I feel like if he did any significant damage to May he would have been suspended too. It's funny May was suspended and Melksham wasn't, unless the suspension was specifically for drinking while recovering from a concussion.
It was

If we're going for truth bombs I think we have been that way our whole history, aside from two or three periods where we fell into the thrall of a strong personality that was ahead of their time.
Not so sure about that, maybe post 60s I could agree, I don't know enough prior but we were fairly consistent in performance with a poor 4-5 years in the mid 30s.

In terms of existing in a (relatively level) playing field this century, we haven't figured out how to do anything other than cash grab from members.

Anyway I've derailed this into Essendon...

Let's look at dynasty teams against top 4 opponents over the stretch in H&A, because that doesn't pass the eye test:

Richmond 2017-20: 9-7. This is mostly due to their domination of the Cats after the 2017 QF. A positive record but not really a domination.
Hawthorne 2012-15: 12-7. This is more like a domination in reality.
Geelong 2007-11: 15-6. This is also a domination.

Maybe it was recency bias of Richmond tending to lose to challengers that I thought it wasn't really a domination. If Melbourne continue to be a dynastic side we can revisit in 2025/6 to see

It's closer than I thought.

Would be great to get a line by line look at the matches, when they were played and where.

I considered that, but then I really couldn't be ****ed doing it. Pretty sure the Hawks lost one to Freo at home.

the jungle drums say May , may have a facial fracture which the suspension is covering for

they also say Melksham has been on many benders during his time out of the team and May was trying to extricate him from a fight he'd gotten himself into - who knows, maybe the comment escalated from there

grain - salt

His face doesn't look particularly caved in in the apology video on the club's website..

Luke Hodge's perspective on this bust up with May.

Apparently May has done it before. He makes some interesting points about how that sort of stuff impacts other relationships at the club and can create a rift, and also what sort of things you can/should do in your club as a leader to safeguard it (like suspending a senior player for that, means it applies to everyone and not just the kids coming in).

In fairness though, if Shai Bolton kicks 32 instead of 0.5 there's absolutely no debate.

Apparently the optics weren’t sufficiently positive for HQ’s egos so now they’re sending in the micromanagers so they can make it into a big mess and carry the story into next week :rolleyesv1:

Melksham punched May in Greville St on Sunday night, after taking offence at May's attitude toward another player, Joel Smith.

During a dinner at Entrecote of at least six Melbourne players, one player directed what he intended to be a playful comment toward Smith relating to the injury Smith suffered in the finals last year, which ultimately opened up a position in the team which went on to win the premiership.

Melksham verbally intervened, suggesting everyone back off with the sledging. May didn't feel the need to do so, which created tension that built up to the point of Melksham hitting May outside the restaurant. Melksham, like Smith, was not part of the Demons' flag team.

I suppose they’ll suspend Melksham now (potentially concurrently with the surgery he has to have on his hand anyway). Intentional striking with high contact if it happened on the footy field is always a suspension, impact determines the number of weeks…
