Mobile TV Coverage - Optus Won

Who knows, but you would expect there is somewhere to move given telstra's comments.

Im sure there will be multiple appeals on the outcome. Im not too fussed, im with Optus anyway.

A headache for the afl anyway. Did the players association agree to a deal? or did they agree to disagree and will look at it again next season? Could be less money available to them now

I'm with Optus... now I want to look into this TV Now thing. If I can watch AFL on a 2 minute delay when I'm out of the house on my phone without getting charged for data, then I'm over the moon about this!

Okay - who's across this - do you need to be an Optus customer? I'm on Virgin which uses the Optus network - do I get some gravy?

This is nothing stop Virgin or any other company providing exactly the same service and if the decision isn't over turned on appeal then it would be a very safe bet that everybody will be coping Optus.

this is an absolute storm in a tea cup here
they cannot broadcast foxtel games, its no biggie. what is stopping someone going into an electrical store, tab etc to see a quick glimpse of the game. its free to air.... meaning its free

Channel 7 would be loving it, their audience to watch their advertising during football games just got bigger and cost them nothing.

This could open a can of worms though; essentially anyone now could offer a similar internet based service for streaming content they don't own and profit from it.

This ain't over yet. You can be sure Telstra will make a shitfight of this.

As others have said, this won't affect the Foxtel games, if the decision stands it will likely mean a re-negotiation between the AFL and Telstra, they won't lose all of the $153million.

Also, if Telstra are smart, they'll buy up FTA ad space and draw attention to the fact that they have 9 live games in their package instead of 3 (remembering that one FTA game a week is on 90 minute delay), advertising directly to Optus customers.

Costs awarded against AFL, NRL & Telstra:
In a statement, the AFL expressed its disappointment at the decision.
"We maintain that the Optus action is a breach of copyright," AFL chief operating officer Gillon McLachlan said.
"However, we are only in the preseason of this issue - it is highly likely we will appeal."
NRL boss David Gallop says the decision is "very likely" to be appealed.
"It is a major concern as it clearly has the capacity to devalue the ability of the sports to sell exclusive rights," he said.

The judge noted that some other issues in the case might still need to be resolved.
"These include whether Optus infringes copyright because the technology used to make a recording in the format suitable for certain Apple devices creates and stores six temporary files of 10 seconds duration every minute and then deletes the first 10-second file as the latest one is added one minute later," he said.

Justice Rares also said the case was not fully over until the parties resolved the matter of near-live streaming.
The parties agreed to treat the issue separately.

Blooody big tea cup you got there hamo:
And with the NRL set to renegotiate their next television rights, analyst tip the decision to cripple any deal by up to a fifth.

Optus' network is so congested as it is, that streaming live tv over it would be like flipping through a blurry picture book. This would be hilarious.

Not trying to start a which telcos better war, but where I am I get good Optus reception, and can stream cricket using the cricket live app fine on my phone without any issues.

But the Optus network has atrocious coverage, well at least in WA outside the metro area. Telstra is the only provider worth anything outside of the metro area?

Sorry OT but....the best thing you can say about the Optus network is that it is incredibly patchy. I reckon I get a proper 3G connection about 30% - 40% of the time if that, I really don't see a streaming service working very well for a lot of customers. They even sell a signal amplifier for the home FFS - and charge for it.
