The way Port are getting rid of Hinkley but letting him coach this season is bizarre. Basically writing off their own season before it begins. If he's not your guy just move him on immediately and start the new era.

I get it's the whole succession plan bullshit but yeah, either he's good enough to win them a flag this year and then why would you get rid of him? Or he ain't and why would you keep him.

I reckon they're having a bet each way or are hedging their bets. Either way its very wierd.

I think the succession plans would only work like a Roos/Goodwin situation where the initial coach is seeking that path. I’m otherwise not a fan. However I also think it depends on the outgoing coach. If internally they are saying they want to finish up then it makes sense. However I don’t think this is the case with Hinkley.

I feel like Collingwood's list other than some of their young guns, should be cooked. But i also feel like Geelong they'll defiantly keep themselves up around making finals and staying in contention longer than they should

Carlton have had an interesting run of injuries through preseason, looking at their injuries late last year they looked gassed heading towards finals.

Blues could easily finish top 2. No real holes in the list
Their midfield is a bit two dimensional and I don't think Voss is much of a coach.

We had the most one dimension midfield in the league and finished home and away top 4 3x. Who knows I'm just pissing in the wind a little with it but they seem about ready to make that jump that Richmond and we did after a few years of building

It's all been diminishing returns after 2021. I think what we did was a bit of a last gasp for that style of midfield and it's only going to get worse for teams that don't have more weapons at their disposal.

I'm not sure where they find that extra gear to go to against lists like Brisbane, GWS, Sydney and Freo.

How do you quantify it, what was the extra we had in 21 that we don't now. Sometimes you just get enough good players in AA form an it doesn't matter who the coach is imo. I think they have enough AA potential talent

Weitering, Curnow, Cripps, De Koning, Walsh, McKay. Then just a few blokes from underneath need to step up and have fringe AA seasons like Acres, Silvagni, Saad etc and they have enough.

I'm not saying they're a lock for top 4, just that it's not hard to see it clicking in the same way it is for us or Adelaide

I think in 21 most teams had not really adapted to the rule changes so it was more important just to beat your opponent in the contest. Now that teams are putting more work into how they use the ball it's not as important to win it at the coal face.

There's probably about ten teams who could have all their stars switch on and have career seasons so yeah Carlton is probably one of those teams but personally I'd say they're less likely than about 5 or 6 others to do so.

Blues defence is the worry for them. Pretty thin, especially if Weitering goes down. Beyond the individuals, they don't seem to have a good defensive structure either.

Midfield and forward line are exceptional.

Injuries. 2021 we had a great run with injuries for the most part.

Bored today so watching the WB V Ess match sim. According to Heppell who's doing special comments every essendon player has had a "Massive preseason"

Blues defence is terrible. Now got rid of Owies who was their best small forward in regards to goals. We've talked these guys up for years yet they continue to disappoint. Several interstate teams with much better lists that are less flaky. Just can't trust them.
