Nick Suban - When?

Stats don't say it but I think that was his best game. The only player aside from Fyfe hunting ground balls in the first half, was crucially involved in creating goals that kept the side in it.

Wet weather requires simple football, and the fact Suban loves nothing better than to run hard at the ball, get it, and put it forward as he can made him the most effective player in the first.

Subans biggest strength is the wet, so wasn't surprised with his performance.

MTB also loves the wet, which favour the less skillful and more hard players.

There'll be people calling for his spot again next week, but I've always had a soft spot for the old Subanator. He's a great wet weather player, and he's all heart - won't forget how he and Barlow kept us in it at KP in 2013 until everyone else go to work. He helped to keep us in it this game for sure.

Still don't understand why he generally can't sustain his levels through 4 quarters, is it an endurance issue?

He is one of the hardest trainers during the pre season . Last one in for a drink and almost always the first out ready for the next drill so no its not a fitness issue for Nic
He does a lot of the heavy lifting in the mid field .
Nic isn't blessed with fantastic footy skills but he makes up for it by getting down and dirty.
RTB loves the guy because when the going get tough Nic is prepared to put his body on the line regardless of how dangerous it might be to his health or his body . He's prepared to raise the bar of commitment to the contest for the team .
Every team needs a Suban ,thank god he's ours .

He might be one of the hardest trainers but he can't be the best endurance player. Seems like he is only good in periods of the game, which suggests he doesnt recover well.

Has he ever had 25+ disposals? For a guy that never gets tagged and with our current midfield he should be able to rack it up easily like C.Pearce who does it at times.

Is he better than MTB is the real question? Other than meter gained he doesnt add anymore than MTB.

Better and longer kick than MDB, though. Used to have a better radar in front of goal than MDB, but he's been pretty poor at that this year, lucky hasn't been a what-if moment in any of our closer games.

can I ask who, or what is MTB - do we now have a mountain bike on our team ??
I am so confused, off to have more rum for clarity

Better then MTB? Yes. He can kick over a long distance and would back him to kick a major outside 50. Matt on the other hand has really limited kicking, struggles for distance- especially over 40 m+. It's pretty unfair to say with the midfield we have that X and X should get over 25 disposals. If fyfe averages around 35+ with Mundy 25+ along with Hill, D & C. Pearce and Neale then it's an even spread at best.

He plays as the defensive mid even if he isn't doing a hard tag so his job doesn't rely on getting 25+ disposals.

I gave him votes tonight. It wasn't his best game of the season by any stretch but it seemed like he was the only one having a crack all game.

Always has done, kicking was as bad as I've seen from him in ages though. Reverted back to his 'just kick it long without looking' strategy, did some nice things in close however.

Ballantyne? Fyfe? let's not get carried away.
Suban's game is underrated most weeks, but I thought he was bog ordinary tonight.
12 possessions at 58% efficiency, 2 tackles, and gave away 4 free kicks... there's having a crack and then there's having an impact.

Suban's value is questionable. It always has been.

It doesn't matter how well he's playing he'll always have his faithful army of apologists ready to defend him.

Calling his performance tonight "ordinary" is flattery. Somebody has to take the blame for the loss and he was certainly integral to the outcome.

I've noticed Suban always plays well when the team plays well. When the team doesn't play well he's a passenger. He had to stand up tonight and he didn't.

We have so many talented kids around. I'd rather play them and give them experience than persevere with a player whose ceiling is average and whose fluctuating form is a danger to our premiership chances.

You can tell the brains trust are basically in the same page as this thread - Suban isnt terrible, but isnt the answer going forward.

Hence why we drafted mids when the world bet the farm on us taking talls in Lever/Goddard etc. Best available my hat - they wouldnt have got Weller etx if they didnt think a need was near.

Its only a matter of time before his level is superseded, and Blakely takes his spot.
