The premiership team has a certain gravitas in the draft, players picked up knowing they're going to the real deal.

Bloody weird having that feeling again after almost 30 years.
You'd have to be pretty excited coming to a successful program with good coaches and experienced players.
You'll have every chance of success at making it as a player.

we have improved the list again overall

out: mcgrath, pullar, savriryan and burke (plus our injury replacement player kavanagh)
in: Hetherington, Sheerin, Mangan and Mahony

all bar Mahony should be ready to play and impact next year

Now a 6 month off season til preseason starts mid May

I really think we’re going to put up some huge scores next season.
That premiership will release any doubts this side has had
We're definitely capable of it.

We just need to not put our feet on the breaks when the game is beyond doubt.

You're right, reading this headline feels pretty great from the Ballarat Courier.

Premiers come calling for rising star Claire Mahony in AFLW Draft

Ferguson pick 51
Gatt pick 28
O’Loughlin pick 22
Smith pick 55
Wright pick 32
Mia King pick 49
Bresnehan pick 63

Some solid drafting there.
+ pick 26 in the supplementary draft for Tripodi.

Meanwhile the sook clubs are like:
"Garner for pick 86 is a reach"
and
"rather draft Mike Sheahan's daughter than Riddell"
haha

Gatt pick 28

Champion team beats a team of champions. Crock and Kearney know how to put together a system that is the best in the land.

I appreciate that there are people who think Darren Crocker is just keeping Emma Kearney's seat warm in the coaches' box but I wasn't aware that she is already calling the shots.

There would always be feedback between captain and coach as to what is working or not and what to instruct out on the ground. Looked like she was part of the coaches box when she was injured and Crock was on the boundary.
I don't think it'll be a forced transition, it might be more like Roos-Longmire if anything and Crock calls his time done.

Emma will more likely end up coaching Adelaide. Or Essendon. And we might need to get used to that because great players very rarely become great coaches at the same club.

That's true, it's a possibility and I did think about that element of awkwardness of coaching players you played with.
She appears to set high standards as captain, so I don't think respect would be an issue from the players.
The list might be a bit more of a blank canvas for the next coach who takes over with a few older heads, we'll see.

There was a lot of "hasn't played much footy until recently" in even some of the 1st round picks, some due to injury and some due to coming from other sports late. Don't get me wrong, they look really talented like Zippy Fish or Molly O'Hehir, but they will also be coming up against Tripodi or Gatt types who have got more years development on them.
The girls we draft won't be thrown into the fire straight away unless they are good enough and get to learn their craft off some very good players. It may even fast track those later picks quicker into very good players.
I mentioned during the telecast how something like 6 picks in a row had major injuries this year (ACLs etc).
That was in the top 12.

It's interesting the psychology of drafting in the AFLW compared to AFL. Clubs seem more willing to take a few punts, whereas when a team does it in the AFL it's considered shocking.

That poster is undoubtedly better than what I could create from scratch. But it gets the club colours badly wrong, and could do with a couple other changes imo... something like:

Yep it's obviously easy if you've got a Mon Conti type that you just know will be a gun, but after say the first couple it seemed very much either draft for positional need or take the highest upside if the players are close on talent.

Not bad. Personally, I would have loved to have seen the Kangaroo holding the cup aloft while standing over a wounded Lion that had been beaten into submission, but that is probably a little too provocative for an "official" poster. ;)

Can you draw?

Doesn't need to be a lion. Could just be Dakota Davidson.
