I can just see it. After 10 rounds, with Essendon 2 wins and 8 losses, Hird will conveniently relinquish the head coaching job so that Bomber can assume the role. The club will say something like Hird's business interests outside football impacted on his coaching, and that he "will continue work under Bomber as his protege with the intention of taking over in 2 years".

If that's not enough.. The EFC have been pulling all the strings to get Hird to be Senior Coach since July.. Getting Thompson here has been a bonus, and something Hird himself wanted.
Also.. BOMBER DOESN'T WANT TO BE A SENIOR COACH AGAIN! If he was offered the position he would turn it down. Simple as that.
