Moloney

Even before the trade i thought he was going to be borderline.

The return of James Kelly along with the development in Koula and Bartel made me believe that Tweak would have needed to work hard to cement a spot in the team.

Given the form he was displaying before doing his hand - definitely in the best 22, although falling in the 15-22 range. He was a valuable player whose physicality could burst through packs and inspire his team-mates. Given that he was still so young and showed every sign of having a great future in front of him, then I have no doubt that the dees should be extremely happy with this trade. If it wasn't for the Ottens deal, then there was no way Moloney would have been traded.

Do u think moloney would have been in your best 22 in 2005?
can't believe some of you guys are deliberating about this. he would've definately been in our best 22. I don't think you can compare him to koula for a spot in the side for moloney would win hands down. put it this way - do you think melbourne would've been contempt with koula for their 12th pick?? I think not.

*cough*content*cough*not contempt*cough*

Agreed, I don't think Melbourne would have had any problems with taking Koula, he's certainly as good as Moloney and if Moloney had'v'e had the opportunity to stay we could have seen the two of them warring for a spot. Y'know, if Koula didn't take it outright.

how?? koulagirl is agreeing with me yet is suggesting koula is as good as moloney and that melbourne would have been just as happy with koula as it would be for moloney. it doesn't make sense.

I am strongly argueing that koula is not the player moloney is, and to this stage, is a fair way from him. I dare say the melbourne footy club would think likewise.

koula showed glimpses this year and gave indications for a good future, but you can't underestimate how important moloney was, especially earlier in the season. I thought he was pretty instrumental in turning things around for us.

Are you for real? It doesn't make the slightest bit of sence at all. Koulagirl is somehow argueing with jmain yet also stateing that she agree's with him. Got me Puzzled

He is a quality player but i for one am glad he was the player we gave up to pick pick 12.

The talk earlier in trade week threw names like Kelly and Tenace up. Pretty sure all would choose both of those two over Brent Moloney.

Offensively he is a very good player with his run and long, accurate kicking.
It is however his defensive play that severely lets him down as he is unaccountable and leaves his man free.

Moloney is plug and play. He is a reasonable player but doesn't have the scope for improvement as most other 20 year olds in the system. This is largely due to his already mature body. He may improve his accountability and general footy smarts a bit but the standard goes up a bit each year as well. He will be in Melbournes best 17-22 next year and will still be there in 5 years time..

he was easily in our best 22, i would not be suprised if he went on to win a best and fairest. Would take him over most number 12 picks in the past few years.

No doubt in our best 22. I would suggest that he would have been in bombers untouchable 15.Great enthusiasm when he goes near the ball . I could not fathom why the tigers would prefere pick 12. Demons did very well in the trades ending up with 2 1st round picks and Maloney and only losing Thomson and Jolly. Having said all that I would much rather lose Maloney than Tenace or Kelly.

Not sure about being in the 22, due to the iminent arrival of Callan and Tenace as permanent fixtures in the team in '05. Probably would have been battling with Koula and Tenace for the Wing position, meaning that we had 3 quality players for the one spot. I was dissappointed to lose Moloney, but fortunately we have another 2 players who are more than equal to him, and we got what we needed. We have plenty of players who can lay a good bump or tackle to provide that physical presence next year, especially with Mooney stating his intentions to get a run in the middle. Moloney was a quality player and would've been good to keep, but we will not miss him.

Then why was he traded?

I think people overrated him to be honest. He has a lovely long kick which will be missed but Koula is an improving long kick as well and he certainly made an impact late in the season. Moloney has the long kick and nothing else. He struggles to hit targets with short kicks and is a defender's dream with those long bombs to the forward line.

As for his big body, he used it once, against Essendon. He doesn't crash the packs as often as he probably should have. He prefers to hang out and receive the footy and carry it, he's not a Jimmy Bartel, that being an in and under player.

We've got Koula, Tenace and to a lesser extent Brent Prismall (who is almost a clone of Beemer, but with more strings to his bow, disposal wise) who can replace Beemer. To get pick 12 was a great deal for us and then to get Ottens with that pick, who will be more important to the side than Beemer would have been was even better.
