks

Bugger.

Outs:
Mitchell Peterson Muston

Ins:
Tucky Brown Gibson

Tucky has the harder body (than Shiels) we need against the Cats and is the most like for like player and has strung a few ok games together at Box Hill.

Peterson is a flashy mark but in 12 games has kicked 9 goals and his forward pressure just isn't good enough for me. The harder body of Brown will be much better. If the Cats go small in the forward line as Ottens doesn't come up then move Shoey up forward and stretch the height of the backline (and either Brown or Gibson down back) especially if Harry Taylor misses a second week with his ankle.

Gibson or Brown would be better suited to the forward tag role than Musto as unfortunately the 3 knee recos look to have slowed his pace down. Getting beaten by Murphy, a player just come back from injury, on that turning circle showed me that Musto is ultimately not in our best 22.

I don't like to wish injury on players but i wouldn't mind Ling to miss another week with his back. They know they will make finals top 4 and with Mitch out they just may opt to give him that extra week rather than bring him in for what will be a pretty tough hard game.

No Mooney, No Johnson, No Hawkins (not that Hawkins in would worry me) - must keep Jpod and Varcoe quiet. We do this and we go a very long way to winning. If we can break even in the midfield they will struggle to kick a winning score. Also hopefully no Ling, Ottens and Taylor.

Unlucky. Just played his best game for the year too.

Ah well, a brief spell to freshen up before the last part of the season. The Cats have their issues too so if we are good enough we will still win.

Big loss, we struggled big time when Mitch wasn't in the team earlier this season BUT we didn't have Burgoyne yet either :thumbsu: and we are now playing much better!

I look forward to watching Cyril run down Ablett :thumbsu:

GO HAWKS!

On the subject of injuries and without wanting to start another thread, can anyone provide an update on Hooper's hamstring?

He is still listed as being 3 weeks away?

I am outside of AU and dont get to read all the AFL news.
