Going to go against the grain here and say I'm pretty disappointed this was not overturned.

It was in the play, and if Bont did the same in a prelim and missed the grand final we'd be more than outraged.

Fair enough. I don’t see it like that, if he had have played the ball he wouldn’t have been suspended.

100% everyone here would complain no doubt if it was Bont in that situation but that’s really just bias. Every Carlton fan would be baying for blood if it was Ah Chee that bumped Cripps and not the other way round.

The AFL seems to have moved from just penalising those behaviours that are brutal and/or intentional to penalising behaviours that are dangerous whether intended to cause serious injury or not. This is mainly (but not exclusively) where there is a significant risk of concussion. In other words they are putting the onus on the player to curb actions and methods that could easily result in a head knock.

I’m fine with that, even if it’s mainly out of self-interest on the part of the AFL, motivated by their need to pacify the AFLPA and reduce the risk of being sued for CTE 20 years down the track.

I’m guessing Cripps was intending to be hard and unswerving at the contest but not intending to knock his opponent out. I’ve never considered him a dirty player. In any case he’ll now have time to reflect and next time he’ll go about it a different way. Others will have observed and will take note too. By such gradual steps is the game made safer.

It’s unfortunate for Cripps and for Carlton, but it’s been even more unfortunate for Ah Chee.

I fully expected Cripps to get off but was wrong - kudos to the AFL and tribunal (for once). I'm comfortable with that penalty, whether or not people think it's a footy act. We know it's dangerous, we have several players out for a number of weeks with concussion symptoms and there's now more evidence of the long-term effects.

I understand when people say they'd be disappointed/outraged if one of our key players copped the same ban at this time of the season (or even in finals), but if the AFL are consistent in punishing the act then it's ultimately the player's fault if they do it knowing the potential outcome. The problem is I'm unsure if the same punishment would be given if it happened deep into finals, but we'll see.

Ben McEvoy retires and will play his last game against us in R23.

I actually just checked for accuracy - we haven’t played them in front of a home crowd since round 21, 2017!

There was the empty stadium game in 2020.

So it’ll probably be a long while before we get another chance…

I'm so annoyed! I was so looking fwd to this and giving it to him....will have to vent on Ward.

I hate this argument. The test for whether something is appropriate shouldn't be "If your best player missed a Grand Final due to this happening, how pissed off would you be?" I'd be pissed off if Bont missed a Grand Final for gouging someone's eyes out, but I still think eye gouges should be a bannable offence.

The level of outrage experienced by fans is irrelevant when deciding on appropriate punishments for various acts.

I was just trying to get across that the view on our forum would be different if the shoe was on the other foot. Its not as simple as just being pissed off.

As mentioned I thought this was a football incident myself, and that he should get off.

How so? Are they taking it to a higher court?
They're appealing the result to an 'AFL appeals board'

This is the board that the AFL appealed to last year to increase Toby Greene's suspension for shoulder checking Matt Stevic.

I feel like they are just challenging to appease their supporters, nothing in the judgement or media reaction after has really given any momentum for a change in verdict.

Yeah, the standard for overturning it is pretty rigid legally - can't see it happening now. I was one who thought the tribunal and AFL would find a way to overturn it, but was wrong. If he was getting off it was at that stage, this one is going through the motions.
