I think rebuilding is mostly down to the quality of decision making. Clubs that consistently make poor decisions like North Melbourne will do so even if they had more money and more picks.

For example, the decision to hire David Noble as head coach who had little to no coaching experience is an unforced error and it doesn't matter how many free agents they have access to if they make that sort of major decision

Also, the choice to ignore certain types of player at the draft (eg choosing Phillips over McDonald) has had major ramifications for the quality of their list. Giving them more picks to fix picks they stuffed up isn't the solution, it's making better choices with the resources they have.

David Noble didn’t need anything that Paul Roos could offer, can’t have been much wrong with him.

But weren’t North in appointing Noble just trying to replicate Brisbane’s success in appointing Fagan?

I think the jury is still out on the best approach. Young + hungry. Old + experienced.

This and your post on age are both very true.

A lot of NFL teams also find it hard to rebuild though, and that's with a less compromised draft than ours.

It's also possibly easier to draft in the NFL? You mentioned age, but also players often do one specialised task, so you can perhaps get a sense of their genuine potential with more certainty.
NFL also has a much larger pool of players available.

They were but it was still bad decision making

Chris Fagan had more than a decade of AFL level assistant coaching experience. He was head of coaching and development at Hawthorn just a few years before getting the Brisbane gig

Noble had no relevant coaching experience for 10 years prior to being appointed, and in the 20 years prior to being an AFL head coach had just seven years of AFL assistant coaching experience

Fagan and Noble were not alike

Do we know the circumstances of Cam McCarthy’s unfortunate passing?

Only asking given the issue of men’s mental health (if this is the case) doesn’t seem to get the prominence it deserves.

Understand that it is only 3 days since his death so it may be too early and raw.

Thought he was a crows supporter? Had a crows guernsey on at one stage.
Probably decided Kochie is more likely to attempt to play AFL games in a new territory like Bali.

Any ways, why the hell would a drug user decide to go to Bali for holiday knowing the ramifications of being caught with drugs.

Then there his new wife who claims she didn't even know he took drugs.

Yes.

Three simple changes I'd make
  1. Throw the ball up immediately for stoppages instead of waiting for rucks and other players to set up
Spot on.

I’ve been lazily timing boundary throw-ins as I reckon the effort and time required to throw it in 18metres counteracts its (18m) supposed anti congestion result. Takes on average somewhere between 6-10 seconds which allows players to get to the contest.
Throw it in quicker too.
