I'm going to need a 4x4. Might start looking

Toyota. Everything else doesn't last in the NT. Everything under the bonnets just melts from the heat. It might be cool inside the car with AC on but outside when it's scorching it's like a fire in the engine bay.

Prado work?

Get yourself boxed up. You should need a step ladder to get in.

When the crossings rise it happens in an instant. You don't want to be the idiot that got stuck thinking that tiny stream wasn't a major river crossing.

Isn't Coconut Grove on the waterfront?

Next suburb up from Nightcliff, looked sad the last time I saw it compared to when I lived there in the mid 90s. It took me a week to get used to the humidity and not have an afternoon cold shower. If waiting for a cab from the CBD, you may need to be prepared to wait a little as some cabbies find it unsafe to venture down Mitchell st at night. Embrace the markets too on dry season Thursday nights and Saturday mornings.

I lived in Katherine for a couple of years and used to go to Darwin on weekends frequently. I love Darwin but it can be very expensive.

I was up in Katherine for work a month or 2 ago. Some great stuff to see, but also some pretty bad stuff. Was good to catch up with a mate there though. We were pretty happy to pull into Darwin again after a few days in Katherine.

What's the bad stuff?

Cheers I will!

Is the price of living up there really that bad? Surely if you manage your cash well it can't be toooooo bad?

Yeah luckily a lot of fruit and veg prices at coles/woolies are fixed it's just the power bills that are killer but knowing what the bills are like here in QLD I'm sure it's not much worse. Everywhere gets slogged hard for the coal and gas that was supposed to be our birthright as Australians.

I read that Brisbane actually has higher power bills than Darwin. Pleeeeaaassseeeee!

Gas is more expensive than coal.

NT and WA don't have coalfields close enough to the major centres so use gas.

If you don't need to have aircon going every night you should be ok. You just need good fans and good airflow and don't have a heat generator like a fast PC in your room if you can help it.

Do they still have those big NT longnecks you see in pubs?

Is the heat/humidity/dampness the same as SE Asia? If so, I don't see why you can only drive a Toyota. I see loads of shitheap cars driving around Indonesia. Maybe you could drive a Tuk-tuk and make some money ferrying tourists around.

Do Indonesian mechanics demand anywhere upwards from $100 an hour?

Rent is bloody expensive there. INPEX has taken all the avaliable houses for rent. I've worked there on and off for 2 years. It's fun for a little while, but I don't know it gets a bit much after another trip down Mitchell St

And don't even mention the wet season....

My cousin lived there for a while. She got sick of the population being so cliquey and transient - found it difficult to make friends, then the friends she did make would move on somewhere else.
