I think WC can add enough talent this off season to be quite competitive from as early as next year.

Summary: + Tim English, +Will Brodie, + Paddy Dow, + 1st round pick, - Pick #1, - Andrew Gaff

I'm really interested to see how this all goes for WC. Rightly or wrongly, that mob is absolutely steadfast and confident that the people in charge know what's best, have a plan and * everyone else. There's a strong argument clubs dont do this enough. Keeping Simpson is absolutely the best thing to do because whoever comes in would inherit a s**t sandwich and have no chance of succeeding.

They dont need to care about finishing low on the ladder for several years because their membership will always have a waiting list and they have more cash that any football club would ever need so they just ride it out, collect very low draft picks and come out the other end with a complete list.
And they get no pressure from the media in WA

I think by the time they have young stars old enough to take the load they will have no veterans left and basically be a Carlton or Melbourne model of young high draft picks hoping it all works out.

Trev and Simmo aren't going to survive another 2 win season regardless of how much it might cost.

Keeping Simpson next year - notwithstanding that he would be very costly to unload - may set back their rebuild if he coaches for wins (6-8 with a few veterans around). If they commit to the rebuild a la Hawthorn they will likely win 2-4, i.e. fewer than Hawthorn this year because they have less young talent and no Sicily.

wouldnt it be more likely that a new coach would be forced to play for wins than Simpson? i see no benefit in them ditching him in the near future, not like a new coach will have them way more competitive

They need a coach who will commit to the full rebuild. Simpson isn't that coach. He and Nisbett hanging around will simply delay it. Not that I care, of course.

The issue is that Simmo can't sack any of the old guys. Apparently Shuey was offered another year contract ffs.

A refresh definitely shakes things up and Malthouse is the only coach who has gone through a complete rebuild and come out the other side in the AFL and that was 15 years ago, with a dagger in his back already.

Not sacking anybody is just delaying ripping the Band-Aid off. You can't pull it off slowly.

im not suggesting simpson sees through the entire rebuild to the other end, but how does plopping a new coach in at rock bottom help anyone? idk if simmo is in charge of the list management there either, but id probably get him to see out 2/3 years yet where they are still going to be a bottom 4 team, get in some new assistants and what not during that time before bringing in a new coach

any coach who comes in at minute isnt going to survive long enough for the rebuild, why bring in a coach now whos going to barely win 10 games over 3 seasons?

i dont see how simmo wont be committed to the rebuild tbh, may as well let him cop all the losses at this point and bring in a coach in a few years to begin the ascent

Yeah rightio.

Let's hear how this fantasy happens

WC trade pick #1 to WBD for Tim English and #13 or #16 - Dogs trade English to the big money deal now for Harley Reid instead of pick #15 next season as compensation.

WC trade pick #19 and #34 to Fremantle for Will Brodie and #21

WC trade pick #57 to Carlton for Paddy Dow

WC pick Tyler Brockman in the PSD.

End result is:
+ English, Dow, Brodie, Brockman
Going to the draft with: #13, #21, #38 and #53

So West Coast trade for English NOW...they give up pick one for English who they can get as a free agent next year for less, and miss out on Harley Reid, the generational midfielder?

Do you run this by the committee before you post them?

I think WC are trading for English regardless personally unless Dogs miss finals next year

No doubt, but they won't be paying pick one either way, and they need to replace Shuey with a competent midfielder.

The only way I can see them trading pick one is for two picks in the top 5, none of which can happen.
