Hey lads I made the trip to Mandurah and was an awesome game to watch, one player I think is going to be a gun is young Ben Newton, came on in the last and picked up about 5 touches in a minute and looked so calm and collected. Moore to me doesn't look like he is going to produce, just makes stupid mistakes and doesnt look like he knows where to run, although he had a prty good last qtr. Butcher is awesome! :D

Great to hear about Newton. Moore's apparent lack of polish and poise has been a recurring concern. Certainly, the radio call sounded like he dropped a couple of marks and let a ball or two go through his hands. Irons was another who sounded like he missed some targets by foot early in the game.

Heh, TSW and I had to back up poor Newton earlier this preseason, and now you will be eating out of his hand.

I truly am an intellectual poster :thumbsu:

There wasn't any footage taken, to the best of my knowledge.

Have already set the IQ to record the replay of 5AA's call of the Adelaide vs Brisbane game with accompanying 1080i Taylor Tippett screensaver.

Saw some highlights on the news...they showed Kerr's tackle and winning goal and a beautiful Butch goal from the boundary which he dribbled in. PTV should have organised some coverage though surely, I'm sure the coaches will be watching a replay lol

The mods of the chat thingy last night repeatedly mentioned there would be a highlights package up on the official site early this week.

Hi guys hope you dont mind me intruding.

Your team showed alot yesterday was really good.

Redden was impressive beat Coxy in the ruck knocks and tackled well, also had a big impact when wce sent Coxy to the foward line Redden dominated Lynch, and got first hands on the ball to your midfield.

Ben Newton, south freo kid came on the last and showed why i have always rate him, got a few kicks but looked like he had time and space and used iot well. Hopefully his endurance is improving because he has missed a lot of footy. He looked class.

Broadbent got the footy and used it well, I thought he was a hack last year but has definately improved looked good.

Wingard is skinny but classy should play round 1 he has talent.

Butcher was special was on guys who's heights is only 187 to 189 Wilson and Brennan, but even so he was very very good going to be a superstar.

Stewarts marking was very good.

Jacobs got alot of the footy and was good as was McCarthy who kicked some nice goals.

Only real disappointment was Hamish Harlett he was against Chris Masten, who ran him of his feet, he just couldn't keep up and spent a lot of time chasing butt, which probaly effected his offensive game.

You actually showed me with your draw you could pinch 8th spot on the ladder if everything goes well.

Thanks for the report, hopefully some footage will end up on one of the clubs or the AFL website.

Thanks for the insights Royal Eagle, agree mostly with your observations there.

For mine our backs and forwards were our strong suit. I thought our defence worked nicely together and stood up under pressure surprisingly well. The Eagles' press was evident yet our decision making and switching play back and forth was effective- compared to last year our skills have definitely gone up a couple of levels, we would have been slaughtered otherwise.

Our link work through the middle was reasonably fluid, remnants of the stagnant gameplan of yesteryear emerged for short periods but by and large we had far less trouble getting it through the middle than previous years.

Forward line was super dangerous with Butch making everything a contest, marking, kicking goals and crumbing superbly- it's been a while since I've felt this much genuine excitement from the ball entering our 50! His crumbing in particular was a credit to him since he was playing on smaller, agile opponents ;) D Stewart is slowly winning me over, outshone the Hoff again and took some great contested grabs roaming the ground. Let's hope this isn't a false dawn- Westhoff will find himself out of the Round 1 side at this rate.

Redden was outstanding and will give us some selection headaches in ruck. I made a special effort to follow his fieldwork and while he didn't mark much his ground work was promising, he laid some good tackles and wasn't afraid to get his hands dirty. What an effort from the young lad, Cox is a decent notch on the belt to have so early in his career.

McCarthy was in and under all day and is clearly the product of a better system- he found the advantage in 5050 situations and kept running all day, his two goals in the last illustrative of his match fitness. Paul Stewart continued his fine form from last week and did some nice things- I love his timely spoils and the clever 1%ers he puts in.

Banner just continues to perform well at AFL level- I still it hard to think of him as a goalsneak but he gets the job done and looks far more at home than Hitchcock and Phillips.

I've already spoken about Jacobs but he really burnt some demons from last week and I saw firsthand why he had been rated a good kick pre-draft. More of that please.

Newton as some have mentioned went in and got busy straightaway, didn't look out of place at all although he did come on late against tired legs- can't wait to see him next week.

All in all I just love the confidence this will have given the "depth" players of our squad which can only help to fuel the competition for spots in the side. While alot of these guys won't be playing Round 1 it just shows there's a huge amount of talent even in our depth players- the challenge for us will be converting that to match form, which our entire squad has struggled with for five years now. Hard not to be excited.

jeez, how did broady go? looks like he was super clean in his limited opportunities.

Broady was really good actually, he has such quality disposals but he still just needs to get involved more to justify a spot rotating through the midfield. Has a knack of getting out of traffic to release the clever handball, I hope he can get his hands on it more this year- fitness is the key for him.

I think Broady was another with limited game time (club website has the stats up now, including TOG for a number of the players). I hadn't realised that Blee was on the ground for more than a quarter.

A couple of mentions of Hartlett having a quieter game than expected. The observation above that he was following Masten is an interesting one, as Masten has been a maligned player albeit one who is still young enough to ultimately justify his high draft pick status. Hamish's match fitness could still be in question, given that he only played the one match in rd 1. Maybe he does find it that much easier to read and get involved in the play from half back and it will take him some time to become a dominating, hard working mid.

@Royal Eagle
Do you think that Hartlett was slow on the weekend slow because he doesn't want to fully test out his body or he has too much upper body muscle or that he just didn't have the "natural pace"

The effort must have been good , i was going to have a fair bet on them to beat St Kilda at the $4.30 last week but after the weekend its $3.55 now.
Still its not bad when you look at how good we have played St kilda over the years.
