Non-footy related update here.

Have been away on holiday in NZ. Come back in time for preseason, get some check-ups done as I do each year and turns out I have three thumbnail-sized growths on my gallbladder. I have surgery on Thursday.

Haven't had a single symptom. If anything I feel better in health than I have in years, so it's still sinking in that this is even happening.

So probably won't be as active around here for a while as I get on top of this.
Sorry to hear that Dylan.

All the best with your upcoming treatment, hoping for the best possible outcomes for you.

Sorry to hear that and hope everything goes well with your recovery!

How did they pick it up? What type of checks were you doing?

Get well soon and take care :)

Thanks all for the well-wishes everyone, I appreciate it.

General check-up; bloods, ECG, abdominal ultrasound.

Have no knowledge of genetic history, so like to stay proactive in case I have some hereditary timebombs ticking. May have just found one.

Came up in the abdo ultrasound.

When get past this will probably do some DNA testing so I at least have a better idea of what risks to look out for in future.

If it is confirmed to be hereditary, I would also make sure to test your kids since they maybe at risk should it be hereditary.

Just been on the dockers site.
They still are infatuated with Harley and his latest insta photos.
I actually learned something. If Champion had not been drafted it would have been the first time since 1986 that a indigenous player had not been drafted.
Obviously the changes in the Nga rules are to encourage teams to draft indigenous players.

Obviously the changes in the Nga rules are to encourage teams to draft indigenous players.

Three things happened that have had an impact on the number of indigenous kids being drafted :

1) Post Jamara being taken by the Bulldogs at pick 1, the AFL changed the NGA rules so that bids before pick 40 couldn’t be matched (unless you were a northern teat suckler). It removed the incentive for clubs to invest in those programs particularly when ….

2) The soft cap on football department spending was slashed due to Covid and has yet to be restored to anywhere close to pre- Covid levels (Players and AFL house staff payments now dwarf pre- Covid levels, go figure). As a result clubs have had to prioritise what they spend their money so there’s less for academies and player welfare. Indigenous players often come from environments that are totally different to an AFL lifestyle so more often than not take more resources to look after - it’s what Simpson was warning of when he made his poorly worded, but correct, comment about recruiting private school kids. Less money = less resources = less kids from atypical pathways being drafted

3) Overall list sizes were reduced by two. Again due to Covid, and again not yet restored to precovid levels. Indigenous boys can require more development/patience and were often among the last players added to a list. So when you remove 36 players from the system, there’s fewer spots which likely impacts indigenous boys disproportionately

This isn’t a crack at indigenous players, it’s just that many of them come from a cultural background that makes it difficult to adjust. Look at Willie Rioli as an example- great natured kid who just loved playing footy but was naive and struggled with the discipline required to be an AFL player

It’s not all indigenous kids and it’s not to say players from other backgrounds don’t have issues (look at Clayton Oliver as just one example)

But if the AFL wants more indigenous lads being drafted they might start with looking at points 2 and 3. They’ve already changed point 1

Rik Mentha went in the rookie draft to Melbourne, but definitely few and far between this year.
Some talk Port were trying to get Cochrane added via NGA or will try with his highly rated younger brother before he gets drafted next year.

Gotta be a private school rich kent like Hamish Davis to make it these days.

Simmo was right.
The Sunday Age had an article today about the high number - relatively - of public school boys making it to the AFL.

I don’t know why anybody is surprised given they dominate law, politics, judiciary, business etc etc. Why not sport too?

It’s amazing that if you give people great facilities, support and networks, they succeed more than those without. Wow!

Do you mean private?
In the UK, it’s a bit different.
Public School = Elite fee paying school. Think Harrow, Eaton, Rugby, etc.
Private School = Fee paying school, like Hale.
Grammar School = Academic school, like Perth Modern.
State School = Government run non-fee paying school, for the rest of the oiks.

Looks like Grahame has a dirty secret…

Edited, for completeness.

Yep. ‘Public’ is sometimes used - incorrectly.

I made a mistake. 😩

My point was schools where fees are paid are - unsurprisingly - over represented at the top end of many fields including football.

The Age article reported comments from the ‘sports director’ of one school and the ‘football director’ of another. And ex-AFL players (like Matthew Lloyd) may coach their football team.
Most high schools just have a ‘PE teacher’.

The private schools actively recruit talented footballers into their programs and offer scholarships as part of that

So it’s not surprising so many AFL draftees come through that system

Another one our U15 academy guys took up a scholarship in Victoria, starting next season.

Vics offering scholarships to pretty much all our top academy kids now.

Nice work finding academy kids before they turn 15 then outsource their development to cashed up Victorian private schools (and the Coates League since they’re in Victoria) at no cost

Then get guaranteed access to them in the draft

Northern academies are a blight on the draft system

Its a joke.
Sam Marshall played for Sandringham in u16, played for Vic Metro un U16's. One year for the Lions academy in 2023 and then back to Sandy for this year and yet qualifies.
