Was at the game last night on the ground floor, surrounded by plenty of blue and white supporters which was great.

I was also at the St Kilda match which was great, 71k people there to see that game..

..but last night, preliminary final, the furthest the doggies have gotten in a long time... and the crowd was only 70k?

I was very excited after last years game against Collingwood which drew, what, 85+k? Whilst I understand that Collingwood have a massive following, I would have thought the crowd at a prelim would be greater than that of the first final...

Thoughts?

Crowd Last night?

Am i the only one that doubts the crowd figure for last nights game as being correct. The upper level of most of the stands were empty so i dont know were they pull that 70k from seriously. Recount MCG and get the real figures right.. Joke!

level 1,2,3 were pretty much all full.

70k is what i thought watching it.

I seem to remember last years prelim crowd as 98,000.

Prelim crowds at the G have always pushed towards 90,000, so I was very surprised to see so many seats empty during last nights match! People have most definitely lost interest in this years competition.

Re: Crowd Last night?

How can you say that? 60k would mean 40k empty seats or roughly half full. Was easily over half full!
We guessed between 65k to 75k. Looked to be about 25k - 30k empty seats so i don't doubt 70k at all!

Re: Crowd Last night?

Definitely looked around 70k, pretty poor crowd though, even with the rain prior to the match it was disappointing.

The family ticket only cost as much as 2 adults so there are plenty of 'kids' tickets sold but not taken up

Its too bloody expensive ..... as much as i'd give my arm and a leg to see the saints in the big dance, i've already dropped over 300 bux in the first 3 weeks of finals (a couple of $12 dim sims included)

Was a lot of News articles about the Doggies fans not being able to afford the $90....which is fair enough for struggling families in this tough economic climate!

When will people realize that we are no Collingwood or Essendon. Where we are based and where a lot of our supporters live is not the richest side of town. $90 or whatever it was for a ticket, a lot of people in the western suburbs can't afford that, especially after forking that out to go to the 2 previous finals.

The way people carry on about crowds is pathetic. The AFL really couldn't care less about the crowd, and 70,000 is plentiful so far as they are concerned. All they really care about is who is sitting at home watching on TV. It's a TV game people, and even if only 50,000 were there, the AFL would be smiling.

Attendance money is only loose change to the AFL.

Yeah, the AFL needs to take a SEEEEERRRIOUS!!!! look at the ticket pricing. The preliminary final is generally to last chance for an average $$ fan to see their team play live for the year, and is, for a lot of people a once a decade opportunity.

It is RIDICULOUS that they are selling tickets at a price which prevents a full stadium. BLOODY RIDICULOUS!

70,000 @ $70 each is alot more than what the the TV rights are worth for that game. 70,000 @ $70 is also more than 90,000 @ $50 which is what the AFL truely cares about.

You seriously think the AFL haven't put any thought into ticket prices?

What planet have you been on? The AFL is absolutely paranoid about crowds. Do you think the AFL would have been relaxed and comfortable about 19K at Homebush a couple of weeks ago even if the TV audience was huge? I seriously doubt it. A poor crowd damages the game's brand.

The AFL, I reckon, will be privately disappointed with last night's crowd, but the fact that it just fell over 70K means that it will avoid a roast from the press. There were enormous gaps on the top tier and it simply didn't 'look' like a Prelim was being played.

Agreed.

It was more than $70 for most - I think the cheapest seats for an adult were $72. Decent seats were $102.

It is pretty embarassing for the AFL that a preliminary final can't sell out, especially with 2 Victorian teams. In fact, no final this year has sold out.

Could be way off the mark, but I just thought I'd throw this theory out there for debate:

Perhaps the slightly disapointing crowd last night could be put down to Geelong's absolute domination over the last two years. I reckon a few thousand neutrals wouldn't have bothered last night just expecting the game to be a lot more one-sided.

I know in Melbourne in particular, the crowds (and behaviour) at ODI cricket matches have dropped significantly over the last decade and I think that is partly due to the fact that Australia has been so bloody good at the game for so long.

I expect tonight's crowd to top 80k.
