Watched Redlands defeat a full listed lions side. Was a arm wrestle up until three quarter time with the Lions just 1 point ahead. But Redlands opened the game up with a great last quarter.
Ash Mcgrath showed his class all day in his first game this season, and I thought no 43, Hayes played well for the lions.
For Redland, the ruckman , Hunter was excellent, gave Archie Smith a bath. Hughes is looking the best hes been since coming to Southport 4 or so years ago.And I say it again, Carse, just a gun.... instrumental.... gotta rank in the top 10 players in the comp.

A typical workmanlike performance today by the Bees, sharks really had no fluency in there game, Thynne, Darrin Stewart, Grayson were good for the sharks, Grose was terrific, Hutchinson played a good game, Sansbury and there midfield was on top as you would expect with no first choice ruckman for the sharks.. The game never reached any real great heights

Oh,. Dogey, Dogey Dogey,

It was only a few weeks ago on this forum that the newly recruited Mitch Brewer from Broadbeach was being touted as an AFL prospect on the horizon - unfortunately for Mitch, it looks like he has suffered a fairly major injury today (which no ones wants to see happen) - Was it poor team selection to only have one Ruck Man selected for the Sharks, or was that an oversight or was it just an arrogant selection decision? Isn't Ben the utility strong man, who is a Southport Legend a player representing the GC Footy Club selected for the AFLQ V VIC Amateurs game??? WTF.

The only real heights that were reached today was without a ruck controlling influence for the Sharks, was the ever widening gap between the competition as you tried to point out with your NT V Swans comments last week, this gap on face value seems to be getting wider and wider each week, next week the game between the Bees and the Redland's may be the game of the year without the Swan's, Giants, Lions, Suns and NT Thunder being involved, I wonder if it will get the recognition it deserves? A BLOCKBUSTER GAME FOR THE QLD FOOTY FANS SECTION OF THE NEAFL FOOTY SCENE AT LAST (will this be live streamed for all others to watch????) - REGION V REGION AND NO FLYING INVOLVED.

Sorry boys, Stuyd 1, LAB, etc, even with those mentioned as best players for Southport today- stop it, you guys who think that the Broadbeach and Labrador footy clubs have been weakened due to their better players switching to Southport to further their footy, it may be in vain as they all looked outclassed by a slicker, more skilled, hungrier Aspley side today. See you all next Sunday, where the standard and the results for the NEAFL and second tier footy in this region can only get bigger and better.

Some interesting results with Aspley touching up Southport and Redland beating a full strength Lions with top shelf top ups. What an amazing game next week will be at Graham rd.
NT percentage has taken a hammering the last few weeks and UWS have shot up into a commanding position. Funny to think that Redland, Aspley etc could meet Sydney and UWS in finals for the first time for the season.

Billy boy, how did you drag me in to this debate.

A great list, extremely fit means nothing at this level.

Far more to footy success than that.
Thought I was watching NEAFL at metricon tomorrow, was caught in Yamba for a couple of days off, so how in tune with Qld Footy am I really?

BB,
what sort of injury do u think Brewer has sustained?
Mate, Broady has been weakened more then any other club with the players that have gone to Southport.Theres 9 of them,,,, Brewer, Geary, Shreeve,Wells,Burton,Brennan,Mckenzie, Weller and Stewart, where 6 of these guys have played every game. Take 9 of your best players out of Aspley, and see how u go even at QAFL level.
Anyway, Aspley are looking ominous, gaining momentum every week after a slow start to the season by their standards.Redlands are up there at the moment and will be a great game next week. The big hurdle is The Swans and the Giants, especially the Swans....

I know im counting the chickens before the eggs hatch, but geez, it looks like a Swans vs Giants grand final. My point is,(as Ive said before), how the hell can semi professional clubs compete with the full time professional clubs.?? The ACT and Sydney clubs are even further away then in the past 3 seasons, Thunder is battling to be up there, and Aspley, Redlands,Southport are super competitive but will not match it with a full listed Swans or Giants side come finals time.
Billy Bunter, you are spot on.... as the season progresss , the gap in results gets wider.Honestly, how can u have a decent competitive comp that involves 4 AFL ressie sides, one NT side, 3 QLD sides, 2 Sydney sides, and 4 ACT sides. And after this season finishes, watch what decisions the semi pro clubs from each state want to do.. will be interesting.!!

Watched the first 10 off the 1st. My son fell over in the mud and we went home to get changed. Came back in the 2nd and that massive 54 wss out injured. Somebody told me he had lost 20kg....he was a presence

Correct,,, that no 54 is Brewer. And yes he has lost about 20kgs over the past 3 seasons,,, is still only 21 or 22 years of age.

stuyd1,

I thought Mitch may had done an ACL, it looked pretty bad from where i was, I hope for Mitch's sake it is only minor and he is back on the park soon and my medical assessment from over the fence is totally wrong.

Yes I must agree fully with the above post, even though we all hope we can be competitive against the AFL reserve sides - we are just all dreaming, but the AFL in adopting this NEAFL competition have no where else to go - even if they came to their senses and had a full AFL reserves comp??????? Where do the Aspley, Southport and Redland clubs go from there? any of these three clubs currently would belt say the top side in the QAFL being Morningside by 15 -20 goals every week - so there is no going back to move forward for these clubs - I don't know what the answer is on this, but I feel you are spot on as local side in this competition, will only be going through the motions towards the finals each year, until either one of the 4 AFL fully funded sides decide that they they want to win a flag.

Unfortunately for them, its just another piece of dust collecting silverware, but for our non AFL fully funded teams its the Wholly Grail.

LAB -You started this thread originally old boy, so I guess you are roped it to all things debated and said on here - I hope you catch plenty of fish on your break down at Yamba - Life truly is a Beach after all, again we are glad you are back even if you are just hovering.

Don't agree with UWS Stuyd1. With their seniors not going to feature in September as the season progresses they will pull the pin quickly on any players that need a clean-out to be ready for pre-season, plus the players will want to finish up at a similar time to their team mates. Sydney on the other hand will be extremely hard to stop unless they get a few injuries between now and the end of the season.

Seems like Redlands did alright against a near full strength Lions group...???? A few glass half empty people here. Would have thought if you wanted to slam an idea that you had a better alternative. Or is that just politicians that we expect this sort of logic from?

If the AFL pull out of subsidising the NEAFL comp bc they pulled out their 4 AFL sides and went to a reserves comp then you may as well kiss goodbye to a number of clubs that would be playing against the 3 Qld NEAFL sides bc noone could compete with these guys finanically, therefore the comp would be sloped one way for a long time, various clubs would endeavour to match it, spend beyond their means, fail miserably and go into bankruptcy. How do I know this? Because it is a pattern that has repeated itself for a while Australia over in AFL footy as egos get in the way of sensible decision making. At this point EVERY club in the top 2 tiers are where they should be based on financial capacity and ability to attract players. In fact once the canberra sides are cut back by a couple it will be an excellent comp with pretty competitive matches every week. The AFL sides will ebb and flow with injuries being the major determinant but in fact most of these sides will be blokes under 23 in any case with the odd out of form or injury comeback (Chris Judd??) playing games. I would still back the gun 25yr old (Carse) playing at Redlands over a top 10 draft pick who is in his 1st season of senior footy tbh.
Lastly, I think, depending on the numbers drafted or potentially recruited to VFL/SANFL sides next year that the nEAFL will become a very attractive place to play footy for many blokes around Australia. If you can get paid ok, play in damn good conditions for 90% of the year, a competitive high standard comp AND live in the SE corner of Qld then blokes will come. It won't ever match the VFL for standard but who cares. And if your club doesn't win the GF for 20 years, stiff shit, plenty of clubs around Australia who in reality have no chance any year of winning the premiership (some are too busy just trying to survive every year) but thats not why footy clubs exist, its about the environment they create to give blokes the opportunity of playing sport together and develop them as people.

Swans are limited to 15 listed players for finals series when playing non-AFL reserves sides (and NT?), that handicap will certainly even the field. The Giants, though, I believe have no restrictions.

With AFL lists only having 40 or so players I suppose a club would need near nil injuries to ensure every player is playing if the senior side was in the finals. I would imagine GWS have a few blokes who cannot play in the NEAFL finals like Callum Ward, Heath Shaw....

I'm just guessing like you are, but the normal practice for AFL footy nationwide is that a player has to have played in a minimum number of home & away matches to be eligible for finals - others will know more than me but I'm guessing that SIX is the magic number to qualify. No AFL comp would allow a finals team to stack their side from a higher level.

Extract from the regulations:

8.0 FINALS

page32image1576

8.1 Finals Eligibility

  1. (a) a player must play a minimum of three (3) Competition home and away Matches with the Club to qualify for the finals unless otherwise approved by the AFL.

  2. (b) Any Club that allows a player to play in a final contrary to these Rules may be deemed by the AFL to have forfeited the Match. If the Club wishes to challenge the forfeiture it must apply to the AFL in writing by no later than the Monday 5pm prior to the weekend’s final Match, so that the matter may be determined by the AFL.
8.2 Exceptional Circumstances

On application by a player’s Club, the AFL may, in its sole discretion, vary the number of qualifying Matches required where a player misses a significant number of Matches due to serious injury or under other exceptional circumstances.

Perko did u post this after you had 10 pints at the bees after a great victory..i didn't understand half of it!!! And who is Dogey!!!
Game of the year coming up this Sunday..promote the hell out of it and let's get a great crowd to Graham Rd..

Unfortunate injury to Brewer robbed me of his tussle
with the Aspley two . On a different note I note some are touting him as a Afl ruckman . Seriously this ruckman template was thrown out in the 80s . He would have to get a lot fitter than currently as the best ruckman are now very mobile . He may be just getting serious about his footy but there is little time left .

Jedf Turner fits that bill Vicman that you just described. ABout 6'5 or 6'6 so probably a bit small for ruck but gee he has been a revelation at Aspley i would have thought.

Yes I agree and number 6 is a very good backup and seems to play forward a fair bit . Nice combination.
