New AFL Video Game - Wii - Q&A Thread

For us it was about the time spent doing that and the risk of a time blow-out against our other objectives.

I believe the Wii and PS3/X360/PC versions complement each other well enough and are different enough that you should buy both!!
Soooooo that's a no?

This game sounds more impressive than the HD one. Nice job getting all those teams in. The career mode sounds like it'll be pretty good. :thumbsu:

Sorry, good pickup rickbrah. Gold Coast is included and is part of our 70+ teams in the game. We are having issues getting the rights for GWS Giants so unfortunately they will not be part of Career mode which is disappointing as far as we are concerned. However you will be able to play with them in Quick Match and customise their line-up.

The PS3/XBOX360/PC version has a major focus on balanced online play which is a lot of fun and thus, as far as I am aware, will not be including the International Cup, TAC Cup, Under 18 National Championships and VFL.

We had a very strong vision for this title and unfortunately we couldn't get all our wish list into one title. Career Mode lasts 10 seasons and there is a slight blend of Manger/My player so that we set the foundations for potentially having a pure My Player mode in any possible sequels. It is definitely one of the most popular sporting game modes in this studio, we just were not able to put everything we wanted into one game. Especially considering how many firsts we have packed into this game!!!!!

There has certainly been communication and cooperation between the two studios to share the workload where possible as we both want to be able to deliver the highest quality, most fun product achievable and this allows us to focus on nailing the unique aspects of our own games. Yes our faces are similar to BigAnts however they are limited to the capabilities of the Wii. But don't fret, you will get an enormous kick out of how recognisable our player faces are! BigAnt have really outdone themselves and have completed some fantastic face modelling which I find a blast to finally play AFL with players I recognise in HD. Hopefully you all feel these two titles are the AFL games you have been waiting for. If both games get enough support both BigAnt and Wicked Witch will be able to improve their feature offerings for any potential sequels. Unfortunately if AFL titles continue to be less supported than Rugby games (even in Australia), it may be a long wait before other great modes like My Player ever feature in an AFL game.

We have some screenshots on the way so stay tuned. We just need to make sure that guernseys and sponsors are accurate for 2011 before we post anything.
Would love to see some screens.:thumbsu:

I wasn't aware TRU BLU / HES were publishing both developers titles. Possible over sight on my part perhaps.

Interesting they allow one developer to spill features yet the other isn't allowed to say too much. Info MUST be close.

Both titles will sell rather well so I hope tru blu share the spoils..

Wow, I'm very impressed. I'll be definitely getting the game on Wii as well as either a PC or 360 version!

While the gameplay might be a bit more arcadey, it seems as though the Wii has many more features outside of the actual games (career mode and such with proper trading and drafting etc). While in I suppose an ideal world you'd have one amazing game which incorperates the best elements from both games, I don't mind this at all. Hopefully with the Wii remote we'll finally have an interesting way of kicking for goal, not just some boring "stop the arrow when it reaches the centre of the timing bar" control.

Does this mean though that the game is made to be played with the camera behind the player's back and not a broadcast style camera? At least for when using the Wiimote and nunchuck?

Hi Everyone,

We have had a stream of questions flow in via email which is great however I thought I would take the time to post some of the answers to those questions here. There is also one point I would like to clear up.

Firstly, there is not a "Be A Pro" mode. Our Career Mode is tied to a profile character who plays his career throughout your managed years. It is merely a foundation for our studio in case we are presented with the opportunity to create a "Be A Pro" mode. As mentioned, internally it is our favourite game mode so we would have liked to incorporate it into this title, however it was not possible for this title. Sorry for any confusion.

Competition Mode
• Can play a normal season with just one team
• Can play the season with as many teams in the league as you like.
• No custom competitions
Career Mode
• If you start your career in the AFL and play well the board will have no reason to sack you and you can complete your entire career with the one team. Alternatively, you can start your career in the TAC Cup or the VFL and look to get job offers at the end of the season which will see you change clubs. The better you play the more job offers come your way. Do poorly and you will probably be disappointed with your job opportunities.
• Players progress, get older and retire.
• Yes, there is a Draft
• Yes you will be required to scout. A scout is one of the staff members you can hire. However, you do not need to actively send them out to different locations during the season. They are professionals and they know what they are doing ;). The scout will help reveal information like player potential and club loyalty. This is useful in both trading and drafting. In trading you might be able to get a bargain if a player is not very loyal to a club. In drafting the scout will help ensure you use your draft picks wisely as a player with greater potential will train up their attributes much faster. The more you spend the more information you receive but be careful not to blow all your budget on your scout as you will have to juggle other key financial aspects and staffing requirements.
• Rookies are on our club lists but you cannot list mature age rookies or international rookies specifically. If they are on the club list for 2011 you will find them there.
Gameplay
• There are 4 types of kicks: drop punts, torpedos, snaps or check sides and grubbers.
• There is only one type of handball but the further you try and handball the more elevation it will receive.
• There are different meters on screen but the game works without them and can be turned on or off in the options.
• Rucking is different to the previous AFL games.
• New commentary from Dennis Cometti and Brian Taylor.
• There is no online play!
• Camera can be set behind the players back (which seems to be the preferred way in this studio) or a more traditional broadcast style plus a few other options.
Miscellaneous
• The NAB Cup is in its 2011 format however you will not be allowed to play with GWS Giants. As mentioned this decision is outside our control.
• There is not a create a team feature. There is a team editor so if you are really keen to load up a team with all your favourite players you can do that although it's really so you can keep a clubs playing list up to date ;).
• We are not allowed any retired players. We did push for legendary teams etc but the final decision on this matter was outside our control.

Again, we are keen to release screenshots as soon as we can so that we can show off how awesome this game, so please be patient :).

Probably going to get this game now, might have to dust off the Wii, shame because I hate the Wii, but this game looks so good I might have to.

Ooooooo an animated GIF

I can understand the no online play with Nintendo's terrible online structure. I'm guessing it's more or less the same thing to do with the no DLC too.

Interesting that the behind the back camera view is the one for this game yet over on the PS3/PC/360 it 'just didn't work'. Definitely tells me that the gameplay and controls (probably via the wiimote) influence the game and how it plays a lot more.

Liking the season modes with TAC Cup and VFL sides, might have to try that out, always love playing from the scrubs through to the big leagues, will enjoy being Coburgs coach then moving onto the Tiges.:D

I'd love it if you have to flick the Wiimote for a shot on goal and that determines how accurate the shot is (as well as the player's skill of course). You could then perhaps hold the B button and swing it to the left or right to do a checkside or banana respectively. I'd probably prefer a behind the back camera because as a player you're almost always looking forward and the side on camera, unless it's pulled right back, doesn't allow you to see 70 metres ahead.

So does this mean GWS are part of the NAB Cup but unplayable? Or is the 18th team just a custom team?

Hi Ray

Just curious if you and your team looked at implementing pointer controls for positioning your team mates in the game, similar to how Pro Evo does on the Wii.

In my mind, AFL would be the perfect game for this control method. Being able to direct other players exactly where and when you want them to lead or to drop back into space in defense to cut off the opposition forwards would add a ton of depth to the gameplay. The only drawback would be that you would need a camera view that with quite a distant zoom, but I think the positives would far outweigh the negatives.

Anyway, as I said above, just curious if you guys looked at this method.

This version is also looking interesting, I guess I'll buy bother versions.

I have one question are all players in the different leagues licensed ie: real players or made up names? I didn't spot it in posts, also keen to see some sort of screen shot.

Believe this may answer your question below.

Indeed it is, sorry and I miss read that the first time.

That's a lot of players to be included, for a first AFL game on the Wii this seems to be a big entry. Looks like the Wii will get a use again after all.

Now it seems I'm like I'll be getting two versions of AFL and have no time to watch the footy, better buy an extra TV so I can do both.

The fact this supports the GC controller is what i wanted to hear. So many potentially great games dont allow it (looking at you Donkey Kong Country Returns) so the fact you are catering for gamers who dont like to waggle (le sigh) makes me smile.

It will never be better then Aussie Rules on the NES, but dammit being second to that is an honor, not a negative :D

Is this the cover for the Wii game as well?
