In any case - Bellerive is a very nice stadium, good size and has a very nice feel about it.

Surely the AFL should just let them re- develop given the massive investment that has already gone into it.

Just building another soulless dome like Marvel is a backward step.

Yes agree, but that's too logical for the AFL.

Put money into Bellerive (and UTAS in Launie) to upgrade both. The state government could then develop Macquarie Point for general purpose use, including some social housing, and everyone wins.

But, it's the AFL. And a state govt. So they're both the only winners, which is their modus operandi...

Social housing. That’s a winning concept.

Disagree completely.

Bellerive Oval has an effective capacity of 18,000, but large chunks of that is just grassed areas where there's a limit to the prices of the tickets you sell. There's no corporate box/premium membership facilities, and that's other than the location of the ground itself, where its in deep suburbia, so difficult transport and local residents also a factor.

Keep in mind, that even with the ability to generate premium revenue from a brand new stadium with appropriate corporate boxes, premium seats etc., the Tassie Government is having to fund the team an additional $12 million a year.

Club revenue is largely through ticketing and memberships. If their Hobart home games in Bellerive they would realistically get only about $7 million in tickets and membership revenue. In a new stadium you can double that.

This isn't even getting into sponsorships, or the distinction between sponsorships and premium memberships (what is a player sponsor etc).

Tasmania will have about $50 million in expenses and therefore need that in revenue, or about $38 million of their "own" revenue. We're assuming given that they won't ever be able to sell more than 23,000 seats in a given game (untrue of most other teams that play in bigger capacity stadiums), there's a limit to their revenue generation.

Take $12 million off for the Tasmanian government funding and we're assuming about $26 million in tickets, membership, sponsorship, merchandise and ancillary revenue, which seems about correct to me.

The issue is that the Tasmanian government is funding 31.5%ish of the team (12/38). But if they were to play to play at Bellerive, we'd assume that they'd get about $9 million less a year in tickets/sponosrship/membership, which means that 21/38 of the non-AFL revenue would be from the government, which is just not acceptable to the Tas government.

This is just as an aside from the fact that we are assuming that the AFL would even be happy to have Tasmanian team out of Bellerive for player retention, optics, travelling fans etc, which we assume that they wouldn't.

I think the stadium effect benefits for building a stadium are a bit rubbery (the value to the economy of events and travelling fans is overestimated and we can't assume that there's going to be concerts etc. as much as they're claiming), but you simply cannot have a team's main stadium be so poor in its ability to generate revenue for a team compared to the rest. As facilities go it's even worse than GWS.

Macquarie Point is also the last place you want social housing. The Hobart Wharf is the heart of Hobart, prime real-estate with restaurants and businesses aimed at attracting the tourist dollar.

Over the summer, millions of dollars are spent by cruise ship passengers at the Hobart Wharf. Do you think cruise ship passengers will want to spend their hard earned money, and holiday’s to dock at the Hobart wharf….amongst Social housing???

It would be better to turn Bellerive into social housing once Macquarie Point is built.

100% agree mate, I do not understand people, who do not live in Tassie, telling us Tasmanian’s where we need to build a stadium. Why can't Tasmania have nice things?

We have no real big business/ manufacturing to keep our youth post schooling.
Tourism is our biggest drawcard, but we can't have any big tourism projects, owing to professional protestors. We have the highest unemployment (see professional protestors) and the highest medium average age in Aust.

We need to have a crack at building Macquarie Point, Tasmania deserves a AFL licence!!
Especially after getting passed over a licence for GWS and GC Suns....How did that investment go?????
Still draining 5-7 Mil each year out of the big clubs coffers.

After all these years, GWS and the GC would struggle to fill Bellerive, because no one gives a sh!t about those 2 teams as far as ticket paying bumbs-on-seats!
League in Western Sydney doesn't even fill their own stadiums . Why did the AFL think GWS would??
The Gold Coast, massive big population, but a super high transit population who work weekends.

If Macquarie Point gives us a chance of meeting that approx $50 million in expenses with revenue. This will prevent Tassie, being a drain on all the other AFL clubs hard earned $$ like the plastics /suns.

Sorry to express an OPINION on an online forum.

FYI I've been to Bellerive about a dozen times, and UTAS a half dozen, and extensively across all of Tasmania. If you're going to get defensive about other people expressing an opinion...

Its all good mate, my opinion differs from your opinion. This is what this forum is for, we can't all agree.
But if you make a statement that Tasmanian's shouldn't have a stadium, and we instead should develop social housing at Macquarie Point, then I humbly disagree.

As an example, would you respond if someone posted on this forum, that the people of footscray shouldn't have the western oval and it should be redeveloped to social housing?

This stadium and getting a AFL licence means a lot to tasmania.
Its why so many supporters signed up....120k memberships in tassie (that's almost 1 in 5 people) and 80k interstate, Albeit at only at $10.

Flying Ryan lacked reach and was getting his arse handed to him until the taller bloke lost a shoe. Flying’ Ryan then attacked….

Anyone else got the full fight?
Couldn’t fault that blue!
A real old school good clean man on man, some pretty solid boxing skills, and no weapons, kicking or dirty stuff. Wouldn’t be surprised if they shook hands and shared a beer together afterwards? (Like the good old days!)
Though frowned upon, hardly something that should be sanctioned by his club or the AFL

Anyone following Dan Does footy….he has a clip of Essendon training with Merrett taking a “hanger”

He says get excited Essendon…you might not make your 21st birthday

All the comments are “settle down Dan, they are playing against themselves”

You would think their supporters may have become more humble with this stretch but a l as it seems they have not. May the pain continue until long after I’m gone

A saying I once heard was, "Essendon supporters are like Collingwood supporters without the sense of humour."

Rings so true for me when I think of my Collingwood supporting mates and Essendon supporting ones. The Collingwood ones love a bit of banter and laugh off the ribbing, not so the Essendon ones.
