Why would you bench Silvagni & Carey for Scarlett & Brereton?

Great team SouthSwans, The would be the excact same team I would pick except for S.Wynd only because I never saw him play.

If you never saw Scott Wynd play I assume you never saw Silvagni and Brereton play either, which nullifies your comments a bit!

Silvagni was a great full back, but I don't think he was better than Scarlett. Scarlett is more attacking from defense, and with cover from Fletcher they'd be a strong backline.

Brereton destroyed teams in the 80s, particularly in finals. He was as good a CHF as Carey. That's why Carey's on the bench.

I picked the team to play footy. SS's team has great players, but the forward line consists of three full-forwards, two centre half forwards and a tall midfielder. The half back line has 3 tall defenders and Chris Grant was really a CHF who played CHB on occasion. I tried to go for team balance.

1995 onwards. Don't remember much of the obvious superstars like Ablett, Williams, Dunstall etc. I saw enough of the good years of Carey, Lockett and Matera to rate them.

Suprised a lot of people have Dunstall before Lockett at FF. From what I've heard and read Lockett sounded the better FF, just. Wish I was born a few years earlier so I could see guys like Dunstall, Kernahan, Williams and Ablett in their prime.

KP Backs: Silvagni - included ahead of Scarlett because of his ability to swing forward. Fletcher - played on all the best forwards, 300+ games, two premierships. Jakovich stands alone at CHB. Scarlett, Mal Michael and Leppitsch unlucky.

Small backs: Wanganeen - redefined the back pocket position. McLeod - Inspirational big game player. Buckley - No premierships but individually the most clinical player I've seen. Not really a half back flanker but had to squeeze him in. Hardwick, Corey Enright, Archer and Brad Scott unlucky.

Wings: Buckenara, like Buckley, just clinical with the ball. Would excel in any era. Matera was the best true wingman I've seen. Leon Baker, Robert Harvey and Jason Akermanis very unlucky.

On-ballers: Williams, Voss are clear picks. G Ablett Jnr sneaks in ahead of Judd, Tim Watson and Kouta - who make the bench, but could easily be the best of the lot by the end of his career. Simon Black, Ricciuto, Jim Bartel, Paul Couch and John Platten were unlucky.

Key Forwards: Has to be Ablett Senior over Dunstall and Lockett for me. I'm not sure that Dunstall and Lockett's lead out from the square style would be as successful in the modern day. Carey picks himself at CHF and Brereton was easily the guy I feared the most as an Essendon supporter in the 80s... people forget how good he was.

Small Forwards: Hird and Matthews are the clear stand-outs here. Daicos gets a gig ahead of Brad Johnson, Phil Krakouer and Jeff Farmer. Paul Chapman and Steve Johnson could potentially take one of these positions by the end of their career.

Rucks: Madden was easily the best ruckman I've seen - phenomenal player. Rehn squeezes in ahead of Dean Cox behind his contributions to Adelaide's two flags.

Dunstall and Lockett were probably on par as FFs. I'd take Lockett if I had to choose because of his intimidation factor. Dunstall may have been a bit better defensively, but I don't really care about that. A FF is there to kick goals. Both players were awesome though.

I remember the season Dustin Fletcher debuted in AFL footy as a skinny high school kid. Sheedy had him playing full-back/CHB on players of the calibre of Lockett, Dunstall, Ablett, Carey, Longmire, Modra, Kernahan, Rocca, Lynch, Sumich. It was a frightening time to be a fullback!!

The 90's was a good decade to witness some of the great power forwards in the history of the game.

Late 80's as well. Every year there was at least one, sometimes 3 or 4 kicking the ton.

Guys like Longmuir, S Rocca, Sumich are probably a bit forgotten now but they had a season or 3 where they were kicking bags regularly. Even guys like Simon Minton-Connell used to kick a few bags a year

Some explainations for some picks , Langford over Silvagni just because he played safer and was more of a team man than Silvagni . He was the general in the backline during the most dominant era of any club during the past 40 years .

Doull over Jakovich , Doull was more adaptable and played smarter than Jakovich . Like Jakovich both incredibly hard to beat in a one on one matchup .

Dacios had to be in my best 22 , just a superb player and he played his best footy in the Centre .

G.Abllett snr F Flank , best F Flank ever , Buckanarra F Flank 2nd best F Flank ever . They had to play in those positions , Hird over Carey , Hird hardely ever lowered his colors , played in many positions and was just about the hardest player ever to matchup on . Hirds most important footy was played at CHF .

Salmon in the FP , chosen more as a resting ruckman , but he really knew how to play foward , very dangerous .

Dunstall over Lockett , Dunstall gave away far more goals to teamates than Lockett while kicking plenty himself .

I estimate Dunstall gave away 300 goals to teammates where as Lockett gave away maybe 100 , people say Dunstall played with better midfielders than Locket and that made it easier for him to kick goals . But Hangon , Dunstall also played with better supports forwards as well Brereton , Tony Hall , Paul Hudson . Whereas Lockett really only had Loewe to share to goals with .

Still they are clearly the best 2 Full Fowards in the past 30 years .

Hunter, Matthews, Ayers, Knights and Doull I never really saw but I know they were all champions, so I can only put up an argument to what I've seen.

I'm sorry but no Carey IMO can't classify a team as a best ever.

Also, Wirrpanda? Hird at CHF?

No Diesel? No Voss?
