Was announced today that we are playing first and last in the round 1 round-robin. Bombers first up and then finishing with the dockers:

From memory this means we can play a few more players as we have the break in the middle. Was trying to find the exact numbers but had no luck. So if anyone has the link that would be great.

Anyway thought I'd start a thread to talk about who may play, and whatever else.

Really looking forward to checking out the new players, and those I haven't seen all that much of like Weedon and Lycett. And of course Stevens.

:footy: is only 27 days away...

Last year I was mightily annoyed that we have non-consecutive games.

That was until I found out we can pretty much replace our whole squad - and as such provides a decent advantage on the rest of the teams.

Not so much in terms of winning the comp - because I don't really give a shizen about that - but being able to give give guys like Cox/Embley/Glass 20-30 minutes of football and get them off the park.

It also means our entire squad (who might be fit) will get a chance to show their wares.

We had 36 players roll out last year - I think the other teams are limited to 29. So it's an advantage IMO.

In saying that - it's bloody stupid and every team should have the ability to roll out who they want across the two games.

The whole idea is bloody stupid. Last year it was a necessity to get down from 18 teams in the first week to 8 in the second.

But if the rest of the tournament is going to be a round robin this year then why do we need to play the three-way contests in the first week?

I'm more excited than Big Kev at a Danish bakery clearance sale.

It will be interesting to see how we perform. Last season, I believed we had to win every contest we were involved in, given we had just finished last and needed as much confidence as possible.

This season, it's more important that we provide opportunity to the borderline players IMO. Players that we'll be relying on to maintain the team's momentum in the event of injuries to our starting 22.

Players I will be paying particular attention to are:

- Scott Lycett
- Murray Newman
- Koby Stevens
- Andrew Strijk
- Tom Swift

It's going to be a huge NAB Cup for Koby Stevens. He needs to do better than play well, he needs to dominate the competition.

I actually disagree on this one FS.

It's for the exact reason that no one gives a shit about the result - that I think having a lightning carnival works.

For mine - and I daresay all (or most of) the clubs - the pre-season is just a means to getting geared up for round 1. With perhaps just the last pre-season match a trial-run of best 22.

So as such, I see it as a good opportunity to give some of the older guys a short hit out to get back in the groove - as well as an opportunity to give the entire squad a run. Personally, I think it's a good starting point in terms of minutes played.

Just think of it as a shortened intra-club scratch match

Was pretty good watching the three team round robin games. Looking forward to seeing the new recruits in action.

I loved the format last year. Worked really well.

Excited about this one. It'll be the day after my second child is born, so I'll take my first son to visit mum and bub at SJOG and then take him to watch his first Eagles game. If he plays up, will leave for the second game and see if he settles down for the last game.

The way I understand it is win or lose we dont leave WA for the first 3weeks?

Im getting Foxtel installed purely for the new AFL channel tomorrow so mildly excited about that.

Im thinking of doing this

How much did it cost and are you locked into a contract?

I was going to go Foxtel on 360 route($30 no contract). However I am pretty sure their high quality can barely beat SD FTA TV atm.

So I switched over to the real thing. Called them up
$50pm 12 month contract free install
+$10pm for HD + $10pm for IQHD box to record and use HDMI instead of composite(im told).

I also paid $200 to get the 1TB box instead of $150 for the 320GB Box

So if you dont care/want HD you could do $50pm or the way I understood it, $70pm for HD.

Its not incredibly cheap but I figured thats like 2 days work for 6 months of uninterrupted 24/7 HD football. I can live with that :D

We should easily account for Fremantle. A lot of their good players are coming back from injury while I can't imagine them pushing their veterans like Pav and Sandi too hard in the preseason.

Essendon contest should be a cracker. Looking forward to it but since its on our home turf I would be expecting us to advance to the next round.

Does this include rookie listed players or just listed players?

In an article on Naitanui, he said he was aiming to play late in the NAB Cup so we may see a fair bit more of Lycett shouldering the duties in early NAB.
