Re: Murray Football League (Part 5)

I heard an interesting comment yesterday at Australia Day celebrations. An ex-Tongala player informs me that two of Tongala’s longest serving players have been asked to give up their numbers for the band of new recruits. The players who have been asked to relinquish their numbers are Mark Reid and Julien Brennan. I stand to be corrected but I am pretty sure that both have played over 300 games for Tongala. For the President to request such a thing is pretty un-Australian for mine. Surely loyalty and a bit of respect must come into the equation.
Good to see Souter is going back to Tonny this year – word is that he has apologised to the Nexhips and eaten a bit of humble pie.[/quote]

whats this all about stinger?

Re: Murray Football League (Part 5)

Kimberly to Billabong Crows to....
Gives the young kids a chance to get some experience and won't be long before Numurkah are hopefully back up the top of the ladder however think the Nathalia vs Numurkah sunday game will be renamed the battle of the spoon in 2011
Numurkah has lost some good clubman and some not so good clubman, there will be blokes that'll return and some that won't. But the numbers and enthusiasium on the track says alot more about a club than a couple of old knockers! The blokes picked, will wear the Navy Blue with pride and endevour, WIN, LOSE or DRAW. The Blues thank the services of most of the guys that left. As for the spoon comment TimBurr, Thanks for you vote of confidence Burner! Enjoy Cairns.

Re: Murray Football League (Part 5)

looking forward to seeing finley on the improve after last yr. hopefully their recruits and the youngans can lift them up the ladder into contention. hearing good things from the deni rams camp with the mill re-opening, brings a few extra blokes to town.

anyone got news on the echuca united front? been very quiet - they say the quiet clubs are the ones you gotta worry about, somehow dont think united will be anywhere near a threat? my mail from up the murray way is that they havent been able to land anyone they have tried to sign. the gv forum says young david ismail is switching to united. great player from what ive read and been told. probably not gonna win them any flags if they don't recruit anyone else.

speaking to a bloke the other week who said moama are shaping up well again. not losing any1 except hudson to deni rovers? they'd be my early tip to go back2back.

Re: Murray Football League (Part 5)

With Moama, I've also heard they are looking the goods. Gus Grigg looking big and fit in the gym, as with Dave Armfield, John Micalizzi etc. Scambler has apparently been getting some BIG offers from other clubs but has decided to stay with Moama. Also haven't heard much from the Eagles camp. But, they could be the sleeping giant. You never know with Beattie, may have a few tricks up his sleeve. But usually something would have been leaked by now. Maybe the lid is on super tight. Any news Sippawitz?

Have heard this is no longer happening. Moama look good again would have to have cobram nervous with the big money they have spent, scambler, grigg and co are guns, will be an interesting year

Re: Murray Football League (Part 5)

Good to see that clubs without huge cheque books can keep players. Just proves that there is still some loyality amongst footballers, and that not everyone jump for cash.

Re: Murray Football League (Part 5)

Gez Tree Lopper sounds like your not happy with guys leaving your club and talking about loyality, what do you class as being loyal? the biggest problem with country football thease days is that the money is killing it, when you have young blokes coming to a new club that have achived nothing with there hand out for money its not on, in my opinon they should play 6-8 game and then if they are worth it then talk money unless they are a proven player, and dont worry im shaw numurkah would have payed out big coin for players before and then they have left the club, and it wont be the last time it happens its the way it goes these days.

Re: Murray Football League (Part 5)

Outsider, I completely agree with you in regards to young players. Cash is killing the game in the country. I'll clarify my first message, 75% of the players leaving are great blokes and are leaving for personal challenges rather than money. Guys who have never played outside of Numurkah. There were a couple that came, grabbed what they could then nicked off, better club for them leaving! I just like to see clubs like Moama, without the big cheque books, and dare I say it good blokes, win a flag, and then not all jump off for big buck else where. Have a look at clubs that have paid the big bucks at a senior level, most arre now struggling to field junior sides. When you crap on your good talented locals for ring in blokes that turn up, play, grab the doe and go. Often the club loses more than the money!

Agree with your posts Tree Lopper spot on.... but would have to think that the mowers do spend quite a substantial ammount of money on player payments. Correct me if im wrong

Substantially less than others from what I have been told. Scambler got a pay rise after last season, but still quite a bit under what he could have been getting from other clubs.

Re: Murray Football League (Part 5)

Not saying that Moama wouldn't have been paying out a good amount, but I would have thought it would probably be half what a couple of other clubs were spending. Agree with Tuckylives, Scambler could get a bucket load more elsewhere, but decided to stay, ok for a little more, but who wouldn't have upped his pay with his form last year. To only have lost a couple of players if any to other clubs is still very impressive.

Yeah was just curious, half of what other clubs are spending, top clubs have heard Cobram 200k + barooga regulary spend big dollars, toc did to win it, but clubs such as finley, nathalia ect prob spend less then moama, beleive finley spent around 55- 60 last year finished one spot out and will do the same again this year, each club too there own it is very refreshing that a club not spending the most or second most can win it.

Moama will lose Levi Moss and Chris Hatfield. Moss has been a great player over the last couple of years but lives in Melbourne. Hatfield was traveling each week from his home in Lakes Entrance to play. The pair's commitment couldn't be questioned, but no doubt the club will be able to draw upon a couple of recruits/juniors to fill the void. Blokes like Lachy Thorp and Ryan Hon, who initially missed out on a spot in the grand final team but was promoted after Gilligan pulled out sick, should be regular names in the seniors.

i would be thinking that numurkah will not bottom out like the purps did after there mass exit. but when you loose ten of your best 15 you are in for a bloody bumpy ride, you have some really good kids, but they still need to learn a lot about footy before they succeed, except james pruden who needs to get a injury so he has a real reason for being useless!!!!!

any truth that you guys are wanting to play practice games against kdl sides to get some confidence back in club

Numurkah will be up the top again soon with the quality juniors they have coming through and the quality blokes who have stayed.... as for blokes grabbing what they could then nicking off couldnt be further from the truth...

Re: Murray Football League (Part 5)

Wade Demasi has reneged on flying out of the hangar at the Kyabram Bombers to join Tongala. McLay from Wagga is supposed to have also fell through.
Other news from the light blues is that recently appointed thirds coach Kieren Brennan has stated in no uncertain terms that he will be doing the job his way and that senior coach Peter Bird was not to interfere.
The appointment of Brennan was said to be made without the full backing of the club President also.

Mike Sheahan signing off for the Herald-Sun.

Does anyone know the reason Demasi pulled out of Tongala, grass wasn't greener or?

Also with Brenan, Im sure the heirachy of the light blues would make sure that Bird has a say in the thirds as well. Keep everyone as a club, not just individual teams. Sure hope that doesn't cause friction as Tonny will give the finals a nudge this season.

On another front, have heard Beattie is bringing a couple from up north back with him. Not sure on names, but if anyone has heard I would love to know.
