NEAFL - Northern Conference - Season 2011 - Part 2

Good luck to the Thunder on the weekend. They'll be a force to reckon with in NEAFL for a long time to come. All things considered, there'll be no NT team in SANFL for many years. Their departure would weaken the NEAFL Northern Conference considerably and remove significant AFL funding. AFL are prepared to throw in $$ to support and strengthen the competition. Why then would they turn 180 degrees and provide their blessing for NT to go south instead?

morningside the best team in qld 3 years in a row is a fair effort..... mtgravatt will be in the fox cup wont they?

I really can't understand why NT Thunder arent playing in the WAFL which is a much better standard. The travel time to Perth is similar to Brisbane. QLD & NSW footy is long way behind. There is no benefit there for NT. Also it will take the much hated bye out of the WAFL. Can anyone please explain why this is the case?? Thanks.

the WAFL and the clubs in it weren't too keen on having the NT come into the comp. when the Thunder were first formed.

i wouldnt class qld footy with nsw,qld footy is miles infront of nsw especially at state league level. people must remember this is the first time nt have won the flag and there previous best finish was 5th (only been in for 3 years granted). they do have alot of extra room in there salary cap, more home games and can recruit fom a whole state. by no means am i taking anything away from the thunder this year but they werent unbeatable or miles infront of anyone else.

Thunder would have beaten Port Adel and Lions on the week end.Top class players and very well coached.Congrats Muz and Tappy on your Premiership Medals.
Great effort by Panthers. No disgrace losing that one.As previously said best team in Qld 3 years in a row.

Agree with comments..NT ..too brilliant, too classy, too good. Congratulations on a fabulous year to all concerned in the Territory...their win was well deserved.

That said, its time to draw breath and review the first year of the competition and to tinker a bit to make a great league even better. I am sure most will have views on how this can be done but for me:

* Suns involvement needs major review. 53 fully professional players to chose, unlimited drawing power through the year to pull league players from other clubs gets them wins against oppenents and in to the finals. When they get there, they have new rules as to who can play????? My view is one set of rules...should have been the finals rules throughout the year. If they cant make the finals within these rules perhaps they shouldnt have been there in the first place. This isnt Sun bashing, their involvement in the comp is great, but it simply isnt a level playing field. I reckon there were some red faces come finals time

* Open to others for constructive ideas....

Would love to know where this AFL funding is going. NT will win just about every year if they truly want to. When you have an entire state to choose from plus have a bottomless wallet to buy interstate players that will fill roles for you- there's no stopping them.

Had to laugh at the Thunder CEO saying they don't have millions in the bank like people say. $2.5million over 5 years from government alone! Then you have to factor in that they have booming mining sponsor Rio Tinto as well as ERA behind their back.

Take this article for example of what they could do: http://www.ntnews.com.au/article/2011/09/21/261601_ntsport.html

Don't see any other NEAFL team even capable of contemplating going out and getting recruits the way NT do.

Look at the support staff that NT had on the weekend- it was basically a set up that mirrors any AFL club going around. Then you look at Morningside's bench which had a coach plus 2-3 assistants.

I would put big money on NT making the next 2 grand finals while they're still contracted with the NEAFL.

Yeah agree Lions - seems ridiculous to argue one of NT's advantages was an increased salary cap - very, very few Qld teams that would even bother if they had to pay the full salary cap, especially if it increased! Most are struggling along as it is.
I'm not sure that anyone from NT would use the mindset that if they changed comps they had to dominate - even if they finished bottom 3 in the SANFL its more about being competitive.

Not sure I agree that taking them out of the NEAFL would diminish the comp here - someone suggested a Nth Qld side which makes sense IMO - some magnificent stadiums in Cairns, Townsville and McKay (far better than anything we have down this way outside Metricon) - would be worth using and promoting the code in the state IMO.

Reckon blokes will still come to play in Qld for not just the $$ but lifestyle and work and if players are being drafted from this comp in due course then that is an arguement in itself for blokes to continue to stay and play.

First year for the Suns Maurie so it probably will be refined the process - I was playing when the "Cubs" came into the AFLQ premier div in the mid 90's and same issues back then. Tended to work itself out over time although after 13yrs still not perfect. Issue will always be that these 2 clubs don't really care about what they consider to be a 2nds premiership.

Suns should align themselves with a PHC club on the GC for top up players ala Lions and Magpies.

True Doc, but Aspley beat Thunder "away" and Broadbeach couldn't beat them at home. The Hornets played Mt Gravatt three times for one win as opposed to Broadbeach once for a loss. I think you have to look at what you actually did with the draw you were given. I'm sure Broadbeach would be better served analysing themselves than crying over the draw as you would seem to be suggesting is justified.

Nobody at Broadbeach is crying over the draw. Never heard anyone even mention it actually. Fact is the Cats lost several very close games, a couple where 40 point leads were given up, that's what cost a finals spot. Not mentally strong enough at times when it counted.

But Cats definitely improved in 2011 and with a young side that are all staying there is good reason to be optimistic next year.

Any early news on key departures for anybody?

I reckon allow them to play as many listed as they like (their list is cut by 2 spots next year), but as Maurie said have a set rule for top ups. For one Gold Coast players only. No problem with using PHC club players. I reckon teenagers only and guys that have played less than 10 senior QAFL/NEAFL games.

On this subject they need to look at the Lions ressies. Coming last not so good and if the comp keeps getting better, then without their rules changing, how will they ever win games? I suppose if their seniors get better then their 2's will get better.

I reckon as the kids develop at the Suns this will be a given 2010 - throwing teenagers into a group with nearly all teenagers may not have been what they thought best initially - not sure? But yes, it is absolutely ridiculous for clubs in the NEAFL to be handing players over to a side in the same comp.

I think the Lions ressies will always be suspect to the number of injuries at senior level - it wasn't that long back that they won the comp didn't they?

Will Nathan Ablett return to Broadie Premier now that he has been delisted?

Rhan Hooper went missing and not committed to footy. Wasted talent there. Not sure about Nathan Ablett. Didn't really deliver last time he was at Broady and who knows if he even wants to play anymore now that the AFL dream is no longer.

Reality is the AFL Blue print wont allow the NT to defect. This is not a league dreamed up by locals it is the AFL plan. They will remain in the NEAFL Northern Conference.

Clubs wont sell home games as freely as Marty sold them off. They will have 9 like all others unless a bully boy says otherwise. That will level it up.

Yes they are talented and won well but that will certainly test them. Credit where it is due which is right here right now - BUT it will change as things always do. List management, injury, player movement etc etc will all play a role. McLeod, C Illet, J Illet, J Roe, Rusca etc all have the right to change direction, get injured, retire etc etc. New talent will appear.

Premierships happen when the moon, sun and stars all align - Muzz made that happen and the skill is can he do it again. Tough gig.

Yes they will be up around the money but that is not a surprise, you know what so will Morningside and Mt Gravatt - that is there nature. in what order who knows - many things may happen.

Money only makes it easier or harder - it doesnt guarantee anything.

I must say though the NT element makes it a lot more fun.

most of the time it's the afl forcing the clubs to mover their home games to the N.T. they keep giving them extra home games and i reckon i know which club will be forced to take a home game to N.T every year

How much money is foregone to the competition for the games not held in Darwin?

You can't argue with the crowds that we get.

The other thing I want to debate is the "state" issue. Well, firstly, it's not like we're actually a state.

Secondly, there are only 120,000-150,000 people in the territory.

What is the population of Queensland, or the areas of Queensland represented in this comp, divided by the amount of football clubs?

I think you'll find the actual recruiting population, is not that different.

Good point
The catchment area is not a huge population.
What about Aspley - they have the only QAFL licence north of the Brisbane River !!!! You are looking at 10 times that population.
They joined the competition at the same time as Thunder and had a team ready made 1km away to take over !
Remember 4 of Thunder's home games are in Alice where there is no real home ground advantage and that is evidenced by their record.
People are forgetting that most players love the trip away and in time will learn to win in Darwin.

Agree with Open Forward Line - NT inclusion has added a lot of excitement and you have to enjoy the type of footy they play.

Certainly looks like Thunder have inherited "the tall poppy syndrome", let's give them credit for an outstanding season and praise them for the style of football they brought to the QAFL

You misread me 2010P. There was no suggestion in my post that the club was the one doing the crying. It was aimed at TD's suggestion that it would be justified.

Salman butt, why is it everyone of your posts has a dig at aspley. what is your problem with the hornets?

Sorry BigE wasn't a specific dig at Aspley just an example to shoot down this logic that Thunder have an entire state to pick from, just uses them an example of population base.
I surprised that everyone is focussed on Thunder's apparent advantage with extra NT home games. The more people talk about it the more they will psych themselves out for the trip away.

Surely Southport will have to forfeit their home game next year - in 3 years have travelled to Darwin only twice in 3 years and never been to Alice.
