5. Demetriou's denials don't change the facts
Charles Happell writes:
Before we break for Christmas pudding, a glass of sherry and an afternoon snooze in the rocking chair, let’s get one thing straight: the Crikey story on Monday which revealed how the AFL was death-riding the Kangaroos was absolutely spot-on.
Don’t be fooled by the lame attempts at denial coming out of AFL HQ, or the frenzy of damage control being done by its army of spin doctors. AFL chief executive Andrew Demetriou wants the Roos out of the picture so the League can seamlessly introduce a new team from the Gold Coast, if not by 2010 then some time soon afterwards. A major facility at Runaway Bay has been earmarked as the new club’s home. The Roos’ decision to spurn the AFL’s offer of relocation to the Gold Coast has, in Demetriou’s words, played right into the league’s hands.
Demetriou has called the Crikey story "complete rubbish"; AFL Players Association chief Brendon Gale thought it "absolute rubbish". At least the spin doctors have got them singing from the same page.
But they know, as well as I do, what was said in the Montague Park café in South Melbourne last Thursday and they know how damaging these revelations are now they are out in the public domain. Any AFL move now that obviously discriminates against the Roos will be seen through the prism of that discussion, and surely come under heavy scrutiny.
It’s amazing what falls out of a tree if you shake it hard enough. Soon after the Crikey story appeared, details emerged from a meeting Demetriou had with Kangaroos directors on October 31, the day the Herald Sun announced the Roos would refuse the League’s Gold Coast offer. Enraged at being snubbed, just when he though he had the deal over the line, Demetriou went into the meeting and tore strips off the Kangaroos’ directors for being incompetent – even worse than those at Melbourne, he said – and issued the veiled threat that the AFL’s financial support of the Roos was not inexhaustible. Some directors were shocked at the ferocity of the attack.
The Herald Sun, which has consistently applied intellectual rigour to the debate over the Kangaroos’ future, followed up the Crikey story and ran it on the back page on Tuesday – despite protestations from the AFL.
Gale said last week the Montague Park chat about the Kangaroos lasted five minutes; this week he had cut that back to just two minutes, and it occurred only as he and Demetriou were standing up to leave.
His role in this episode begs one or two questions. Here’s the union chief, the working-class hero and man of the people, who is in discussions with the boss man, the employer, about the imminent demise of one of Victoria’s 10 clubs. That’s potentially 40 or so of Gale’s union members without a job.
No-one suggested he has been complicit in this behind-the-scenes deathriding, because there is no suggestion he knew anything of Demetriou’s plans until being told about them on Thursday. Indeed, Gale said little in the café, just listened – perhaps with incredulity – as Demetriou brazenly outlined his vision.
But Gale is now most certainly aware of the AFL’s scheming. So the question is: what’s he planning to do about it? It’s great to have a cosy relationship with Demetriou but there comes a time when the red flags have to come out, heels have to be dug in and the workers protected. It would be a bad look indeed if the AFLPA stood by now – gormlessly – while the league went about its euthenasing of the Roos.
Christmas has come at a fortunate time for Demetriou, Gale, the league and its embattled phalanx of PR types. Everyone will take a holiday, this unseemly talk will die down, pre-season training camps will dominate the sports pages after January then the league can get on with its business next year.
But for the Roos’ chairman James Brayshaw and his new board of directors, somehow Christmas turkey this year will seem slightly chewier than normal.

Happell isn't backing down.

It's an interesting lone voice of dissent in an ocean of spin.

You need to provide a link...

Time for Happell to put up or shut up. The story posted is basically the same as the earlier one plus a bit more invective.

I can't see any reason why his source wouldn't come forward. The meeting took place in a public place so they are hardly breaking a confidence.

And why hasn't anyone else come forward to corroborate the story? Surely there were others in the cafe who heard the remarks.

How about we start with the other 2 parties getting their stories straight on this issue?

What did they talk about? When did they talk about North amongst their conversation? And how long was that issue talked about?

Ideally, Happel should provide some sources, but as long as Dimwit and Gales story doesn't make sense between themselves, then the suspicion is on them.

Time for the AFL to stop the spin and come out with a plausible explanation on this.

He said she said blah blah blah......

I assume that nothing has changed and North are still gonna be dog's meat?

Demetriou and Gale have said the story is "complete rubbish". They haven't given it any creedance whatsoever. I'm not sure what else they can do. Its up to someone else to put them on the spot if they can.

If Happell wants the story to run he needs to provide new information.

If this is true, this is going to have repercussions for Demetriou. His integrity and character would be seriously tarnished (if it isnt already). Quite surprised at how strong Happelle is sticking to the story.

I ask this as an impartial, objective observer. If, as I expect, no sources are revealed, how can the AFL, and in particular Demetriou disprove the story and restore integrity? Do they need to?

They have both denied it, yes.

But Dimwits and Gale's recollection of the events have been very different when asked for comment, and their stories have already changed several times in the past few days.

Somethings up.

If you heard the interview with Brendon Gale on the radio, he was far from convincing on anything he said.

So where's the analysis of this in Happell's story?

If there are inconsistancies between the two versions of the meeting then any journo worth their salt would be taking the two versions apart piece by piece.

I can't see where Happell has done this.

Let's be fair-dinkum.

Somebody who has been as highly respected and entrenched in the sports journalism industry as Happell can surely, at least somewhat, be respected.

Secondly, Andrew Demetriou lacks charisma. I just doubt whether I believe much of what comes out of his mouth at the best of time.

Nice way of saying Damien Barrett doesn't buy the AFL pr spin because when he writes his stories he calls a $53mil package a $53mil package not a $100mil package, as opposed to Caro and Patrick Smith who are feed AFL pr spin and leaks and continue to call a $53mil package a $100mil package.

Dont you love the lynch mob.

A journo does a piece, admits he was not there, it was 3rd hand information. Wont name the sources. Yet its is believed totally.

No member of the public has come forward after hearing said loud conversation in a small cafe though.

Both people who he said said this stuff have both strongly denied it.

yet they are cruxified on what evidence or proof or anything really.

Fine if the source comes forward with a tape of the conversation . This is over a week old, and no one cares about it.

The cred of the journo may be impeccable, but he does himself no favours with no proof, and being a north supporter( as per what was said on their board).

The problem is AD said he didn't speak to Gale about our club at all during the meeting, in Gale's press conference he said they spoke about the club for 5 minutes.

If it was a police investigation, not saying any crime has been committed, the police would see the lack of consistency in their statements as a pretty strong indication of dishonesty, especially if the journalist has claimed he has multiple sources that all said the same things were being said. AD has a track history of lying in press conferences and Gale is a lawyer, I do not need to say much more...

If you were a juror on a trial would you believe two people who can't get their story straight or the prosecution who has multiple witnesses saying the same thing?

So what if he did say it?

It's not like everyone doesn't already know that the league wants rid of the waste of space basket case. :thumbsu:

Are they after West Coast as well? :p

So what has changed for North - Nothing

On the contrary, it changes a lot as is reported in that article. Any decision the AFL makes in relation to anything they do regarding us will be seen in a very different light.

The truth being out there makes it harder for the AFL to sabotage the club and we now have people like Eddie who want to see iron clad support from the clubs in the coming club get together.

Eddie knows what AD is up to and he is not cowardly enough to just sit back and let it happen. AFL have lied about 17 teams, gold coast viability and bluffed their way to this position and the NMFC has called their bluff and AD doesn't want to fold.

It will be a very difficult environment for AD and Gale in the future, if the sources of the article go public it will finish their careers in the AFL. They have come out and said the story was rubbish, their reputation is on the line and if challenged they are history.

In terms of what it does for our club, nothing. At the end of the day it is up to us if we survive or not but at least we wont have the AFL secretly conspiring against us any longer. That makes our job a lot easier.

Demetriou has a "track history of lying in press conferences" ...Huh? Evidence? Links? I won't hold my breath.

Like I said before if Happell or any other journos want to line up the quotes from Gale and Demetriou that are plainly inconsistant (and materially so) I'd be happy to grant the point.

Otherwise it remains just an unsubstantiated story.
