Arguing we should aim to be Geelong would make an ounce of sense if we were remotely close to having a similar baseline.

They can afford to leave players in the 2s because they have AFL quality players in the 1s playing their roles and a quality development program for the VFL.

We have neither.

We need to establish a solid AFL team first, we should be aiming to be Melbourne or dare I say it even Carlton. Once that's established then turn your attention to making it an established juggernaut like Geelong.

Suggesting we should be trying to run before we've even learnt how to crawl is insanity.

It's a bit more nuanced than that. They aren't playing the kids for the sake of it and they aren't saying to them they won't get a look in until they've done two seasons of VFL; when they're playing at a suitable standard and a position is available they'll get selected.

In the meantime they're in one of the best development programs in the AFL.

Helps their VFL team isn't a basket case.

I would argue building the program and culture is crawling before you run. How can you develop the young players in a poor program. It is not about trying to be Geelong. It is about building the base like Roos did at Sydney. Like Melbourne did after repeated fails.

fun fact,

6 of Geelongs 10 first rounders were not drafted them. Add in the freebies they've fluked (Blicavs, Stewart and of course Hawkins who was rated top 5 - 10 for a third rounder) and its easy to see why they remain competitive

Just like Tom Atkins, the myriad of Irish players they have playing for them and other players from the state league or alternative pathways.

Geelong have one the best developmental departments in the entire league. If you have any talent, they are likely to maximise it as evidenced. That is a key reason Geelong continue to get players wanting to go there.
For example, Matty Scarlett told them this Stewart kid from local Geelong footy was too talented for country footy, and so they signed him to a VFL contract. Low and behold - 2 years in the cats VFL system and he is ready to be drafted.

If we continue to look at these sorts of pick ups from Geelong, Sydney and even Collingwood as flukes, then we continue to miss the trick - as evidence by how under resourced our VFL set up continues to be.
