It's all been said very in here so will only comment on the pleasant surprises.

Craven. Knew she had heart and grunt. But played her career best game showing skill and impact beyond what I'd have expected.

Smith. Pretty much same. She's a goer, a fighter. But her hands were the best I've seen them- vacuumed up ground balls, hit targets under pressure.

My partner looked out a photo she took of me at the end of the 1999 grand final and it was very similar to the one she took at the siren on Saturday night. I hadn’t realised until now that in both cases I was overcome with the joy of North winning and also the relief of coming back to win after losing the year before. Wild.

Comment from unknown on SEN, could have been presenter:
“Well, we all know North have been picking the eyes out of the comp for years”

Absolute disgrace. Players actually want to come because of our early commitment to women’s footy and what we have setup since.

Can you imagine when we bring home our next men’s cup.
Whoever the "special" comments girl who was calling the GF on SEN was absolutely filthy we were winning. Was calling us the Tasmania Kangaroos, refusing to use North Melbourne. You could hear the bitterness in her voice. Absolute disgrace

I've indoctrinated my (now 21yo) daughter into North love since birth and she's definitely embraced it, but it's through the women's team that it's really blossomed. Saturday night was just indescribably brilliant, after a nervous 6 hours in the car on the way down it was 6 hours of bliss on the way back (albeit weary).
Thank you to our AFLW team for giving me one of my greatest North experiences

We lost 4 games in 1914
The streak started with the final four games in 1914, including the flag, undefeated in 1915 and 1918 and won both flags (no games in 1916 or 1917), then undefeated in 1919 but bombed in finals. In total I think it was a 49 game winning streak including three premierships. Pretty impressive. Wouldn't be upset if our AFLW team produced something like that!

Danielle Laidley: Every North Melbourne and Brisbane Lions rated after AFLW grand final

North Melbourne capped off a historic unbeaten season by defeating Brisbane in the AFLW premiership decider.

Danielle Laidley rates every Roos and Lions player in her grand final player ratings.

North Melbourne

Jasmine Garner 10

Probably the best grand final performance in AFLW history. 35 disposals, 22 of those contested as well as 10 clearances and 459 metres gained. Incredible!

Ash Riddell 10

Went crazy after a quiet first term to finish with 30 touches, seven tackles and five clearances because of a sky-high work-rate.

Sarah Wright 9

Massive work-rate to defend then spread to run-and-carry the ball from defence. Had a game-high nine intercept possessions.

Alice O’Loughlin 9

Star forward made the most of her opportunities, kicking two important goals in the first term, finishing with three of her teams six majors.

Emma Kearney 9

The captain ruled the half-back line for her team with stunning ball use and decision-making.

Tess Craven 8

Her best game of the year on the biggest stage. She kicked the first goal and showed quality ball use on a wing.

Amy Smith 8

Probably her best game of the year too in a classic wing performance with 21 important touches.

Vikki Wall 8

Didn’t touch the ball in the first term but came to life to finish with two goals and five score involvements.

Mia King 8

Brutal in the midfield contest all game with six clearances and four tackles. A very good all-round performance.

Nicole Bresnehan 7

Provided great drive with run-and-carry from defence and had 11 penetrating kicks.

Tahlia Randall 7

Hit up well as a key forward to mark the ball and often brought it to ground for the small forwards.

Jasmine Ferguson 7

Matched up against Brisbane’s important forward Taylor Smith and didn’t give her an inch.

Jenna Bruton 7

Was busy as a small forward with 13 touches, four tackles and a game-high two goal assists.

Emma King 6

Was solid in the ruck, but rules the air around the ground, taking five big strong marks.

Erika O’Shea 6

Solid as always in defence, mopping up plenty of ground balls and laying six tackles.

Ruby Tripodi 6

Had seven of her eleven touches in the first quarter as a midfielder when the game was up for grabs.

Kim Rennie 6

Battled all game in the ruck with 21 hit-outs and took the honours around the ground, particularly when they went long down the line.

Libby Birch 6

Solid as a rock in defence and offered plenty of run and carry as the game wore on.

Taylah Gatt 6

Worked both ends of the field on a wing. Her six tackles were a feature.

Kate Shierlaw 5

Competed very well as a key forward, particularly up the ground as a pivotal target for North.

Bella Eddey 4

Not influential as a small forward with only five touches for the game.

Craven is only 20 years old. Real chance she is a long term leader of this team. Imagine her with 5 years of training and match experience.

Indeed.

She's a more complete player than I expected.

Look away now if you hate comparisons - Rory Sloane.

There was game he just did every facet of the game well against us once, a balance of courage, skill, workrate and marking well above his size.

Craven has become that type of player.

Hand up, I had her potential capped a bit lower mainly due to lack of class. Revised.

I think there are a lot of future leaders in our young brigade, Mia King, O'Loughlin and Gatt, perhaps even Tripodi who has taken a different route to make onto an AFLW list. All have qualities that can see them in a leadership group in the coming years. I didn't include Eddey because she is already in the leadership group, but I can see her being elevated to VC in the next couple of seasons.

In the right here and now we have the makings of a side that can contend for many years to come.

  • stay together
  • stay hungry
  • stay humble

Stuff the haters PR, they don't want us to be successful. Just wait until the men start winning too.

Great time to be alive :)

O'Loughlin's the one for me; she dead-set has a steely, don't mess with me glint in the eye
