I think a lot of individuals didn’t play to their best last night. So I suppose kudos must go to the coaching staff and the team for having the right structures in place, and the fitness levels and determination to get the job done.

A few old issues raised their ugly heads.

1. Clean disposal under pressure.
Adelaide were far superior in this department. I’ve always thought this has been the difference between us and the better sides in the past. Hopefully it was just a one off, first final nerves, because we have made great strides in that department this year.

2. Emma King up forward.
Hate seeing her isolated in acres of space up forward. If the kick to her isn’t perfect, then it is an instant rebound. Since the inclusion of Shierlaw it doesn’t happen as much, but it happened too often last night. She is much better pushing forward from the ruck and taking some marks. I’d rather keep the 2 ruck girls fresh coming off the bench.

3. Sarah Wright.
I disagree with most posters here. Her first half was poor when the team was under the pump. The saving grace is she doesn’t play a key role anymore with the recruitment of Birch. Shannon is a better 3rd tall defender also. If Kearney comes back, Sarah is the one I would drop even though they play different roles.

Ferguson, Birch, Shannon, O’Shea & Kearney is my starting back 5.

I agree I’d rather wright dropped for kearney

But you know it will be shannon

Next year tho I’d expect Shannon to be ahead of wright

There is not enough acknowledgment of Adelaide and their first half.

They blocked our exits from stoppage incredibly well. They applied a heap of pressure around the ball and on a few occasions this lead to our structure breaking down.

Then Jammin stepped up in the third and lead from the middle. Reset the tone of our physicality and away we went.

It was a bloody good game and Adelaide ain’t no slouches, we are just the best team in it.

Two of the umpires, #6 and #26 seemed to be more than happy to ignore crow infringements and to penalised North players at will. The other, #38 seemed to do a far better job. He looked to be more even handed than any ump I've seen this year.

And how about the boundary ump late in Q2? His throw ins gained more crow metres than most of their kicks.
And McCarty/holmes was saying no attempt at those htb - they just pick up the ****en ball.

Yeah what was that boundary umpire doing and we heard crickets from the comms team

Yeah the pressure was at crazy level as we had practically zero time to look for someone.
Of the lesser lights Gatt was the only one to perform in that first half.

Start of third we started winning clearances and played the game in our forward half - this helped us set up our zones.

They were all over us. With some more polish and class they could have gone nuclear and put the game out of reach. I hate playing them, hopefully that's the last time this year... though I am worried about a vengeance-minded Brisbane too.

Hawthorn is an unknown quantity at this level - the rest of the top four are all bloody good. Teams 5-8 are nowhere near any of the new big three.

I can’t understand the people on here who are always on a relentless search to drop players in this incredibly even team. Aside from a couple of standouts, the majority of our team is a hard working, disciplined unit. Plenty of them have weaknesses but make up for it with their strengths. However, constantly on here we see words like “shocker”, “hopeless” and “has to be dropped”. It’s going to be a difficult job at the selection table. Whoever doesn’t make the cut will be very unlucky. Martin missed out this week and, probably, won’t make it back in despite a strong season. However, leaving her out and bringing in Shannon, may well have gotten us over the line last night.

Brisbane have the talent, but dont have the fire. Wouldnt be surprised if hawks pip them.

This notion among the commentators that Adelaide didn’t take their chances in the second quarter is complete dross, in my opinion. They didn’t get any chances because they were up against the strongest defence in the competition. If Erika hadn’t have had her brain fade in the last minute, it would have been a 0-0 quarter. However, North definitely missed chances in the last quarter to put us out of sight. The number of shots 13-6 is a truer reflection of the game. We more than doubled their shots. Defence is the most crucial aspect of practically all flag winning teams.

... a bit hard on Erika imo; she had no option on the outside so coming inboard seemed logical, but of course as soon as you lose speed with the pivot, the run down from behind is on

the rest of it, spot on

I blamed teammates more than her - the whole crowd was yelling that she was going to be run down.

Yes. My understanding is that wherever they throw the ball in from, they are supposed to aim it towards the centre circle where the game starts from. Watching from just beside the interchange benches in the last quarter, the boundary umpire was throwing the ball to some point roughly midway between the centre circle and the edge of the square in the Crows forward 50. It didn't make a huge difference but it did shift the ball closer to their attacking zone.

Marinoffs disposal was very bad and it probably help us in the second quarter as there wasn’t much hurt factor.
Ponter Was hardly sited and this probably came down to her injury.
One player with a big name that never seems to do anything against us is hachard.
Hatchard was almost invisible the entire game, I don't think I heard the commentators mention her until the last quarter. Adelaide's big four were a little disappointing last night and will expect to play better next time. Both teams will believe they played well in patches, but they can still improve a great deal over the coming weeks.

I've been pretty convinced since the first few rounds that the most likely Grand Finalists would be North Melbourne and Brisbane, with Adelaide the only real threat. I now think if Adelaide can apply the pressure they showed in the first half last night against Brisbane they should win. I was really impressed with their pressure and defensive structure in that second quarter, they just couldn't penetrate the Great Wall of Arden Street.

I'm hopeful, but far from confident, that the effort of the Crows in the first half, was their best shot at beating us this year.

It seemed to me that they went out there with the thought uppermost, that if we can dominate North, we will break them and go a long way towards winning the game. In my eyes they displayed far more intent than our girls did, which led to their first half dominance. But our backline stood up really well, to keep the margin to just 4 points at the end of the second quarter.

The reset at half time, led by some sublime work by Jas out of the centre in the early part of the third quarter, turned the tide. Jas just showed why she is a class or two above anyone else in the competition, in my opinion.

I sincerely hope we don't play them again if we get to the GF. I doubt if I will be able to tolerate another game of watching Matthew Clarke smugly swaggering around on the sidelines.

Clarke looked like he'd kicked his little toe on the bedpost for the last 5 minutes.

Well surely that would make it easier for them to work out where the centre circle is?

Speaking of boundary umpires, one of them called a mark as okay to one of our girls in the third quarter, when from where I and others were sitting was clearly out on the full. It was roughly halfway between the 50 metre arc, and the behind post at the Crows end and would have given them a very handy free to mount an attack at goal. Oh well, you can't help bad luck sometimes can you. :)

I don't want to be negative but I honestly don't get the Marinoff stuff, just saw she won the AFLCA - they presumably know what they're talking about but I just can't rate a player that couldn't hit the ground falling over.
