New AFL Video Game - Wii - Q&A Thread

I will be picking it up on Thurs. I recently bought the Retro style controller and the controller used to play current wii games. Will the Retro controller work for this game. It says it's used to play gamecube games.

ok, have had a good play around with the game although im really not to sure what to think, game is very blurry ( panasonic full hd display running component 480p ) and does hurt your eyes after a while, first game played wasnt great, treacle slow players and game kept being interupted by meters and mini game tackles! went into options and turned all of these off, game was much better without these distractions although pace was still very slow, upped difficulty to hard in season mode and game was a little faster ( but still slow paced ). I feel some aspects of gameplay are better than bigants ( general play, no tacklefest, players can break away ) you can actually evade tackles and is generally harder to tackle someone, options definately better, but would reccomend people trying before buying, will post another view after playing a bit more. Oh and to wicked witch, how could you rate essendon at 66 and gold coast at 69?????

LOL thanks Hirdy.

Player ratings were based on last season's results where Essendon didn't fair to well. Same could be said of St Kilda. They have a high rating but currently sit 3rd last on the ladder, below GCS. Gold Coast have good players like Ablett, Rischitelli and Bock which lift GCS's rating but the rest of the players in the squad have a lower rating. As much as we would like to be able to predict the future we (along with most people) couldn't see Essendon going from 14th to 3rd. Please forgive us. I guess you will have to be as good as Hirdy and take Essendon from a 66 rating to a 5 star rating. We are looking forward to hearing your full review after you have played it more and we hope you are enjoying it.

Got to say the commentary is particularly awful. It sounds like it's being read off a script and at other times the commentary is just clunky.

Even worse is the crowd in the background. It's very very obviously looped and appears to be quite a short loop.

Soz.

Just picked up the game and can honestly say it is shit. Its just horrible. Will post up a likes and dislikes post tonight but first thoughts don't byuy it.

Thanks for the feedback Scotty. Sorry to hear you didn't like it. Hopefully when you explore the game more and get the settings to your taste you will start to enjoy the game. There is lots in the game, so knowing you only just picked it up, there will be plenty more features left for you to discover that you might like.

I got the game Tuesday and I reckon its a good game :thumbsu: The graphics aren't the best, but I'd never normally buy a sporting game on the wii anyway, PS3 is where to go for that. But the proper career mode made me hold out for this game and I'm glad I did.

I like the marking contests, adds a bit of suspense right before you jump on the back of gary abletts head to take a hanger ;) I find the game moves quicker the harder you put it: the mini contests, especially the centre bounce ones, take too long on the easier levels. So make the game harder if you don't like it or just turn it off.

Career mode is awesome, it's cool being able to take the mighty Stingrays out onto the park and smash a few sides up I'm looking forward to progressing through to the AFL eventually .... it's looking like this mode will see me getting my moneys worth at least :D

I dont have any troubles with having no marks in a game or having too many tackles ... it seems to flow alright for me. I'm surprised to see the negative comments so far.

Does anyone know if there is a secret button combination to start some biff? That would be the icing on the cake!

Can someone tell me the trick to taking marks? I just played a whole game without one. Even when it's uncontested and sitting in the green bit my dude just faps it away with one arm. I have the hang of handballing, spoiling, and am getting the hang of kicking but I don't know what I'm doing wrong with marking.

I am actually stunned at how incredibly awful this game is. I have just played through two games with a mate who purchased it and we have been unable to stop laughing at how broken everything is. Kicking is horrible, the controls have motion sensing tacked on for no apparent reason other than to make things more annoying and the graphics are so blurry you can barely make out where the ball is.

The concept is there, it's just wow. The game is simply a mess. The physics and animations are horrendous. The ball bounces over the ruck mans heads often and the skids off the ground more than fifty meters in the wet.

Only purchase the game if you want a good laugh, make sure you keep a hold of that receipt though! You will be returning it. The highlight for us was the player celebrations after the game. The players freeze on the spot and then spring into an overacted response before freezing again. It has to be seen to be believed. The game is bereft of any realism.

What would you say about the game compared to AFL Live?

What would you say about the game compared to AFL Live?

I love AFL Live, play it every day. I was actually considering buying the Wii version purely to support the efforts of a developer making an AFL game, but wow, I really can't condone this game at all.

The biggest flaw in comparison to AFL Live is the responsiveness of the controls. AFL Live has it's flaws but you can still envision something and then play it out in the game. It's strategic and the controls allow you chain together different styles of ball movement.

In the Wii version, you simply mess up the kick entirely or just bomb it long. The game slows down while you power up your kick which is ludicrus in multiplayer mode because you just sort of sit and watch while your opponent wrestles with the broken controls. It completely detaches you from the experience.

The graphics are ridiculous. On par with AFL 99 Playststion One. I refuse to buy the "Oh the Wii has less power than than the other consoles" line. This is PS1 standard and the sad part is, I am not exaggerating.

It may be a good thing this game has been made. In the space of a few weeks we get an example of how to make a solid AFL game and how to make a total mess. I find it hard to believe anyone (even the developers) feeling immersed in this game. The quick time events and constant slowing of the game make it all a remarkably lackluster affair.

Stick to PS3 version!

Worst game I've ever seen. Looks like a playstation 1 game to be honest.

Simply terrible, but thats just my opinion.

Fair enough, I might still end up getting this one. But fundage is lacking severely, so will have to wait a while.

Is sounding a bit disappointing though, especially after I'm having ridiculous amounts of fun with AFL Live.:(

I'm playing this game in Career mode as coaching Essendon, it's better than what some people are posting on here.

It is a good start to a series of the great game and I am sure with every release, things will improve. Atleast it is easier to coach and get results than Premiership Coach 2010/2011.

Just a couple of questions in career mode, does anyone know the best training to do during the week ?

And also, the best match day tactics would be great also.

Got it last night.

The game play is the worst of any AFL game I have ever played. Finals Fever was better than this.

But the Career mode is pretty decent, it's fairly in depth and seems to cover all the basis needed. I simply simulate all the games and go through training and sort out my finances because if I try to play thematch I'll probably end up throwing my wii out the window.

Will probably try a couple of careers on simulation and see how it goes then will probably trade it in or return it.

Anyway Big Ant could just get the career mode and implement it into AFL Live next season with their game play?

Would make an awesome game.

Hi Everyone,

Thanks Sonton, glad you like the game. We appreciate that you gave the game some time before posting your thoughts be it good or bad.

Don, thanks for the support as well. Marking requires pressing the button twice once to set yourself in the best location in the circle to jump and another to mark the ball at the right time. That should boost your mark numbers. If you are using a Wiimote, remember to hold it steady when kicking. Any twisting will curl the kick, which is great for bending them into goal from the boundary, but you will have to concentrate not to twist when trying to kick straight. Just like Wii bowling. Hope this helps you as well Billy.

B-Rock. Sorry you didn't enjoy the game. Most of the things you have criticised can be turned off in the options and it might be time for you to pick up a PS1 just to refresh your memory. You can chain together different types of ball movement with the 4 different kick types, but it is clear you prefer a FIFA style of gameplay which is what AFL Live went for where as this title is to be more arcadey. Maybe if you try turning off the things you don't like you might enjoy it some more.

Thanks everyone else for your support. We really appreciate it!
