Well that was an uninspiring game. Tigers fans are kidding themselves if they think the two mids in will re open the premiership window

It may well be correct that the window doesn't reopen but this could be running repairs to keep them competitive, even if not a genuine threat.

Father time may have caught up to Dusy. The game was set up for him a few times to take possession but he got caught or the opponents didnt bounce off. It's too early to write him off but not too early for contingency planning. Without him in the middle the cupboard is pretty bare (if no Hopper and Taranto).

I think it's as much the Geelong approach as anything. Try to stay competitive as possible as long as possible, because you might just get a chance to pinch one.

Carlton will be a good side, too. We may have just seen 5th v 6th come the end of the year.

I was actually pumped about seeing some footy again and then they dished up whatever the * that was……

Leave that kind of footy to us thanks

Trying to steal our moves….

Yeah got home in time to watch the 2nd half, saw the score was 30 to 20 or whatever, so watched an episode of Little Demon instead then caught the last 5 minutes, great game!...

I love what I have seen of 4 umpires so far.

They managed to pick up every technical indiscrection such as over the shoulder (point of the rule is not the touching of the shoulder), invented arm chopping decisions but managed to miss a lot of stuff that influenced the contest such a jujitsu moves being performed on McKay.

And anyone who wants to mention changing the rules to create extra time should go and bob for apples in the toilet first.

The same stupid shit comes to the fore every time we have a draw.

I loved when there was a mark and one umpire told the other umpire to blow his whistle because neither understood who was the controlling umpire

Also, TDK.

This is his sixth year so last night is going to start grating if he's not pulling down those marks (because despite the objective degree of difficulty involved in clearing those packs he does it easily and is spilling relatively straight forward marks).

I believe the contested marking will come and last night becomes 17 or 18 possessions, 5 or 6 contested marks as the outlet around the ground and 24 hit outs. That's a big game. I have no reason to think he won't get there.

Nankervis did beat him in the hit outs. TDK still gets a bit of grace because the hit outs tend to be an old man's game.

Is hopper really worth a 7 year deal though, it’s really got a hawthorn vibe to it. They’ve got too many older players who either get injured all the time or are over the hill, and the guys coming through aren’t that good. Geelong a different story, their older players still perform at a high level and are always playing. Look at Hawkins, somehow got up for round 1.

Can’t wait to see someone either massively overpay or make Carlton have to blow there cap.

It did always seem unnecessary to give Hopper 7 years, I wouldn't have thought there was enough competition for him that they had to go so far.

4 umpires is stupid because it'll happen at VFL/WAFL/SANFL level too which means:

1. 9 more state league umpires will move up a grade every week
2. With up to 18 state league games every week you'll see probably around 30 local umpires go into the state leagues every week.

All whilst all local footy comps are experiencing massive umpire shortages.

Aren’t more afl umpires doing 2 games this year as they now run significantly less?

I'm thinking of it in terms of the overall strategy.

It's more Geelong March 2019/2020 than 2022.

They may well get to 2023 with Cotchin gone and Martin a permanent forward (if he's not already).

If they believed Ross and Graham could fill the void they'd probably not have signed both GWS players

It's hard to assess a 7 year deal for guys who are in their 25th and 26th years in isolation. Both are solid AFL players who perform at least at the level of Prestia who is in his 31st year and who is contracted to 2024.

I doubt either is on cap busting money. I'd say the contracts are worth x million and that they took 7 years to spread it across that period.

Hopper may not last to year 7. That's not heinous.

They spent 2 first round picks for the security of 2 very solid midfield pros for a minimum of 5 to 6 years. That keeps them afloat in the next couple of years. I understand Sonsie is highly regarded. They probably turn to free agency next to reinforce the core for the time it will take to get back into the draft (which is 2024) and for those players to become seasoned (say 2026/2027).

Maybe they do us a favour and take Parish off our hands.

Kayne Turner named on-ball for Norf under Clarko? WTF? Boggles the mind.

Saad’s ability to get possession, take 2 steps and have a bounce, then take another 6 paces and take a bounce is second to none!! Maybe his coaches could tell him he can run 15m before he takes a bounce.
You forgot the bit about after the bouncing the balls within 6m, when he sprints with his head down and bombs the ball 50m without looking - straight to the opposition.

The bold choice was going with only one key defender. I know Corr sucks and Dawson is unproven but still, you'd think one would get a game
