Rugby League will never succeed in Vic, SA, Tas or WA. You want somethign to laugh at, have a look at the crowds the Storm get and remember the Reds? Haaaaahaaa
No one will watch NRL when there is a superior offering available and 9 totally know that. They know how to protect their investments by not showing live games on Fridays. That is why the sooner AFL is taken off 9 the better!

Here we go again, what were the crowds like for the Bears n Swans when they came in?

Give the storm some time.

Perth was going good until the 2 richest ********ers in the land wanted a piece of it.

You just don't get it, RL is popular on the east coast, is that too hard to get through?

Thats why its on Friday nights, not because you think 9 wants to stop AFL.

If its so superior, why hasn't it taken off anywhere else in the world?

Bzzzttt your actually wrong, the new stadium has been approved, and will be completed in the next few years, Storm and Victory will be playing there.

Sorry ElwoodRoo1 the new stadium is still being built at Olympic Park it is going to be a state of the art facility for soccer and rugby league with the Melbourne Storm and Melbourne Victory to play out of there once it is completed. It was originally only going to be built if Melbourne got the Super 14 franchise but the State government decided to go ahead with it anyway.

It is also part of the program that would see perhaps Melbourne Football club move to the Olympic Park area and have their training base there.

I am a Victorian living in QLD and so the words that alot of AFL supporters I used to think - but there will always be room for all football codes in this great country!!

Ok, aplogies to littleduck then. I was unaware that it was going ahead anyway.
It seems that the Victory fill it week in, week out but i think the storm will struggle. Which is a shame but AFL will alway rule in Melbourne!

Bzzztttt! wrong.....no new stadium coming! As far as i know, that was only happening if Victoria got the super 12 franchize.......you know, the real rugby. The 23 million and state of origin decider given to victoria is a strange one, and i am really lost for words there!
I must admit, on NRL GF sunday, i was all set to watch the game and see some good biffo but was completely let down. No ********, i started channel surfing after 10 minutes as i was bored senseless!!
There is no comparison between the 2 sports really!

No new Stadium

Quick you better go and tell the Storm and Victory that its been shelved.

23 million is going into Vic RL next year, you can believe it if you want, or you can stick you head in the sand.

What about the world class boutique stadium on the way?

Don't be fooled in thinking its being built for RL. RL will play there but it will be a minor tenant.

What about the $23,000,000 investment in Victoria over the next 3 years?

Its a lot of money. I don't know how much return the nRL will get back on that investment though.

It's quite simply really. Kerry Packer owns 9 on the East Coast. Rugby League is the premier winter brand of football on the East Coast. Simple.

And the rest of Australia can go and get f#@%$d, right? :p ;)

So how about we all stand on our own feet? Fair draw, fair match schedule, sell your own gate, catering contracts and broadcast deals. No cap, no draft. Eat what you kill and starve if you can't hunt? Isn't that the only way to eliminate all these horrible subsidies and forever end all arguments about who coat tails who?
But surely you don’t want a Premier League style premiership goes to the highest bidder completion.

Weevil, I am just making a point re subsidies/standing on your own feet etc. Having said that the EPL isn’t a valid comparison for numerous reasons. The main ones being private ownership, multiple divisions and international competition for players. The fundamentals are very different. The main issue being the massively greater relative difference in available resources in the short term. There isn’t anywhere near the same relative difference in the AFL between Collingwood and The Dogs as MUnited and Bolton.

2 major tenants -- storm and victory. neither would have got the stadium built on their own, but together they have!

i sort of agree... bcoz there is no FTA coverage upon which to measure ratings success.

basically yeah. KP doesnt give a stuff about adelaide or perth.

Two major tenants - Victory and the Rah-Rahs and unless the Storm can nearly double their attendance they'll be third in line. In no way has the RL been a major player in the building of this stadium. The Storm will certainly benefit from playing at a new stadium though.

Hahaha, going on about how much money the AFL is going to get, which stations will share with 9, sbs saying what everyone knows and not wanting the AFL, AFL still playing second fiddle to RL on 9, oh boohoo, why can't they put Friday night footy on in NSW and QLD?
Why is it we can't get on TV in Sydney and Brisbane on a Friday night at 8:30?

Why does SBS say these things about our great non national game?

Whaaaa whaaaa whaaa, Either way you look at it, if 9 get the AFL, you'll always be playing in SECOND PLACE to RUGBY LEAGUE.

And if 9 don't get the rights, thats even better, because they'll only have RUGBY LEAGUE and then they can start to shove it down your throats :D

Hey, you think SBS will take on RUGBY LEAGUE and broadcast the games into VIC, WA, SA since its got all the things that SBS are looking for?

Like State Games and internationals?

hahahahahaha. Yay for 9, you guys rock. :D

well seeing as no one actually wants to watch your game, and that it has only become tv entertainment, I wonder how long before we have CGI games, and you don't even need to get out there.

who'd know the difference?

If I accepted you ridiculous handout subsidy premise how would the last 4 years that 9 have had footy or the last 6 years that Eddie has been in charge of Collingwood amount to generations? Have you actually lost track of your own made up arguments? Are you so lost that you have to insult everyone that disagrees with you?

If you check this girls history, she's a 20 yr old chick with a hard on for eddie.

sick as that might sound :p

Don't like the socialism either.

And you are quite right about all the rigging of draws, catering contracts, subsidies and all the rest.
But the major problem is that unlike the free market of the real world people have the magnificent ability to either not progress through rigamortis and fear or send everyone into huge dept with optomism.
Either way everything collapses. We don't want that to happen with our footy clubs do we?

Footy has always had controls of some sort, whether it be zones for each club[that collapsed when some proved better than others],the coulter law,[with limits on payments to players]and others including various finals sytems.

The last thing we want is private ownership which an open market could attract. That would be a recipe for disaster.

Free enterprise is fine but sport has to have some controls even if some of the players don't seem to recognise that at the moment. So in that context we have two competing idealogies, socialism for the clubs and capitalism for the players.

It's a conundrum.

How can the AFL sell a package that guarantees the network gets smashed to its huge detriment in the biggest advertising market in the county let alone factoring the Qld market? .

What do think the existing deal is !

MarkT said:
If you write this into the TV contract you will effectively end the lives of a number of clubs and plummet the AFL into the financial wilderness.
.

They've already got more money than last time .
They're not going backwards you know .

MarkT said:
. What the heck makes you think ANYONE wants to lose money anywhere let alone the amount at stake in Sydney, let alone including Brisbane.

.

They're not losing money , at worst they're not making as much as they could .Nobody can afford any station getting the jump on cheap programming that may ramp up in the ratings .

MarkT said:
We are not just talking a suck and see arrangement here. We are talking about a 5 year contract. For all 7 or 10 know Sydney and Brisbane might not win a game for 5 years. As unlikely as that is, what does happen to the deal if they are not overly competitive. As it is Sydney don’t get a sniff in the draft this year until last drinks.
.

What if Sydney plays Brisbane in the GF ?
It goes both ways . That's what people have to weigh up .
Potentially the market could double !!! That's a lot of Moola .

MarkT said:

Actually the AFL are interested in a long term contract .
They have two other options .One is being actively pursued the other we wont hear about it to it happens .

Nine set to retain AFL TV rights
Friday, October 14, 2005

The Nine Network looks likely to retain the AFL TV Rights for the period 2007-2011 after media speculation suggested that the Seven Network is set to reject the AFL's initial $700 million offer.

"From what we are hearing, the Seven & Ten consortium is shocked by the AFL's first bid offer of upward of $700 million and are in no financial position to accept this bid, leaving the door open for Nine to enter negotiations, match the AFL's $700 million bid and win the rights practically uncontested. Even with Seven having the final bid rights, if they reject it on the first bid there is little or no chance they will match it on the last bid as which happened last time," Mark Thomas, Media Analyst from ABN Amro said today. "Seven and Ten have 14 days to find an extra $200 million basically."

Nine has all but sealed a deal with multicultural broadcaster SBS to fill the coverage holes in NSW & Queensland where Nine's NRL commitments will clash with AFL broadcasts.

Under the rumoured Nine, Foxtel and SBS deal. SBS will show the marquee Friday night football live into NSW & Queensland something that the Seven consortium could not guarantee.

Nine has also backed down on its initial proposal of a 4-4 split with pay-tv operator Foxtel reverting back to the current 5 games on free-to-air and 3 on pay-tv for Victorian viewers.

Seven have until October 26 to accept the AFL's $700 million first bid offer.
so... how does afl fit into the sbs charter?

the demise of the WARL and RL in general in WA .
They don't show NRL games or the NRL GF .
Everybody was so bored with the two team WARL this year that next year
is looking even worse .

RL had a great opportunity to grow the game in Western Australia with the Western Reds and now its all gone pear shaped just like you say. I dont think RL will ever expand to WA again bcoz the badwill from the demise of the Reds still lingers in the form of a declining grassroots amateur club football.

When the Union boys get some spine and finally put a team in Melbourne they WILL relegate the league to third place. Lets get this straight LD, RL will never be ahead of soccer or union in this city.

i called you a clown for saying rugby union will be a major tenant of the new stadium... and now youve made a rushed behind to escape the possibility of an embarassing goal... ;)

and good stuff promoting the state of rugby in melbourne.. but they only get to the starting gate once a year for a wallabies test match.. league gets to the starting gate 12 or 13 times per year, every year.

lol I do know that RU won't be playing at the stadium any time soon. I was only making the point that I think soccer and union will eventually be the major tenants when union thinks it can play with the big boys.

Rushed behind, own goal. Its wrong but I like it. :)

The super 14,15,16 whatever will do more.

go back and read what you wrote.. it was to the effect of "the major tenants will be soccer and union and they got the stadium built"

The super 14,15,16 whatever will do more.
it wont be expanding for the next 5 years at least. not during the life of the next broadcast rights deal.
