The kid who was talked up over the preseason is sliding under the radar now so i think the club is just trying to get a good block of games into him with out him sprinting 100% during games being cautious.
Hope you guys going to bendigo will watch him and post how he is going and if you think he is holding back sprinting flat out

Drafted pick 10. 2013.
Which round will this happen?
Will be make it?
So much talk in the off season that he was killing it. Now he seems further away from a debut. What's going on with him?

Shit thread TBH.

Coming back from one of the most serious hamstring tears the doctor had ever seen, basically a 1st year kid playing good VFL without dominating and you are roasting him? Stupid.

Needs 1-2 more months in the VFL to build up confidence in his body and form, will probably get a game late 2015.

Fingers crossed he becomes the player we hope he will be. They all develop and progress at different rates. Some examples of others who took along time but are now good players would be David Armatige and Ben Cunnington. Both top 10 draft picks, both took 3-4 years to establish themselves. So considering he missed the first season on the list, he still has a lot of time before we need to worry.

Worthy thread. He's been up and running since September last year. Had a blistering pre season and can't feature a mention in the seconds. Second year on the list and can't get a touch playing 2nds footy. Top 10 pick in a really good draft might be wasted pick.

It's quite simple really: we have so much depth in the midfield/small forwards at the moment, that Freeman is just further down the depth chart at this stage. We also have Steele and Greenwood who are likely walk up starts once healthy, and Freeman will also be competing with De Goey, Kennedy and Fas (plus Ramsay and Seeds who should be back soon) for a spot when one becomes available... I think you'd be very hard pressed to find enough mids in our current 22 who could be dropped to make way for all those guys... particularly when guys like Crisp, Ox and Broomhead have been playing so well.

Freeman is a 19 year old who is coming off a season lost to a hamstring injury. He will get his chance in the seniors at some stage soon, but for now I see no problem in being patient with him and letting him continue to develop in the 2nds.

Yeah, it's strange, he was the young player who was being talked up pre-season ...

... It's no big deal really ...

... If possible we'll avoid carrying too many developing players, or new players, or players coming back from LTI in the team at any one time ...

... So far this year we've had Gault, Ramsay and Oxley. Seedsman has been playing his first footy games in a while. Varcoe and Crisp have been settling in. Even Broomhead is only up to around game 12 ...

... add to that DeGoey, Scharenberg, Moore and Marsh who are likely to break into the team at some stage ...

... and Kennedy, Reid, Greenwood and maybe Caff and Sinclair from LTI. Sidebottom will slot straight back in ...

... No rush to get Freeman or any of these players individually in before their time ...

... but collectively we hope some do come up soon because our depth is looking a bit threadbare ATM.

Yes. When Hawthorn were killing it in the 1980s, even their superstars served long apprenticeships in the 2nds. Dipierdomenico was a good example: 100+ games in the twos before he made his senior debut. It certainly did him no harm! If we can afford to carry young, developing kids for a while, then do it I say. I still shudder when I think of the way we tossed Josh Fraser in at deep end.

You said you wouldn't take him in the top 50 in his draft so why are you worried? By your rating he won't make it anyway.

Good call on Armitage and Cunnington. Freeman could be one of those types that takes time to develop his confidence. Hodge and Goddard were another two, admittedly thrown straight in at AFL level, but both took several seasons before they looked worthy of their high draft pick status.

He's barely 20 and has a lot to learn. He has time and we'll give him time. We have plenty of options through the mids so he'll play when he's ready.
Other players from his draft are now shining. Dom Sheed is getting a regular game taken after him. Salem playing better taken after.
Billings and Bontempelli Kelly Boyd all playing regular footy not just regular but good footy now. Freeman can't even get in the best for the 2nds. Should we be now worried?

We all know the story, Scharenberg and Freeman both struck down with season ending injuries last year.

So this year was always going to be close to a write off too.

Freeman is coming from so far back, didn't have much of a pre season, missed so much running with those hamstring injuries last year that this season is all about building up his endurance base slowly.

With every extra game of VFL he plays he looks slightly better, showing patches of the player he will become.

I won't judge him at all until at least this time next year, when he hopefully has his first full pre season under his belt.

Freeman would probably be playing in each of those sides except for maybe the Bulldogs. Also it's a bit of a stretch to say they're all playing consistent good footy, but that's nitpicking. Each of those players played a full year of footy last year and by no means did they come in straight away and make an impact. Freeman is basically a first year player, same with shaz.

If he's still playing this way this time next year then maybe we can be worried, but he's only played 4 VFL games so at this stage I'm not that worried. Strikes me as a guy who would benefit from the higher paced and cleaner AFL footy so hopefully gets a run in the back end of the year.

This thread isn't about Freeman, it's about you haven't got enough attention lately. Let's just be honest here.

Did those players rip their hammy off the bone in their first game?
