NEAFL - Northern Conference - Season 2012

Certainly not the best way to endear yourself to the local community Stuyd! Reckon there has to be a vlaue attached to guys that takes into account their character and not just their playing ability. At PHC level and probably NEAFL don't think its unreasonable to write into certain blokes contracts that they must attend x number of club functions etc. and be involved in some junior development as well. Generally they find that this can be quite enjoyable as well!!

Unfortunately it seems these days alot of younger players are all 'me, me, me' and don't want to give much back to their clubs. Go and speak to the Morningside boys and find out what it is like to give back to a club and get the results they have. More life changing than a few extra bucks per game.

Yeah, must be very frustrating as a volunteer person on a committee or another job around the club.
I know its not so easy to do, but long term, gaining quality people that are there for the right reasons must run a long way ahead of choosing players based purely on ability. Have always felt that the Morningside model is the best one in Qld, whatever that actual model is.

On a similar vein, but a few levels lower, Nambour this year had a big working bee on a Saturday morning (a bye weekend) where all the players finished off the laying of the turf on the oval (big job!). Saved the club a packet and I'm sure, in some small way, helped them to this years premiership in Div 2.

NEAFL clubs expect a lot from their players these days- long preseason, keeping themselves in good fitness, recovery and rehab, attendance at functions etc. The vast majority of players would be on say around 2-300 per game or maybe $3000 per year if they play most games.

If you take off their costs- petrol, clothes, functions etc you could probably halve that amount. Not much for the commitment required.

The small minority of players who want to be paid above the odds and give nothing back are there but most are ok IMO.

SMY1305, this Nambour doin is a great example of giving to the club by all concerned. Great stuff.

2010 Premier, I agree, but this guy Harvey, whilst a good player, from all reports, is going from club to club each season choosing the club that offers the most bucks ,yet does not get involved in the off the field club activities whatsoever. Once again, this is only from feedback I have received from sources, ... it may be incorrect info. But ive even seen these kind of comments on this website in the Murray football league , Picola football league posts.Anyway, if it is not correct so be it, as at the end of the day, the guy is a talented player and should do well in this comp.

Hope his promised full-time employment is sincere and I wish Matthew all the best in his new pursuit.
If he wanted to play with his mates from his Zillmere days, he would have signed with Thunder, Sandgate or Wilston Grange as there are more Zillmere boys there than at Aspley !!!

Doc,

Interesting story on the Aspley news home page regarding Matty Paine, seems his employment has been locked in for the next two years and the club is a buzz with what he can bring to current the playing group this season, I for one am looking forward to the comming season with such a talent running around in a Hornets jumper - what price for the Premership for Bumble Bee Land at this early stage of the pre - season?

Footnote - it is very quite on the NEAFL web site with Marty King no longer sailing the ship, surley there must be some news of note to keep the masses up to date or are they (the gaurdians of the game) still in holiday mode?

Good news for the hornets. So the transfer fee has been paid?? Good to see they tried to keep a lid on the honey jar or what ever hornets produce. What about there losses though, surely out weigh there gains.

Morningside very quiet along with Mt gravatt....

Broady just idling and Labrador unsure few lost but only rumours.

southport have been busy have lost a few however have gained a few, however are waiting on the preseason draft to conclude.

Yeah agree 2010 but I'm probably talking about moreso the top end players who are on very good bucks.

i'm probably also of the mindset that its not what your club can do for you but what you can do for your club. Volunteers provide an environment for you to play a sport you love (I imagine). Maybe the hourly rate isn't that flash in the end but then there isn't another sport in Australia for you to go and play for the same hourly rate is there at this level? Not sure this should be anyones overriding reason to play but an added bonus.

Seems like the PHC may be benefiting from the increased demands of the NEAFL without maybe the corresponding pay packet??

I am sure that the corresponding pay packet will be increasing in the PHC comp as the class players who are dropping back will lift the profile of the comp and increase the support as well - good to see the second tier of AFL footy in Queensland is in a healthy condition and looking to an increase in standard.

Snorkle - was actually saying that the NEAFL has increased the demands on players but maybe hasn't been able to provide the pay that goes with these demands.

Agree re PHC - hopefully clubs pay what they can afford and its' not a case of getting caught up in the excitement of having a few high quality players coming knocking at their door. Would be great for the comp if a strong Surfers challenged the yard stick in Noosa and other sides like Grange pushed another notch as well so that it was a strong group of 6-7 sides. Was a good comp this year, looks like it should be just as good next year based on these reports.

Austin Wonaemirri signed with Thunder pending Draft/PSD.

Lets hope he doesn't get picked up haha.

It will be interesting to see what players do and don't get picked up in the draft with afl experience. Wonder I'f any will come up north, heard names like houlahan, twomey, mculloch, hunter, seller floating around the coast.

Seems for a skinny draft this year according to the experts, not too many mature age players got picked up, as a suporter I would rather a tried and true player who can play than what some recruiters describe as a project player - lots of project players dont get a senior game - so if you cant play at the top then what is the point of wasting valuable money and resorces on these guys. Most (top performing) VFL, SNAFL, WAFL and even NEAFL players would walk into the AFL format and be at home (Tinka will be the proof of this). Seems to me that politics in footy plays a bigger part than ability and to me, IMHO, it will an achilles heel for clubs who do not perform with these project players in what is now the modern era of the AFL.

Agree with all of this Snorkle. We have been watching the yanks too much, insisting on exact height and athletic ability (and being 17) as the major focus for drafting. Some blokes can just play the game. The VFL, SANFL and WAFL each must all have 10 blokes good enough and the NEAFL 1 or 2. The odd one has been picked up in the last year or two but I would have thought a lot more should have. Zorko will look like he belongs, I am pretty certain of that, and I reckon C. Illett could have been some value to GWS with his strong body and ability to read the game. Gun player, just not an elite athlete.

Agree guys but =if we actually watched the Yanks correctly though 2010 then they don't draft players till they are 21 which seems like a far better move IMO. Many wise heads here say our draft age is too young from a development / emotional and physical maturity view point. Some good articles recently written in The Age and the Australian (basically bc of the Moneyball film) that the AFL's whole outlook needs to change. Paul Roos has been bagning on for years about how overrated the draft is and its no surprise that the Swannies ahve been able to maintain a consistent level of high performance over a number of years with what is basically a side made up of very few superstars and some excellent recycled players.

When a 29yr old can be drafted by the best club in the land then I think it should make people stop and think. I predict that in the next few years, mainly bc clubs will have to due to the draft limitations with GWC / Suns that the over age players will be at the forefront. if they have good success then it will lead to this being the trend IMO.

Always made me wonder why clubs bother trying to "gamble" on recruiting a 10 yr player when the likelihood is that you will get 3-5yrs out of the bloke - why not make it 3-5 bloody good years rather than a few development years chucked in?

Not sure if the NEAFL rates ahead of the TFL does it or some Vic country / metro leagues just yet? Hard to say but it would be a massive thing if Zorko did well.
