Strategy New recruiters

That's the issue though. Talls kept getting taken before us from 2008-current and the recruiters just waited for the next year and allowed it to happen all over again. The only time they reached was for Apeness and he's been injured ever since. They also get tabs onto the rookie list and give him an astonishing timeframe to prove himself while not adding any extras.

Alex Pearce looks like he will make it but the cupboard is bare now due to the previous 5 years of recruiting and the draft won't solve it for another 3 years till they are big enough. We have to use our first pick on a tall forward though, have to. It can be for a trade but we have to have someone decent up front to replace Pav.
I think if we got good recruiter you don't need high draft pick to get tall, Mitch went to Adelaide at pick 43

The game seems to be moving away from the influence big key position players used to have.
If there isnt any sure bets on KP"s take the best available mid you cant have too many of these guys and trade in a couple of forwards Macarthy, Stuart or similar.

Case and point. After Jeremey was a late developer and how desperate we were, we still couldn't go past the sliding midfielders after doing it for the previous draft too and nearly every selection for 10 years.

No you can't. This theory of trading in talls hasn't worked as no one has ever arrived that is decent without selling the farm. Midfielders don't look very good when the ball keeps rebounding over the heads out of our forwardline.

I know what you are saying but they need to be sure bets like Schace and Weitering or else you wait around 5 years for them to become average players if they arent available in the draft what can you do?

Pick the next available tall person, not every year but every second year to at least to fix your deficiencies. Otherwise you end up with an unbalanced list and drive off the cliff.

Our recruiters have talked about Key forwards statistically only come from low picks. Therefore, if we have a low pick they will statistically have more chance of making it, despite the recruiters rating a mid higher. They better pick one this draft or use it to secure a ready made target.

Yes it will be very interesting to see which way they go is getting very serious for these guys no room for error with this first pick.

KPP taken since 2010 (a time when we had Tarrant, Silvagni, Grover and Roberton on the list and playing games)-
2010 Jack Anthony PSD
2011 Zac Dawson PSD
2012 Tanner Smith 36ND (compromised)
2013 Michael Apeness 17ND, Alex Pearce 37ND, Michael Wood 16RD, Thomas Vandeleur 32RD.
2014 Sean Burley CatB
2015 Sam Collins 55ND, Uebergang 16RD

The failure of Silvagni to maintain fitness and Roberton's dick have contributed to the hole we have now. Both, at full fitness would be holding spots in the 22. We have regularly added 1-2 KPP players a draft in the last 6 years, which is about the rate of rejuvenation required. Some of them haven't worked out but that's the nature of KPP in general.

Sean burley?

People forget the lesson of the Bulldogs reaching for Jarrad Grant (pick 5) when they had only midfielders when they could have Patrick Dangerfield, or Alex Rance, Harry Taylor or Cale Hooker. I am not saying they made an illogical pick, but you have to value the probability of a successful draftee the value of the pick to a certain degree and live with it.

Very good point, if you think you have the next Patrick Dangerfield you just cant pass that up and you would once again try to fix your key position issues from your later picks. We all want a great key position forward to replace Pav but at the moment it seems that there may not be one that is worth the pick we are going to have.

All is doom then?

Roberton isn't really a KPP, we should have got something for him (well done Bond, another triumph) and he would be in our best 22 but he isn't a KPP
Wood was shorter and thinner than most of our midfielders wasn't he? All the rookies are speculative and shouldn't count, they're like putting your last $5 on the 0 in roulette before you hitch a ride home empty handed

if a player is out of contract and wants to go home you can't force them to sign another contract. we tried to get a trade for him but no one bit so he walked and Saints got him in the pre-season draft.
I think Clarke will go pre season also.

I believe McCarthy will definitely play better under the more open, fast flowing style of football we are seeing in 2016.

We delisted him and they got him as a FA

Kirsten might be a good addition too. Perhaps if we finish low enough we pick Kersten in the Preseason Draft.
