Moving to Darwin

Hey all,

I have recently accepted a position which requires me to relocate from Brisbane QLD to Darwin, NT.

Just wondering if anyone on here has lived in Darwin or is currently living there and can tell me the good, the bad and the ugly?

Yeah all my mates up there bar 1 is up there to play footy. Seen a lot fly up just in the off season for off season footy too.

I moved to the Gold Coast early last year.

The cost of living up there is crazy but it's ok if you make enough money.

It is a bit of a police state so make sure you keep your nose clean.

I was never much of a fisherman myself but I loved eating the barra. Probably some of the least contaminated fisheries out there.

The heat is nice sometimes and other times it can be a nightmare. I don't suggest using airconditioning too much, make sure you enjoy the fresh air at night as much as you can. If you hear lightning coming unplug your modem, it's much more likely that your modem will get cooked through the phone line than anything else. It happened to me once but it was time to upgrade to a new ADSL2 modem anyway.

Be careful of crocodiles if out in the wetlands. They're everywhere and they're hungry. Many a man has been caught out thinking they weren't being stalked after spotting crocs nearby.

Be prepared for blackouts. The grid is shit up there and Power and Water are a bunch of drongos.

DRINK WATER! Can't stress this one enough. Good thing the tap water up there is excellent so there shouldn't be much problem.

Judge the aboriginals by their cleanliness and not the color of their skin or how well they speak English. Nobody likes a racist.

Beware of cracked lips in the dry season. It's like a desert. Lip balm is your friend even if you've never had to use it before in your life.

Nightcliff is fine but it's sorta in the middle. Bit of a cruise to Cas shopping centre and a bit of a cruise into town.

See if you can get closer to the city. Fannie Bay, Stuart Park or even in the city as there's a lot of apartment buildings that have gone up in the last few years.

I see you like drinking, shooting & fishing, from what she mentioned they are mainstream activities in the Territory (something I'd like, and she hated).

Humidity, seriously, be ready for it (of course this also depends where you're from).

Be prepared to face public drunkeness, verbal abuse and lack of hygiene on a daily basis (depending on where you live and what you do).

Yeah the is probably going to kill me, but I work in engineering so I'm office bound most of the time so it shouldn't be too bad.

I am going to try and find some hunting mates so I can head out bush and shoot some sh*t. I love that.

Enjoy your time, I really don't know how far you have to travel to shoot various things, but there are plenty of vermin in the N.T. (camels, buffalo, pigs), plus some tasty critters too. I'd love to shoot some of the bigger animals.
