Mitchell Wallis & Thomas Liberatore

Well....there is not much not to like about the young blond boy in the number 3. He looks the part, moves a lot like his old man. His in and under work is very good and I thought he kicked the ball quite well despite what others have said on here. He handballs a lot, because he gets a lot of ball in tight and his role is to feed it to the runners. As they say, he's a good driver in heavy traffic.

Little Libber was perhaps more impressive on the day. He has amazingly quick hands and he is a very tidy left footer.

Both these guys will get better of course given time. There is no rush for them to be in the seniors this year, injury aside they don't get a gig ahead of Boyd, Cross, Picken, or Ward as our inside mids. In fact you'd argue that Addison is also well ahead of them. Sammy Reid if he can get fit also.

But in 2 years I expect them to be our number 1 and 2 extractors. Only they look more complete players.

So give them time, enjoy watching them develop, they will play this year, but there should be limited expectations on them this year at this club with our midfield.

Is there a better ability in AFL than being able to maintain your standard under pressure?

A guy whose son plays for the cannons, has been watching libba and wallis play there for years. He thinks that Libba is the better player, and that people will find this out in due time.
At least one recruiter sadi the same thing (reportedly) - said Libba's disposal under pressure is slightly better and under AFL pressure his disposal will stand up slightly better than Wallis' who is good when given time and space, but may find it more difficult in traffic.

If there ever was a lock on two kids making the grade, it's Mitch & Libba. I can't recall other draftees coming in and making such an impact during pre-season since Griff & Cooney.

On the small early evidence I have.
They are and will be ahead of;

Reid - Yes
Addison - No
Moles - No

If Reid starts playing like those 4 games towards the end of 2009 he is ahead of Libba/Wallis.

Even though Moles and Addison may be currently better I would not put them ahead of L/W because the latter have far more upside.

If ? That's assuming Reid ever plays again as we know it. Of course I did say on "early evidence" they are currently ahead of him in 2011 (not 2009).

I hope both of them play round 1. I think there are two spots left in the team and it's between these two and Djkerra to take them. Currently I'd have Libba and Djekkera. But really would love to see all 3 push for selection.

Searched through a few threads, thought this was as good a place as any to ask this question: Has there ever been a player that has got brownlow votes, but not been nomiated for the rising star award (whilst they were eligable of course)? If not, then I think young Libba may be the first.

I haven't done any research yet, just interested if anyone knows, and if anyone else thinks Libba is a chance at a vote.

I think we get to caught up in what is a Mickey Mouse award. Other than the guys who get nominated and getting recognition is always nice, but on scale of things it's meaningless.

We know Liberatore is going to be a good player. I think he was unlucky not get a nomination and should have in the early rounds. But the way they chose the award seems a bit of a raffle...and it's why it should be taken with a grain of salt...it's marketing tool for the AFL.

I agree with TempleKelvington. The award actually means nothing - at least for supporters. It's only use is sponsorship and marketing for NAB and the AFL. It's nomination system is flawed and only used to share it around and for it to be in the media(public eye) every week and it's voting system is also flawed(Anything with a panel is open to bias)

Would happily take Liberatore over a lot of the nominees this year and Jones only got nomination in the last round just in case he becomes a star and people point out how on earth this kid never got a nomination despite being rated as one of the best contested marks in the league.

it's still a little bit of a slap in the face

we definitely haven't been a media favourite this year

i remember gary lyon saying half way during the year that griffen needed to step up.......

I remember him saying that, but it's to be expected. Garry lyon has no idea about any other club apart from Melbourne. it's borderline embarrassing some of the crap he says.

......and he has proven correct. Griffen has the ability, skill and speed to be potential Brownlow medallist. But doesn't step up enough.. week in, week out.

Harsh. Griff and Boyd pretty much carried the entire midfield all year. It would be hard to make that jump to possible Brownlow medallist when the rest of your midfield is hardly helping you.

You are kidding right?

Griff for 2 years now has been more than consistant. A b&f and a pretty good first half of the year don't support this statement.

I don't know about anyone else but Tom Swift received 3 votes against Richmond last game 2009 and they gave the nom to jesse white for 3 goals and about 11 possessions.

There is sure to be others.
