Watched around half of Melbourne vs Geelong tonight. Melbourne looking scary right now. They just put on pressure all day long, and as soon as they get the ball they back themselves to break tackles and run through players. They all stream forward together trusting that their teammate will either break through the tackle, or else dish it off forward. They're extremely fit as well.

Marinoff aside, we're not a brilliant tackling side. We'll need to either be pinpoint with the ball, or really stifle them through the middle in order to beat them.

Hore was amazing. Their defence was really good as well. Scheer was kept to 3 possessions, 2 FAs and goaless. Their midfield didn't have a standout either. Everyone shared the load. They made Geelong look like pretenders. Right now, the top 4 are the standouts, but Crows haven't played any decent teams yet.

I would say the Crows prefer the highly contested tackling game (especially against a side like Melbourne), or the short kick game. Crows have a few runners now with Kelly and Newman, but we need more run.

We're good at tackling in the contest, but not once players are running at pace. We almost always end up either missing the tackle or having it broken once it gets outside.

Fitness-wise, Melbourne and Crows seem to be a mile ahead of the other teams. That alone should be enough for both teams to beat most of the others. But whereas the Crows seem to rely on grinding their opponents away and reaping the rewards late in the game, Melbourne are blowing their opponents off the park with relentless offence.

that's because we lack pace in general and can't catch them.

You'd think all the inaugural teams should have a way better fittness than the rest due to more pre-seasons, but maybe Melbourne and Crows are the teams that have lost the least and kept most of their core together.

Wow. Port Adelaide are as bad as West Coast... watched the final 2 minutes. Port had the ball in the backlines and took their sweet time to move it forward even though there was about 30 seconds left. Instead of playing on at all costs, they just took marks and went back on their mark to take the kick.

Port should’ve won by 4 goals, Arnell shouldn’t last as coach much beyond this season, you give her a break for taking the reins of an expansion club and for last year but it is becoming very clear week after week this season she is far too inexperienced to be a senior coach at this level.

Doesn’t look like she has much control of the entire group especially game style wise & tactically; the defenders, midfielders and forwards aren’t even close to being on the same page yet.

I remember Kochie having a go at how good they were and how pathetic we were for having Clarke as a coach when he is an assistant coach of the men's.
It would be funny if sign up Chad Cornes for coach or something.

Nathan Burke going bang two weeks in a row in his post-match presser after their 0-5 start. Last week accused his forwards of letting them down by standing around "hailing a cab" instead of going for the ball. And this week he accused the entire side of "sub-par professionalism" including not eating properly, and of lacking grit.

Will be interesting to see if the team responds to repeated public ridiculing!

Nathan Burke has stolen a living from that football club playing his as they call it in Italian Soccer ‘Terrorism Ball’, sooner he’s gone from the AFLW the better.

Sounds like a terrible coach. Feel bad for the players.

That's appalling.

Doesn’t his daughter play for them?

Yeah but Port doesn’t sack coaches. Who are they going to get that would be better?

I know it was joked about before but wouldn’t be surprised if they eventually go full Kochie-hypocrite & look to copy the Crows model and go in-house and look at a Chad Cornes or even Matthew Lobbe, Chad has at least coached a team in his own right I suppose, wouldn’t even be surprised to see a succession plan with someone like Chad to takeover & eventually handover to Erin.

I know it’s very played out in AFLW circles the whole Men V Women coaching debate but I think it just comes down more to longer/right coaching experience being the more successful, I feel there’s been appointments on both sides of the fence that haven’t worked out, the Nick Dal Santo & Nathan Burke appointments with limited in Burke’s case or pretty much no experience coaching high level in Dal Santo case have shown to be a pretty underwhelming hires and then when the league first started the likes of Michelle Cowan and Peta Searle who had more coaching experience including with women’s teams when they were appointed and they didn’t have much success either.

Also comes down to the job of a AFLW coach not being a full-time wage but expectations of giving full-time hours and that’s why in-house, less-experienced or low profile coaches mostly all end up with the gig, look at what happened to Freo at the start of the year they ended up with a less experienced coach in Lisa Webb who had been part time helping out Freo while playing then had a year under Burke at the Bulldogs and was lured back to Freo after there ‘exhaustive’ process had not been able to find anyone else. That’s not to say inexperienced coaches don’t work out, Mick Stinear grew from a very inexperienced coach in 2017 who made plenty of errors in the early seasons at Melbourne to being a coach of a powerhouse team, but that’s a very rare case of a team sticking by someone.

Think there will be successful Women’s coaches in the not too distant future especially those who have undertaken long apprenticeships at high levels over recent years under modern coaching systems like Alicia Eva at GWS & someone like Natalie Wood at Essendon, Arnell with more years of experience like those under her belt would’ve been much better prepared and a much better coach then what’s she’s certainly currently showing at this level, she understandably jumped at the chance but still feel she’ll end up paying the price before she fully finds her feet at the level.

So I was looking at Western Bulldogs and how they've completely fallen into a hole, especially considering they won 2018 flag but are now the one outlier of non-competitive original sides who have won the flag

of the 21 who played in that game, 7 are still at the dogs, 7* are at new clubs, and 7 have retired/delisted (*plus add Katie Brennan who didn't play)

So only one third left, but it was a few years ago - But then as a comparison I thought i'd check the Crows 2017 side, and was pretty amazed to realise there are only 6 players left at Adelaide from that winning side - so it must be more than just players leaving

I don't have much of an insight but would have assumed, without really thinking about it, that we'd have more players remaining than that, but there you go

Would like to finally get Bella Smith home next season, Swans have finally moved her forward recently and she is killing Port today, another tough, tall contested marking forward would be nice to have in that Crows forward line.

Sidenote if Port lose this game against Sydney massive lols

Anyone follow this comp close enough to understand what Port have done wrong.

Did they recruit the wrong mix of players setting up their club?

They just lost to another of the new franchises. Last year Port beat them by 10 goal, today they lost by 15 points.

Their setup was all about Positive PR and they put that before even bringing in a coach with a résumé.

It'd be like Tasmania joining next year and announcing right now Jordan Roughead as their head coach - You tell me with a straight face that's a good idea.

They enjoy going the knuckle. Seem to be more intent on physically hurting the oppo than hurting them on the scoreboard.

Yeah massive lols, they might shuffle Arnell off for an early maternity leave and have someone on the coaching staff with ‘traditional Port values’ takeover like drummer boy Hartlett 🥁

Probably haven’t done much wrong, on paper I thought they looked like they would be around that 11-8 mark at the beginning of the season but now that looks ridiculous as other than some young defenders like Ballard & Borg standing up there’s holes all over the ground and I really overestimated how their other youth would progress, also other than Dowrick they don’t have any midfielders that stand up or have standout features to their game and she’s still only got a 3 quarter effort in her currently.

That’s probably the main problem with their list build they missed out on ripping Marinoff or Hatchard out of the Crows midfield so instead chose worker-bee like experience players to work around an aging Queen-Bee Erin Phillips in the middle and whilst someone like Maria Moloney stood up around the ball for them last year she’s totally dropped off a cliff, that coupled with another experienced player Kate Surman departing it’s pretty much left them bereft of anything in the middle of the ground. Arnell has really not tried any experimentation or much youth through that midfield.

All the Star SA juniors they took other than Sholtz this year in ruck are all flankers/outside players and their handling of a rising star winning player in Ewings is weird, she played more midfield in her first season last year than this year and her fitness is probably playing a part in those decisions. I don’t want to go into body-shaming areas but she has not entered this season in prime condition and it is leaving a hole for them in the midfield, we saw when Marinoff was younger & hadn’t put the work in the off-season she had similar issues.

Also pretty much only having 2 players who can occasionally kick straight severely hampers them, they have no real plans on field to get other players consistently involved in scoring. Lauren Young will help with that but they are really more desperate for an out and out high possession midfielder, also their depth beyond their first 15 is horrid, they’d be better off sacking half their list and replacing them with SANFLW players.
