Isn't this just everyone's a genius in hindsight? Every club has had their first round misses and every club has had players they could have taken get picked later and become guns. It's swings and round abouts, win some, lose some.

Not all terrible decisions are only terrible decisions in hindsight. If you take your life savings and bet it all on 32 red on roulette, after you lose it's not a matter of 'ah well, couldn't have known it wouldn't land on it, hindsight is 20/20'.

And I present to you the Dayne Beams trade. I don't think 99.9% of Bigfooty posters would have made that trade. It took exceptionally idiotic decision-making by muppets at our club to pull that off. Hindsight wasn't 20/20, foresight and basic common sense was.

I'll raise that, we overlooked him 3 times and lost Burgoyne in the process.

Likewise, Tahlia, Gawn, Gunston and others.
I'll raise that. Melbourne overlooked Fyfe 4 times! None of those four are on our list and only one (Scully) is still in the league.

We wasted quite a few picks from 2007-2009 but also nailed some, Shuey for example.

Brad Sheppard was looking like a colossal bust around 2013/14 but he is now our most reliable player. Despite Fyfe, there were quite a few busts drafted right after him. Butcher, Lucas, Gysberts among others. It turned out ok in the end.

Mitch Thorpe is really the only big mistake. But the kid had incredible talent.

He just didnt think he needed to train. Or try. Or be a part of a team.

The amazing thing about that one for mine is that every time Hawthorn would have looked at him, they would have seen the other key forward lining up beside him as well, and it would have been hard not to notice him given his surname was already fairly famous...Jack Reiwoldt.

The other part I always like to point out about it is that for all the claims from Hawthorn fans and officials that they knew they had champions in Franklin and Roughhead from the moment they were drafted, they spent their first pick for the next 2 years on Key forwards (Dowler and Thorp)...hardly the move of a club confident they had those positions filled.

IIRC Roughead started his career at CHB, which probably influenced Pelchan/Buckenara's thinking?

For Carlton there are a few but one had a clear domino effect:

In 2009 the decision to overlook local Carlton supporter and defender Daniel Talia for Kane Lucas (who Brett Ratten was an advocate for).

This forced us to overcompensate a year later in 2010 and load up on key defenders Matthew Watson (18) and Patrick McCarthy (36).

Matthew Watson (18) particularly stings as Jack Darling interviewed very well with us and it really came down to a flip of the coin between the pair ... however the defence was deemed a priority.

GWS Giants had five live picks before Collingwood took Brodie Grundy, three of whom are gone. The daddy of drafting mistakes
you can end the thread now.
Yeah but that includes the top 3 picks that year. No one would have picked Grundy in the top 3 that year. It would be unreasonable to complain about that.

Admittedly, they had picks #12 and #14 and Grundy went at #18 so they'd be kicking themselves over those ones.

Still broadly happy to take best available but they should have a real handle on the local talent.
Its interesting because every year we hear WA and SA teams linked to and keen on the first round kids from their states, it makes sense, but I wonder how often they reach a couple of picks rather than taking best available in the top 20 and what impact it has.

Same thing for trades, how often do they make trades based on bringing someone home or getting picks to take a local rather than assessing the trade on its merit. I havent done the analysis but its an interesting thought.

Taking rucks with high draft picks-

Matthew Leuenberger, pick 4 2006 > Boak went 5, J.Selwood 7, J.Reiwoldt 13.
Billy Longer, pick 8 2011 > Toby Greene went 11.

Well, there are times when I'm thankful for it. For example, we took Gaff over Conca, and were astute enough to take Shuey at #18.

I can't recall WC trading for many non-WA players beyond short-term stopgaps like Drew Petrie, Tom Hickey etc. Jack Redden is one example of a medium-term best 22 player not from WA we brought in via trade but I can't think of too many others.
