The $2.5 billion given to Queensland by the IOC is an easy income source. And compared to what we were budgeting for with a $2.7 billion Gabba (State government) and $2.5 billion Brisbane Live Arena on Roma St (Federal Government) this will be significantly cheaper.

They’ll be able to save money and build a bigger stadium at an accessible site with no disruption to the Lions or cricket.

It wouldn't be bulldozed beforehand. The new stadium would be opened with the Olympics, then have to be reconfigured a bit afterwards.

Therefore, in that scenario, the Gabba would be an obvious choice as the main venue for hosting the cricket in 2032.

I have mentioned on the Lions board Victoria Park will not be considered by the review committee.
Victoria Park is one of 5 temporary venues for the Olympics see image below.
Under the "Terms of Reference" set by the Qld Government the Review committee should not even be looking at Victoria Park.
There are other issues with Victoria Park that the IOC would not approve that particular site for Olympic Venues.
I won't go into those on this post.
Below taken from the Qld Government "Terms of Reference".
There are other documents in the Terms of reference that pretty much exclude Victoria Park too.

It’s been reported that the review committee have already been briefed on the Vic park proposal so I think from that they’ll definitely be looking at it.

Also its status as a temporary venue for the BMX seems irrelevant as the review would be assessing it as a permanent venue for a new stadium instead.

Personally, i would not believe anything that is so called "reported".
Even if they have been briefed it should be ignored just like the John Coats proposal after he had a meeting with the committee.
Coats proposal was also outside the Terms of Reference.

We will just have to see what comes out of the review committee recommendations due on the 18/3/24.
 
People reference a Victoria Park stadium as being close to the Exhibition Station that will be on the Cross River Rail Line. The same as the Gabba with the Wollongabba Station on the Cross River Rail Line. So both locations will serve the same lines.

However a Victoria Park Stadium gets the added benefit of being a 20min walk to Roma Street, Central and Fortitude Valley Stations. Which means every line can be a single trip to the stadium, where as a transfer must happen to get to the Gabba. But even better, special event trains can be put on that runs to each individual line, whilst that wouldn’t be able to be achieved from Wollongabba.

It's really the best of both worlds for all parties. Makes you think the previous premier rushed it all to get the announcement and point score

I think they were hell bent on the Gabba rebuild because they just spent billions on cross river rail and didn’t want to seem like they made a mistake choosing a Gabba station. And at the time Vic park wasn’t seen as an option really for a new stadium, it was more likely Albion which doesn’t benefit from Cross River Rail at all.

But yeah it really does make the most sense transport wise, they get to use the new Exhibition station, the Gabba will get 7 years of its new station and then afterwards there will be enough high density living in the area to justify it easily.

It will be strange in Brisbane to actually build infrastructure before allowing massive high density development - even if it was pure accident

I heard a rumour some time back that one of the reasons for the Gabba rebuild cost blowout, besides the materials shortage and general inflation, was that it was being used to hide some of the cost increases on Cross River Rail. I have no evidence for the truth of that rumour though.

Problem is these maps don't show the slopes involved. It's a decent uphill slope from Roma St and especially from Central to Gregory Tce, and then a steep drop from there towards the ICB/Exhibition line.
 
The stadium review that will determine what gets the go ahead will be revealed in 7 days time. There are two main options left (the Gabba rebuild is dead):

1. “Brisbane Bold” - An Olympic Precinct at Vic Park with a new 60-70k stadium, the Brisbane Live Arena, the athletes village and a new indoor swimming centre. Estimated $2bn in savings from Gabba plan.

2. QSAC & Suncorp Plan - an upgraded QSAC to host Athletics and an expanded Suncorp to host the Ceremonies. Brisbane Live Arena to move from Roma St to another inner city site. Likely to cost less than Brisbane Bold.

Reading what the Courier Mail has put out today, they are pushing for a new aquatic centre, Brisbane Live to relocate and for the Athletes village to move from Hamilton to somewhere else too. That all lines up with the Brisbane Bold plan which now would be the frontrunner I would think.

Obv influential league people will try to push for number 2. But with number 1 they can then recoup any loss by bulldozing the Gabba and using the space to make $

I overheard a conversation not so long ago that the new Queensland Premier is looking into the Games. They don’t want spend money on a new Rowing or Whitewater Stadium. Rowing in Queensland is on a dam. Apparently similar to Paris and LA events will be held elsewhere so the Regatta Centre and Whitewater Stadium in Sydney could be used.

Option 2 doesn't solve the issue of the Gabba being woefully out of date and too small for its intended use.
 
The Olympic Review is done, and the main recommendation is to scrap the Gabba rebuild and instead build Victoria Park Olympic Stadium with a 55,000 seat capacity! These are the details from the Courier Mail:
  • Estimated to cost $3.4 Billion
  • The Gabba Rebuild cost had blown out itself to $3.4 Billion
  • The new proposals all fit inside the original $7 Billion Olympic Games Budget (no added money needed)
  • Brisbane Live Arena to move to the Roma St Parklands
  • Brisbane Live at Roma St had blown out to $4 Billion, will be cheaper in the parklands
  • Maintenance for the Gabba to continue meeting Building codes and being operational past 2032 would be $1 Billion
  • QSAC was considered, it would however cost $1.4 Billion with no legacy and you’d be spending $1 Billion just on maintenance on the Gabba under that plan .

Think this means that the Gabba becomes high density housing so they can get recuperate some of the $3.4b. Also doesn't displace AFL or cricket so they won't have to spend money on that.

All in all sounds like a win-win. New stadium in a central location, new housing at the Gabba site and cricket/AFL can stay at the Gabba until 2032.
