I saw Freeman and Longer too but I'm sure they were getting KFC while smoking darbs and wearing inappropriate footwear ;):D

seriously though I had a ****ed back when I was young and the chiro blamed the all stars and once I stopped wearing them the back got better. He's a friendly guy Nathan, my son had his Saints top on from footy training and he said hello to us.

Are you GT. remember when the players couldn't wear thongs and had to wear some rubbish footwear. Lasted about half an hour. I don't think his footwear would be even slightly effecting his hammies.

I too had back issues which was caused from referred legpain. Was fixed by:

- making sure that the shoes I wore either had a good arch support or if flat to put some arch supports in.
- various stretching exercises

While I still get the occasional twinge my back and leg complaints have never been that bad again.

Even the thongs I wear now have arch support.

Plus one daughter was an elite rower. But she hated running. We had her fitted with a correct pair of runners to improve her gait and she went from hating running to being a very good x-country athlete as well. It also improved her rowing as her fitness improved.

Small corrections in your footware can make a huge difference for some people.

They are shockers all stars. I had chronic hammy issues from 17-22 years of age ruining any chance I had of having a meaningful sports career. I used to love wearing all stars but they'd give me pain in the calves as they had no support like you said and my physio said get rid of them and it helped.

A big part of getting over the issues I had was taking a year off and traveling and forgetting about my hamstrings for a while. I was just a nobody playing amatuer level football and it damn near ruined me mentally doing hammies over and over again. It's hard to describe how tough it must be for a bloke like Freeman who has a whole footy world keeping an eye on his hamstrings.

The problem is you just become so aware of them. If you are fast (I was always a sprinter and speed was my main weapon) having mental demons about your hamstrings is awful as you are scared to go 100%. Training is one thing, but in a match, instinct takes over. Running away from guys was when mine would ping as that is when you are TRULY going at 100%.

There is hope but I wouldn't wish chronic hamstring issues on my worst enemy. Especially if you are fast. Let's hope he is getting the best treatment possible and he finds a way back but it is a long, lonely, and mentally challenging road he has ahead of him.

Weird that no one at a professional sports club would have given Nathan that advice.

It is a bit weird.... the first thing my physio said when I walked in for rehab for achilles/hamstring issues was to stop wearing the all stars. Maybe it is just something some physios/chiropractors believe in that others don't.

Don't worry just had to make the joke saw an article or tv report where a podiatrist claimed they were worse then running in socks.

So you know all this but the people who are putting in many hours and so much money into Freeman don't? I'm suggesting Freeman and the doctors and specialists have said its ok to wear the shoes he is wearing unless you think Freeman just doesn't care and wears what he likes.

The Irish soccer player Damian Duff suffered from hamstring issues early in his career & it was suspected to be due to him driving a sports car (a Ferrari from memory). The angle that he sat it in & used the pedals put his hammys under constant strain & they then went twang when he played.

The body of an elite athlete is a very finely balanced machine & it doesn't take much to throw things out.

My feet are stuffed these days from wearing cricket shoes for years that had no arch support. I now can't wear the old cheapy thongs without being in pain for days afterwards.

And I was not a finely tuned athlete!

I'm not doubting anything anyone has said. What I'm doubting people suggesting he doesn't care or the club doctors ad specialists don't know how to treat him. I know no one has said that but by suggested his footwear could be an issue they are saying it without saying it.

IMO he is wearing runners he is allowed to wear. I don't think he or the club would risk his hammies with simple footwear.

All star converse are like 1950s retro shoes. They are literally a flat 3 millimetres of rubber with a flat insole. I wore them everywhere when I was younger and once i got out of them was like my hammy issues and back went away. I said it straight out i think they could **** his back up worse and especially hammies.

may be they don't check his casual footwear?

Where did I say or imply that?

Not that you will listen as you know everything, but what I actually said was shoes without arch support can cause SOME people problems and gave examples of this. My apologies that it is difficult for you to realise that people are different and that my post was on this issue and not on Freeman himself.

Maybe he has orthotics in his All Stars.
This.

But even then, AllStars are shithouse shoes to wear. Just a flimsy canvas upper with next to no medial & lateral support to stabilise the foot inside the shoe. I've never met anyone who can wear AllStars comfortably for long periods & not end up with aching feet or legs or both

I doubt they know TBH.

I remember seeing Michael Gardiner years ago getting around Southland & again a few weeks later at The Waterside pub. Both times he was wearing thongs.

Strange considering the thing that was keeping him out of the team were foot & ankle I ssues - Plantar fasciitis & Achilles tendinopathy - both of which are significantly aggravated by wearing shoes without any support
