How could you argue that this is not 15% - 25% market share? In terms of revenue gererated it is probably more.

Show us how you work out those stats, because they are absolute garbage. Add up the total crowds or TV in Sydney or Brisbane, and it is not 30% and 15% respectively. Not even close.

I usually stay away from these threads because inevitably they all become the same trolling stuff amongst supporters of different codes.

What I want to say here though is that I was struck by Denmark AFL reasoning. When I was reading that post what came most strongly for me was the desire to 'conquer and destroy' in an area where AFL never had a strong tradition (in the recent past in any case).

Rugby League is the major sport there. But the Newcastle Jets also are very popular. These teams are not 'flavour of the month' type things.

Regarding soccer and I would venture that Newcastle is probably the only area in Australia where soccer has been the sport which is an integral part of the culture of the area, unlike the rest of Australia where it can be argued it was more seen as an import from migrant populations, especially after the post war migration in the 50's and 60's. This at least is what a Novacastrian friend of mine who now lives in Melbourne has told me.

Why is the fact that there is an area that is pratically Aussie Rules free such a disturbance to some fans of the indigenous code? Why we need to 'kill' RL and soccer in Newcastle? Why is the need that of all Australia has to play Aussie Rules as the major sport?

Australian Rules is already by far the most popular code in the country. I don't think it needs to create a bliztkrieg to conquer all. There are other areas such as Tasmania and the Northern Territory who are Aussie Rules mad that would be a much better proposition than Newcastle.

Sorry, but that's absolute rubbish. The Newcastle Jets are a very, very big deal up there. They're probably the best-entrenched of the A-League clubs.

The only AFL club 'Swans' at 392 k is getting almost three times the crowds of any one NRL club. Swans are getting the equivalent of almost 3 NRL club crowds per year. So the big picture is- 1 Swans = 3 NRL clubs

That is an amazing stat, and will only increase as the footy war escalates with a second AFL team in Sydney.
