Most popular sports clubs on facebook

So imagine how much people would like a club like Barcelona's page just because they know who they are or have heard of them. Have you ever clicked on one of these clubs photos or statuses and seen "I like Barcelona!", or something of that nature? Yeah, I have too.

yeah people just like things for news, to stay updated. a passionate collingwood man could like essendon and carlton on fb as well, it doesn't necessarily mean anything serious. it's only facebook.

Would you dispute that it is a reasonably accurate picture of clubs support levels?

Yeah, the Hawthorn "likes" have me up at night.

The same amount of effort goes into clicking the like button to say "I support team X" as it does "I like cheesecake".

I doubt it accurately represents anything.

Couple of interesting comments.

- I doubt many people "like" clubs they do not follow or have an interest. You could probably count on one hand the amount of Collingwood supporters who "like" Carlton on fb and vice versa.

- Agree Melbourne FC low support reflects an ageing supporter base not likely to use fb.

- Not surprised by the high support for State of Origin teams however I was surprised by the support for the NRL clubs. Brisbane Broncos is the most supported "club" in Australia. Given the support for the Broncos comparitively the Eagles and Crows are low.

- In the main the fb likes are = to the club membership ladder except Hawthorn. In reality Hawthorn's membership is the anomally as their crowd nos are well below Coll'wood, Carlton, Essendon.

Repeat my earlier comment this is a far closer representation of "support" than some Roy Morgan research poll that measures someone answering yes on a phone.

Of course it does. Doesn't have to keep you up at night but every hawthorn supporter in here including you is talking it down. I was just wondering if there was any correlation between this and hawthorn being low on the list,

To my mind no correlation whatsoever.

The numbers correlate reasonably well with Roy Morgan data, which indicates a degree of validity.

It's interesting looking at the most popular city for the big soccer clubs (Bangkok for all the big EPL ones last time I checked) the Crow's most popular city is Istanbul...
