New book We Are Essendon details supporters’ suffering

Remove this Banner Ad

They have FA on Tiger supporters who have been suffering boisterously for 35 years now. And counting. Who can I sue?
And Saints fans who over the last 2 decades or so have seen trips to the finals - thereby ruining decades of free Septembers...and Blues fans for exactly the reverse reasons

More insights from this book, Dodoro definitely was picking Lobb and Cripps, and Zaha still. doesn't. get it.

'"We were playing for top spot in round 18. Then we end up getting kicked out of the finals. It was so frustrating, we were ready to be a successful club again. It's no accident you are playing for top spot, you have got a good side if you are doing that'

no accident indeed...

I posted the below on the Carlton forum a short while ago. Thought I might post it here too.

Things are going to be different this year at Easter time in Essendon.

First up will be a re-enactment of the last supper. Present will be disciples including; Bruce Francis, Rohan Connelly, Stanton, Chip, Zaharakis & Judas Evans.

On the Friday, the Hirdilites will then proceed to block off Buckley Street . A person playing the role of Maximus Demetriou will order the crucifixion.

During the procession, the person playing the role of the accused will ask for water. At first no one comes forward. Then suddenly someone comes from the crowd and ushers the accused to an off-site side street and provides some water. Strangely, no one asks this person what was in this water.

During the crucifixion, the accused is heard whispering “we will be in a good place when the truth comes out”. At his feet playing himself is the Virgin Mark Robinson; sobbing uncontrollably.

During the Passover, the Hirdilites in a symbol of great sorrow will watch replays of the 1999 Preliminary final on big screens erected all along Buckley Street.

Afterwards, a stoning of Satan will take place. An effigy of McDevil (McDevitt) is presented and the stoning commences in full earnest.

During the pass over Gary Ablett Senior walks into a pub in Essendon to place a bet on the next race at Flemington, only to hear from a Hirdilite “why have you forsaken us God”. Gary stares back blankly and proceeds to place a bet.

On the Sunday, commotion is heard. “It is true, it is true; we have risen again” as they parade their no 1 pick down Buckley Street. “God has not forsaken us after all”

In the years to come the disciples would write about the accused and how he took the sins of others upon himself.

The Gospel according to La Grand

The Gospel according to Francis

The Gospel according to Stanton

The Gospel according to Zaharakis

Revisionist rubbish from Dodo
It would rely on Carlton not taking Cripps.
Then Lobbe went for a pick that was lower than EFC's 2nd would have been from finishing in the 8. Would have had to have reached and used their first pick he was planning to take Cripps with.

about 2 years ago, it was said the deal for Crameri to the Dogs was Pick 4 to Essendon for Crameri and our 1st.
Which was to be Bont and Merrett.

Who knows what would have happened had we kept the draft picks then.
But in hindsight, im happier to have lost them in 2013 & 14 and landed Merrett, Fantasia & Laverde, than potentially losing them in 2015 (Parish) and 2016 (McGrath & Ridley).

I have started reading it, said I'd do a review for Chief

I've only read the first 30 pages or so, it is pretty obvious you're reading a "kool aid" perspective but hey, it does what it says on the tin.

The bit I find troubling is the way the author talks about how after Fletch's 400th he was walking out of the G with his missus, fuming, and one of her friends texted to ask why Fletch had been benched, and she asks him, and he flies off the handle, ranting and raving.

By the time they get down to near Richmond station by his own admission, and he's screaming at her in the street, people are asking if she's OK, it all sounds pretty ugly. She moves out a week or so later.

Now, he does admit this and doesn't shy away from his actions, but this is couched in a context where basically, he feels he'd been driven to the edge by the "supplements saga". It is very obvious from the whole thing he doesn't accept they doped and got, and the unfairness of this pursuit of his beloved club has pushed him to a mental state where he engages in what reads very much like domestic abuse to me.

YEAH FREAKIN' NAH PAL.

That is no excuse, that's pathetic.

Anyway, I'll finish the read and write the review, too early to bag the whole thing, and he does write quite engagingly about how he fell in love with the Bombers as a kid, being at Windy Hill etc.

But that bit left a really bitter taste.

Jeez, I remember boring my then partner with my whinging about how the AFL was trying to kill my footy club with the Gold Coast stuff. But I never used it as an excuse to abuse her, because, well, men don't abuse women.

i remember that game. It was a bit of a shame for him to go out that way.
But that is ridiculous. I love the club as much as the next fan. I dont think i've been angry at anyone during this saga.
It doesnt really affect me or my life other than we put up with some frustrating games (Adelaide & Saints games in 2015 were hard to watch, but more for the players looking mentally cooked).

i really don't get this book and what it achieves.

Yeah, on the first page when he's describing the saga he talks about how WADA was "comfortably satisfied" - he uses the quotation marks - that the players doped.

You know what you're in for from there.

At the same time, as Sting once sang, do the Russians love their children too?

Of course Essendon fans love their club the same as anyone else.

It is just that no other supporter group sacrifices babies in the middle of a pentagram marked out by red and black candles to try and influence results.

(That's a joke btw, I'm trying to read it with an open mind for reviewing purposes)

What a coward.

I wonder when the carlton supporters book about suffering will be released. You'd think after a 15 years they would have enough content

Still another 5 to 10 to go. It'll read like, be long as and be as just as enthralling as the bible.
Parts of the Old Testament are sensational and brilliant. The New Testament is not as good imo though Revelations is indeed revelationary. For influence and sales, has anything ever done better? Oh yes. Perhaps this chestnut has.

Perhaps a Challenging Read too.

Didn't like my post? So forgive me...

The
So you don't think people have struggled or should have struggled mentally throughout the last 4 years given everything that's occurred? You don't think people might read it and potentially take solace from it? I find this stance from you of all people quite hard to believe.

Idiotic and a joke. Well, you've set the tone of this thread beautifully. For anyone still confused about why this board has been punted to where it has, look no further than this thread.
They 'struggled' mentally because they got caught cheating and tried to cover it up.
That is why.
Maybe this should be a lesson. When you get caught cheating - own up.
And dont lie to testers either.
This whole thing could have been nipped in the bud if there was one decent human being in that club back in February 2012. But there wasnt.
Guilt plays with your mind. Regret makes you depressed.

The supporters did none of the things you pontificate about in your little diatribe. It's a book about the supporters experiences presumably having to deal with geniuses like yourself for 4 years whenever the subject of football comes up.

don't read BF or the Age then.

On that basis Carlton supporters could write a book about 15 years of stress and the salary cap breaches

He was probably feeling the guilt of taking a pay cheque from the bombers when he was only there as a charity case.

Shouldve retired years earlier but play your handful of games a year son, we will get you there.

The AFC board have always had this same revisionist look at ''what if'' . Yet despite the sanctions I would not hand Rory Atkins back or some others. Out of the gloom sunshine appears

Looking back, we've done a mini rebuild while the focus has been on other things. Dropped lower on the ladder than our list should have, lost some players for high picks, and got a pick 1 in
Key is to is take this list to the next level and make the 8 this year and hopefully top 4 in the next 3

I think this year will be a slight stall while some get full fitness back, but next year will/should see the one of the biggest ladder rises in the last 20 years
